Why The Bears TE Might Actually See Some Targets (1 Viewer)

It's so simple that I can't believe I haven't put it together yet. On the one hand, you have Martz's history of ignoring TEs, and on the other, reports out of Bears camps that Olsen and Clark are seeing tons of targets. The debate rages on.

Then it hit me. Martz typically doesn't use TEs because he likes to run 3 and 4 WR sets. Well, with Iglesias missing all of camp thus far with an injury, the Bears might not have 4 WRs. Knox, Hester, and Aromoshadu could be the 3 set and they could add Rashied Davis or Bennet for the fourth, but any Bears fan can tell you Davis is about one of the most mediocre WRs in the NFL and Bennet has been a major disappointment.

Could it be possible that being out of coaching for a while and getting older has mellowed Martz a bit, where he's actually contemplating adjusting his game plan to fit the players he has? Why mine the depths of the worst WR corps in the league when you have two legit if not elite TEs? By running a two TE set, either with Mananamula in to block and one of Olsen or Clark to stretch the middle, or use both Clark and Olsen together, Mart would be giving Cutler far superior receiving options than trotting out Aromoshadu or Davis.

I'm very down on any Bears TE being a ff starter but I could see them being used effectively in the Bears passing game as far as real football goes.

I believe Earl Bennett is still on the team and playing well, so they do have 4-5 WRs to throw out there.

However the TE's have been getting lots of targets and TD in the red-zone.

define well. No I hear you, just trying to make some sense out of what we're seeing in camp. Hard to believe they would be practicing plays and packages in camp that they have no intention of using.

I wrote about this in a different thread but Olsen is undervalued this year. The idea that Martz doesn't use his tight end has more to do with the fact he has never had one with the skills of Olsen. He had Davis in '08 but he also had O'Sullivan and Hill at quarterback. Olsen will be Cutler's #1 target in the red zone. The Bears don't have a receiver over 6 feet and Olsen is 6'5". Great coaches adapt to their personnel and Martz doesn't have Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce. I expect him to have 8+ touchdowns.
