Why Tom Brady may be the best of the best (1 Viewer)

fantasizing

Watching this weekend's games just seems to reinforce the idea that Brady may indeed be the elite of the QB's of the modern era (last 5-10 seasons).

This guy absolutely gets it done in the playoffs, time and time again. Yesterday, absolutely destroying the opposition while Rodgers and Brees choke. Sure, Brees, Rodgers, and P. Manning have all won a superbowl, but with Brady it seems you get a guy you can rely on in the clutch, in the playoffs when it matters the most. Having won 3 superbowls in the last 10 years just re-inforces the argument. Sure you can make a case that Belicheck puts a solid team behind him, but even so, Brady just seems to get it done no matter what.

IMO, Brady is the best QB of the last 10 years, hands down.

Im sure many will disagree, but just my thoughts.

Brady is still great though...he's just no Peyton Manning. Brady plays on the Patriots. Manning IS the colts.

Are we giving him an asterisk then for winning all his super bowls when the team was stealing defensive signals?
Really? have the Patriots been found guilty of this? and if so, have their superbowl victories been stripped from them?
I dont believe it went to trial, but I think before yesterday, they were .500 or worse in the playoffs since that was discovered. And the tapes were burned by Goodell, so hard to take it to trial when all their cheating was erased.

You do realize that Brees and Rodgers each won a Super Bowl in the last two years, both having better postseasons than Brady has ever had, while Brady was playing like crap and losing in his first playoff game, right? That aside, I agree that Brady is the best quarterback of the last decade.

Brees won his first round game against an inferior opponent too.

Brady also has a huge advantage time frame wise, at least compared to Brees and Rodgers. So the decade is what, 2001, when Brady won his first Super Bowl and Rodgers was still in high school?!Not arguing with your point, just putting stuff out there.

This thread is a trainwreck already. There are many fundamental things that are a bit off.

GB and NO could also have destroyed DEN, so not sure what the point is in suggesting Brees and Rodgers choked.

The Colts had multiple Pro Bowl players on both sides of the ball in almost every season prior to this year, so I am not sure how Manning did it all by himself.

Early in his career, Brady was the only really noteworhty player on offense.

Adding up the total points scored and points allowed for both NE and IND over the years, there is hardly any difference between the two teams over the past decade. Brady had the better defense early on, but the Pats have had some pretty pourous defenses and yet kept winning (in the regular season).

Manning has played a huge majority of his games payed indoors while Brady has played an insane amount of games outdoors. It's much easier to put up big numbers in a dome than outdoors in the elements.

For a guy that "just gets it done," Brady hadn't had a playoff win in 5 seasons.

And to the letter of the law, the Pats cheated by taping the signals of their opponents. But it was never shown to have given them much of an advantage, and from what I remember they could have been doing something similar from elsewhere in the stadium, it was the way/placement of what they were doing that was deemed to be against the rules. Plenty of other former coaches have mentioned the whole Spygate episode was way overblown and many teams have donw things over the years that did not conform to the rules. The only true distinction is NE got caught.

The fact that the Pats have not had a defense remotely close to the ones that won titles seemingly gets forgotten while the Spygate stigma gets all the attention for why they haven't won a SB in recent years.

Of course there's a question; it's already been posited. Your answer is debatable. No one player is any football team. It just doesn't work that way. Etc., etc...

Clipped from Wikipedia: "After an investigation, the NFL fined Patriots head coach Bill Belichick $500,000 (the maximum allowed by the league) for his role in the incident, fined the Patriots $250,000, and docked the team their original first-round selection in the 2008 NFL Draft."; it would seem the NWE put a lot of value in this "spying" and so did the NFL.

I am aware they got fined and lost a draft pick. Since when did wikipedia represent the pusle of the NFL?

I wasn't trying to diminish what you said. I recall a few coaches, including Parcells (who has had a very cool relationship with belichick since the Jet's fiasco), who stuck up for Belichick. I was just showing how hard the NFL fined him and how serious they took it. Wikipedia entry didn't drive me to post this, just an easy place to get some info.

At the time, I said that had the same thing happened and the Bengals, Browns, or Lions were the ones that got got it would have been no more than a footnote in the sports section. So many teams have done things against the rules over the years that would fall in the "cheating" category (player tampering, trying to steal playbooks, abusing the salary cap, switching balls for kicks, not abiding by practice rules, not reporting injuries, renting hotels across from practice fields, etc.). But few people knew anout them and therefore few people screamed bloody murder about them either. What the Pats did was wrong and they got punished. But it was not the end all of infractions. Basically, people were calling for the death penalty for basically a speeding ticket.

