Wicked (1 Viewer)

I’ve seen the theater production twice. Really, really liked the story, but thought the songs weren’t very memorable. Sorta got turned off by the main actress for the movie when she got all in a huff because a fan modified the movie poster to mimic the musical poster. I’ll still probably catch it when it is streaming.

Seriously? The “wildest, most offensive thing“ you’ve seen? Get over yourself.
Erivo also gave a weird interview that went viral the other day where a reporter for Out magazine was saying something about the meaning of Defying Gravity to the LBGTQ+ community and Erivo emotionally reacted to that information being shared with her as if she wrote the song and it has not been around for 20 years. (I’ll put aside whatever finger-touching thing that Grande and Erivo do.)

Wow that is really dumb. Wish I hadn't seen that right before I go see the movie. Now all I'm going to think about is whether she's invisible/erased in any scene where her eyes aren't easily visible. :lmao: what a weird statement.

 Actually, I probably should have kept my mouth shut about the story as it bummed me out when I heard it, and I shouldn’t be bumming others out too!

After I read the article, I showed it to my daughter and she already knew about it. Apparently she's quite the kook and diva in real life. She also like to play the victim card as well.

Okay this was doubly stupid now that I've seen the movie (just got back). Because in the scene where she dramatically first dons the hat in the movie, they way over-exaggerate the shadow it casts on her face so it covers her eyes and all you can see is her nose and mouth....like the poster.

It’s just so dumb. In addition to covering her eyes, the fan also gave her a smirk so it was more like the musical poster. I guess that was erasing her too!

I can speak to why Erivo and Grande have been so awkward in the interviews. Even for me the behavior at first was really strange. Then I remembered back to the marketing around the musical when it came out. The two main actresses were not friends before the production and interviewers CONSTANTLY pitted Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth against one another. Wicked was one of the first musicals to launch having two female leads with no male leads. The media didn't know how to spin it other than make it a cat fight. Menzel and Chenoweth have discussed this many times over the years. They even played it up at Awards shows showing up with bandages on their foreheads and neck braces. Flash forward almost 20 years, it is not shocking to me Grande and Erivo have played they are best friends on this whole publicity tour to combat any of the rivalry drama Menzel and Chenoweth went through.

On Erivo being a pain... I'll just say in my Broadway circles, she is respected but not adored. She's difficult but man can she sing seems to be the general thought on her. In a world of Patti LuPones and Cynthia Erivo's (divas), we need to cherish our Bernadette Peters and Audra McDonald's (Both loved and adored)

They moved Grandes hand TOOO!@#!@# so dumb lol

Overall I thought it was good and was pleasantly surprised.

I did not realize they were splitting it into 2 parts and this was only part 1 (ending at intermission of the play). That will be interesting to see how they do part 2 because if I recall from the play the 2nd act is both much shorter and much weaker. I think all of the popular songs are in act 1 as well.

The lead actresses were both really good. Kind of annoying that they appear douchey in real life but it doesn't roll over into the film, they both did a great job. Ariana Grande was surprisingly good given that she's really just a singer, not an actor. She didn't just nail the singing parts, she was charismatic and nailed the wit/humor stuff as well. You wouldn't even know she's not really been in a movie before.

The original writer of the songs Stephen Schwartz (also the person in the movie who said "THE WIZARD WILL SEE YOU NOW!" during One Short Day) wrote three additional songs for Part II. Saying the second act is weaker, haha, is an opinion as all my favorite songs are in Act II. Haha. It is a darker and slower tone though.

The poster looked much better. Seems like a diva where she wants to stare blankly at the camera for some reason rather than the iconic poster where more of her face is covered.

Just weird.

Not an actress?!!@'

Are you unfamiliar with Sam and Cat?

Wife and I have had season tickets to the theater for a couple of years now. We caught 'Wicked' several months ago. It was well done.
If you still have your Playbill around, check and see if Celia Hottenstein was your Glinda. She is my friend who toured the last year as Glinda and just went back to the cast on Broadway.

Went on Broadway with our kids in 2022. She is listed as the understudy to Glinda and in the group of all the parts of Oz and Emerald City or students and whatnot.

Call it what you will, but the girl grew up acting before becoming a pop star.

Will I be disappointed in this because it turns the evil witch into a poor, misunderstood victim of a challenging childhood?

I asked my wife this. She has seen the musical a couple of times, and she said "yes" without hesitating.

So how do I need to approach this to make sure that doesn't happen? Alternate universe? Fan fiction? Any suggestions?

Really enjoyed it.

Grande was eh in the first half imo, not sure if she’s had Botox already or that’s just her, but almost zero facial expressions from her. She did grow on me in the second half, thought she nailed some of the humor bits.

A national treasure.

That would have to be the direction I would think. Because she’s great at hamming it up, particularly with her spot on impressions.

Saw it. The actors/voices were superb. Ariana Grande is a beast, and she was in "Disney Princess" vocal mode. I really hope this pushes her into a more serious artistic acting and singing direction. Her talent is being wasted with just a pop career imo.

The musical itself was...ok. I'm still not sure I get the point, and unfortunately the songs themselves are not hook-y enough imo.

The visuals were stunning and the soundtrack was excellent as well. I'll be seeing Part II for sure.

My 10 year old daughter was beyond excited to see it and even our 16yo and 13yo sons wanted to see it. We all enjoyed it, even my wife who usually hates movies. Obviously I’m a fan. Goldbloom was his usual self and perfect for the role

I don’t think they need a part 2, but it’s not surprising that they want to milk this cow.

Went to a Sunday matinee in a full theater w/ Mrs. Eephus & ditkaburgers. Enjoyed it but not as much as the women did. The art direction is beautiful and I liked how they worked familiar elements from the Oz universe into the movie. Stephen Schwartz's songs didn't do much for me, I can't remember many of the melodies a few hours later. I thought it worked OK as a standalone film even though some of the character story arcs were left hanging. Ariana Grande seemed too thin for me especially after a long weekend of overeating.

I have a family of theater-goers, so we were all excited to check it out. I knew going in it was a two-parter and shared that info prior, but it was funny to hear some of the audible gasps when the "To Be Continued" flashed at the end.
For me, Ariana was a bit nasally early but it seemed to get better throughout and I really enjoyed her performance. Erivo killed it, as expected, and it was cool to see that all the songs were recorded while shooting (according to some BTS stuff my wife found). The easter eggs were neat and we'll for sure be attending part 2 next November.
I did talk to a coworker about it as she's not seen the stage show or really heard much of the music and encouraged her to wait until both parts are out to watch it in its entirety.
