Wife got fired for "insubordination" ... because we took a vacation (1 Viewer)

How did they know you traveled? Did they ask?

Even in those times where we have a pandemic, is an employer allowed to ask an employee what they are doing with their time off they requested? When making the original request, couldn't your wife have just said that she is taking a week off and said she wasn't going anywhere?
She's a stickler for being truthful. In hindsight, probably would have been the right way to handle it.

I get it. It would be tough to lie about it as it sounds like she is already a blessing to the students even if they bite her, so she already is better than me with higher standards. I would have punched him in the face to get him off of me. More than once if needed. If she can make equal or more money in a less violent environment, count it up to time served helping those students and move on with a nicer environment to work in. She's paid her dues if that is what she was looking to do.

Glad she landed on her feet. Don't think the employer was wrong for what they did at all nor she any possible recourse outside the bite.

She should have just called in sick. (Maybe not the exact dates of the vacation request) But she'd still have that job. Unless she's one of those idiots that posts every waking second posting on FB/etc.. where they are, what they're doing. LOOK AT ME!

Can you also imagine how this would play out if they did nothing, and people found out?

Enraged school parent: "Why did you let one of your teachers travel abroad during all of this and let her show back up at school without quarantining? Are you incompetent?!?!?"

Superintendent: "But you see, we told her she can't go..."
Or, you know, why are the kids not already remote learning in a pandemic. It's not like the US is worse than pretty much the rest of the world for Covid or anything anyways.

If I were running the school, I would not ban my employees from travelling because of covid.  That said, if I did institute such a policy, or if people in a higher pay grade implemented such a policy and I had to enforce it, I would have reacted the same way your wife's boss did.  Sorry, but this really is the kind of thing that people get fired for routinely.

Edit: I'm happy for you and your wife that she's already landed another job.  And also I appreciate the work that she does -- there is no way I could work effectively with disadvantaged kids.  Glad the two of you ended up in a good spot.

My wife teaches and we went through something similar when we went on vacation late last year. She did the whole 'I have days to burn, so I'm going to use it' speech. Didn't tell anyone we were going to Florida,  it wasn't their business. My wife isn't one to blow up FB though, so she got away it.

Not any more

There was no "policy" regarding travel.

Otherwise we wouldn't have bothered booking the trip months in advance.

Guy just determined his own policy on the spot.

When the kids were remote, my wife's department and students (special ed) were the only ones that were NOT remote.

I guess it's fine to put her in harm's way, having all her kids coming into school, while the rest of the school was covid safe at home. .... But don't travel.

Today, the wife informed the school principal that Friday was her last day..

He was shocked. Said she was the best he's seen at what she does (truth)

... When she told him why she was fired his response was "who ratted you out?" ...lol

My wife has to start over somewhere else, the kids that she serviced will suffer, the teachers and assistants will suffer, ... and the rest of the kids in the classroom when the troubled ones act up and no one is there to correct it ... not because we took a vacation ... but because we took a vacation during covid. Regardless of the fact we were returning with negative test results.

While i am sorry that she lost her job-I cannot help but believe that it was deserved.  First of all--i don't think the superiors are unreasonable for the very reason that they approved this trip every other year.  What I do think is unreasonable is the notion that an employer that has employees that are working in-person and in-contact with special needs children should be signing off on unnecessary international travel during a pandemic.  A negative test a few days before getting on a plane does not mean that yoou can't or won't come down with Covid a week or two after landing.  You and your wife knew how close these kids can get to your wife through the fact that she got bitten by one of the kids.  It was a poor and selfish decision to go on the trip knowing that now kids are suffering, the other teachers and assistants are suffering---and all of this occurring in spite of the fact that she was never cleared to go anyway--and you guys still did.  If you put your employers in a situation to where they cannot trust you or your judgement--don't be surprised if your employer decides to move on to somebody they can trust.

Well that is why you aren't working in that position. When working in that job, it's kind of expected that will be verbally and physically assaulted somewhat regularly.

To be clear, she's not a teacher .. she's a behavioral therapist / special ed ... and not union.

She assists the teachers with students on IEP's ... collects data, develops plans and strategies for the teachers to use and the kids to follow.

She gets extra work done before taking the time off. No substitute needed.
Weird, our behavior specialists are unionized. They are just teachers with extra certifications.

These are kids with extreme behavior problems and disabilities. Learning remotely is virtually impossible. I think any district that really cared about those kids would make an effort to get them in F2F as quickly as was possible. Our center based programs all started F2F long before our general population. How is a cognitively impaired 10 year old for example going to learn online?

I did think about that after I posted. That's a great point.

Yeah it’s fair, not being in the Spec Ed world it’s not something people immediately think of. It sucks because of the extra health risk people have to take on but for some kids there’s simply no other way to make it work.

Man, I don't know about this.

Your wife should know the reasons why she has to be at work for those kids.  And you should know that too.  As @Ilov80s said above - those kids NEED that day to day interaction.

This whole past year has been such a challenge. What we were all used to has changed. What we all expected in the past has changed. The normal rhythms and flows of our lives are different now. It sucks the school didn't approve her vacation, but heck - there are a lot of things being decided on the fly now that weren't last year.

Sorry that happened to your wife, but the school was right on this one.