The thing about Brady is you almost never walk away from a game thinking, "Wow, Brady really stunk today, he lost that game by himself!"

Looking at the game logs, the tast putrid game he had was Week 8 2006, 0 TDs 4 INTs vs the Colts.

Its personal. People don't like Belichick. People in the media especially don't like him. It frosts them that he is the best coach of this era. Think of Belichick (and therefore the Patriots) and an FBG that has been banned multiple times. The standards they are judged by are different here. Its the same for Belichick and the Patriots in the NFL.

I guess you missed the 2009 playoff game with the Ravens. I believe he had 3 INT and a fumble in the first half and a QB rating of 49 for the game.

Peyton is the better QB, there's no question.
Peyton had the ball in the 4th quarter with the game on the line down by 7 in Super Bowl 44. He throws a pick 6 to seal the loss. Now, we're comparing the best of the best between Peyton and Tom. So nitpicking is going to happen. So lemme tell you, Tom Brady never cost his team the game like that in the Super Bowl. I'll take Brady.

He's 1-3 in his last 4 postseason games.

I saw that game in the list and decided that, while it wasn't a good day for him, it wasn't putrid. He at least threw a couple TDs.

BAL was up 24-0 after the first quarter based mostly on Brady's poor play.

Brady is 15-5 in 20 playoff games. He's thrown 36 TDs to 17 INTs. Those numbers are second only to Joe Montana. Peyton Manning is 9-10 in the playoffs and has 29 TDs to 19 INTs.

Joe Montana has 45 career playoff TD passes. I don't know if he will ever be caught. Brady is close but he's already 34 years old and could be near the end of his career. Peyton clearly won't catch Montana.

First of all, with the exception of the 2007 the Colts have had better offensive players then the Pats, in the last 2 years they have completely changed their offense, Brady and Belichick have done more with less than anyone - ever.

Saying that the Pats have a better team is bull, especially whenever that point is refuted its immediately changed to "Herp Durr Patriots are a system".

Colts v Pats has been settled, Better QB, Better Coach, Better System.

I will say that Peyton is definitely more valuable to his team then Brady, but that in no way makes him better. I still believe Peyton is without a doubt the #2 all time (ahead of montana, behind brady)

No, I gathered that from you first response, what does superbowl losses have anything to do with how good they are? I was a niners fan growing up, I watched all the games, Ive seen what Montana could/did do. A little Jerry Rice goes a long way.

brady hasnt gotten in done in the playoffs for like 7 yrs. brady has massively underperformed all of those years. ironically, his playoff failures have coincided with amassing elite regular season numbers. he has essentially become manning. gaudy regular season stats buttressed with garbage padding followed by playoff disappointment. maybe it changes this year, or maybe its better to develop a game manager with an elite d. actually, looking at the past super bowl champs, both styles seem to work.

How much do you have to do to satisfy haters? Really, we get it, you dont like the guy or the team, they win all the time. Theyre better then your team, theyll be better then your team for a while longer and people will continue to hate them, when all is said and done Brady will still be the best. Rodgers has got a long road ahead of him.

Brady played with Moss for 2.5 seasons, the broke almost every relevant (to this discussion) record in one of those seasons, you know the one (the best season ever). Also, Jerry Rice is the best WR to ever play the game, maybe even the best player to ever play the game, so I dont know what point you are trying to make comparing the two, other than reinforcing my point that Brady has done more with less, than anyone - ever.

Oh jezus, stop with the hyperbole. Please don't sound like Brady has been a one man show; he, when he was winning Superbowls, had a dominate defensive team. I also seem to remember Cassel stepping into his offense and doing a good job; how did Manning's back-ups do this year? If you like Brady, great, but to say 2007 was the best season, when he lost the Superbowl, makes you sound like the sycophant that you are.

no u dont get anything. i like the pats a ton and think brady may indeed be the goat. but since he has started to put up elite numbers, his team has failed in the playoffs. its like, mebbe hes not this great winner that wills his team to victory on sheer personality and desire. mebbe there is more to football than one player. i dunno, i know if manning throws those picks vs the broncos in 05, or fails to close out a big lead vs the colts in 06, or puts up a mere 14 pts with the goat offense in 07, or gets shellacked by the ravens in 09, and the lol jets game ugh, well, i just know other qbs would be under a ton of heat. but brady gets a pass. and rather, he gets celebrated bc hey, look, elite regular season numbers.i just think its a double standard.

brady hasnt gotten in done in the playoffs for like 7 yrs. brady has massively underperformed all of those years. ironically, his playoff failures have coincided with amassing elite regular season numbers. he has essentially become manning. gaudy regular season stats buttressed with garbage padding followed by playoff disappointment. maybe it changes this year, or maybe its better to develop a game manager with an elite d. actually, looking at the past super bowl champs, both styles seem to work.
How much do you have to do to satisfy haters? Really, we get it, you dont like the guy or the team, they win all the time. Theyre better then your team, theyll be better then your team for a while longer and people will continue to hate them, when all is said and done Brady will still be the best. Rodgers has got a long road ahead of him.
no u dont get anything. i like the pats a ton and think brady may indeed be the goat. but since he has started to put up elite numbers, his team has failed in the playoffs. its like, mebbe hes not this great winner that wills his team to victory on sheer personality and desire. mebbe there is more to football than one player.
Im not implying that he wills their team to victory at all, I believe the 2011-12 Pats are better than the 2007 Pats, the team synergy is amazing. They arent the Saints/Colts throwing the ball 70 times a game, they arent the Packers throwing the ball 50+ yards every pass, or the Ravens dominating the ground game. They plan and practice, exploit and tear apart teams, at every level of the game.
i dunno, i know if manning throws those picks vs the broncos in 05, or fails to close out a big lead vs the colts in 06, or puts up a mere 14 pts with the goat offense in 07, or gets shellacked by the ravens in 09, and the lol jets game ugh, well, i just know other qbs would be under a ton of heat. but brady gets a pass. and rather, he gets celebrated bc hey, look, elite regular season numbers.i just think its a double standard.
Manning and Brady (and Brees and Rodgers) get a lot of passes, because they are classy guys. They also catch a lot of flak, a lot of which is complete bs, it is a double standard but it evens out in the end.

They play in the 2nd weakest division (arguably), in the by far weaker conference, and had a ridiculously easy schedule this year; I wouldn't bet the farm on them.

He's 1-3 in his last 4 postseason games.
Brady is 15-5 in 20 playoff games. He's thrown 36 TDs to 17 INTs. Those numbers are second only to Joe Montana. Peyton Manning is 9-10 in the playoffs and has 29 TDs to 19 INTs.
I never said he hasn't been a great QB in the playoffs in his career. I just found the bolded to be a funny thing to say considering Brady has been pretty bad in the playoffs recently.

The AFC is and has been the better conference since steve young retired. When the Pats, Colts, Ravens and Steelers dynasties end (the Steelers might have already) the NFC will of course retake the lead, ebbs and flows.

since spygate, tom brady has led his team to an 18-0 record, broken the td record, set the int record, and broken marinos yardage record, while leading his team to a nearly .800 win percentage, two league mvps, two afc chamionship games, and helping welker lead the league in receptions, moss set the td record, and gronkowski have the greatest season for a te in nfl history in just his second year in the league.

This looks somewhat similar to the other 10,000 Pats fans vs Pats haters threads. I suggest people start searching for them instead of posting here...

Wow, if this isn't a case of "what have you done for me lately!!"Brady's Patriots were upset in each of the last 2 playoff seasons, and if you were to compare those games to Brees' & Rodgers' games from this weekend, you'd see that Brady did "as bad" or worse. Yet because he beat a mediocre Broncos team, he "absolutely gets it done in the playoffs?"Okay

Oh, really? Brady had the ball (and all 3 timeouts) in the 4th quarter with the game on the line down by 3 in Super Bowl 42. He takes a sack and throws 3 incompletions to seal the loss. He needed 39 yards to get into field goal range to tie the game. So your statement is dead wrong. Brady couldn't complete a pass when the game was on the line. He cost his team just the same as Manning did.

Hilarious. I love the way some people overreact to one game. Based on the hype in the last three weeks, Tebow, for example, went from the worst QB in NFL to league MVP and back to the worst QB in the NFL.

The thing about Brady is you almost never walk away from a game thinking, "Wow, Brady really stunk today, he lost that game by himself!"Looking at the game logs, the tast putrid game he had was Week 8 2006, 0 TDs 4 INTs vs the Colts.
Sure, but if anyone walked away from the Saints or Packers game pinning it all on Rodgers or Brees, they obviously did not watch the games.

I have never seen a QB look as dominant as Tom Brady did in 2007. It's easy to forget how good he was because of the SB loss. It's even easier to forget that even after getting smashed all game long by NY, he still led his team down the field for the go ahead score when they needed it. If not for a once in a lifetime drive which included a dropped int and a miracle helmet catch by "whatshisname?".. even suggesting that Manning is >> Brady would be piss in your pants laughable.

Before yesterday, Brady had not had a QB rating above 89.0 in a playoff game in the last 7 or 8 outings...he's not Superman.
Ben Roethlisberger had a SB win where he had a QB rating off 22.6. Should he have to give his ring back for that?
