I used to like to bring it up, but over the last couple of years I've learned to shut my trap.  How about you?

In the past it would have almost been a certainty that I'd discuss politics very cordially and respectfully with my father-in-law. Trump has really divided us though so, for the first time, I'm not sure but I'm guessing so at some point. I haven't decided whether to fuly engage.

No...Father in Law is hardcore GOP.  But also very ill...even with news on about the Impeachment last week while we were there, he said nothing.  I typically don't say much with him regarding politics because we don't see eye to eye on it and its not a productive conversation.  Everything bad is the fault of the liberals.

I do have a good talks with my brother in law (not his son).  A more traditional conservative.  Was a Rubio guy, wrote in Evan McMullen and is definitely not a fan of Trump.  Actually got him to look into Pete.  He has been disappointed with the direction of the GOP but still supports republicans on the whole...just not most Trump republicans.

I will be having Thanksgiving at a home where FoxNews is on TV 24 hours a day, including during Thanksgiving dinner.

So.....to answer the OP's question.......No.

I will absolutely be talking politics. I actually have a list of quotes that I will be busting out as my source material.

I can't wait to see the looks on their faces when I drop my hot takes and tell them my sources are timschuchet, Sann Foin, Henry Chevy, Razor Scooter, Plutarsky, Rambling Weck, Show Buff, etc. Don't worry guys I got your backs, that's why I changed the names a bit, to protect your privacy.

Then when things get really ugly I am going to play the victim card and then come back as an alias during seconds.

Happy T-day everybody!

I talk politics with my Republican in laws all the time and it's generally a very healthy conversation. Thanksgiving won't be any different.

That's a good question.

I'd answer with a question. It's one I use to decide whether I talk about any subject.

What's the upside?

What's the downside?

I then weigh those against each other and proceed accordingly. It's worked for me a long time.

I'm sure we will talk about how good the economy and market are doing but don't plan do get in the trenches on the negativity out there.

Thats so much better than I normally get on here...the new direction of the board is working Joe.

Happy Thanksgiving.

I can`t remember anyone ever talking politics at our holiday gatherings. We just like to eat, drink, play games and watch games. Too busy having fun to talk politics.

It will undoubtedly come up, but this group is mostly moderates that lean Dem and all but a couple pretty strongly against Trump and today's GOP. The exception is a socially liberal couple that may vote with their 401k, maybe not.

My dads at Xmas brings more variety. He and my sis are very left of center, and my dad is not always be most nuanced - nor a great fact checker. He's spread some pretty BS/debunked stuff, albeit well intended, on the Facebooks. My cousins are MAGA folk and they will likely get into it a bit as I slink to the other room for another whiskey.  That said, I could see my MAGA cuz and I having some discussion... and if he tries to bring up some ludicrous falsehood that we both know is BS, I'll call him on it bluntly, he'll likely have some comeback (though Im probably one of the more moderate/right leaning folks other than the MAGA crew), and no one will claim to be offended either way.  Then we will eat and do it maybe one more round.

Lol. It's funny that you say that. I actually had a different nickname in there that was just the first phrase that came to mind(Show Stuff) but considering our history I thought that somehow you might think I was taking a shot at you asking for links. I then really wanted to use Show Muff, which I think is of course funnier, but I wasn't trying to insinuate anything at all or insult and was just being goofy, so I changed it to something I figured couldn't be misinterpreted at all.

So yes, obviously Joe's pleas have not gone unheard.

Probably/Yes.  T-day is with my family and we're majority independent, now leaning Democrat.  Over the past 20 years there has been equal number of 3rd party votes to D or R.  It's safe to lable us a swing family.  :oldunsure:

Christmas with the in-laws has changed.  The Alt-R family has disowned anyone that doesn't agree with them.

Haha...show stuff would have been great.

No/No

We host and the number is 14-18 depending on everyone’s plans. The house will be 3 Rs the rest Ds but probably half Trump voters. We talk everything and anything but politics and religion.

No and no.

Will just be me, my wife and 4 yr old daughter this year (we just got an 8 week old puppy last week so no traveling).   Wife and I almost never talk about politics, she’s completely disenchanted with them, so unless my 4 yr old or puppy brings it up it won’t happen, happily.

Nope...I am the only republican in the family..Wife is mostly on my side but stays out of it.

So no point.   I can just come to this board and read the same things multiple times.   No need to bring it up on a family day.

I’m surrounded by conservatives in my family, and the few “on my side” are way too leftist for me.

So sure why not? It’s fun. They love me and I love them, all good.

Me, my familyand our spouses are mostly left to very left leaning but even then I don't like to engage in political talk when we get together.  Just too stressy and not worthwhile imo.  My mom is actually the opposite of the foxmews oldsters in that she has CNN on almost 24/7 from the time she gets up and can't wait to pounce as soon as you walk in the door asking did you read the latest! did you see the latest!?  I don't like it and she has a problem.

My family is almost completely moderate/liberal to liberal. Not much argument happening within the family about politics, so I don't expect lengthy conversation, but perhaps a few moments of expression of disgust with the current Administration and Republican leadership.

You are fortunate to have family who are able to disagree without being disagreeable.

I forget, I knew you aren't in the US but where are you?

And how did you wind up there?
Denmark, and born here. Lived in the US (Chicago) for awhile in the early 90'ies, after Hong Kong, before Brazil and Peru. I think I moved over 20 times in my life, you''d think I enjoy it but not really. The learning a new culture bit, that I enjoy

Thanks. Of all the places, may I ask why so much interest in the US?

Well, it was in my 20'ies I stayed there and I liked a lot of it. Over the years I've worked with a bunch of Americans pretty much everywhere I've been (even here in Denmark) so I kind of kept up and I got hooked on American Football - first at FantasyAsylum and then here.

US politics particularly has world wide implications, not least exemplified with the last 20 years of foreign policy. But it's not only the US I keep up with, I also have a keen eye on Brazil in particular (my kids were born there) - South America in general, and lately Hong Kong has resurfaced rather dramatically

Thanks. My daughter has been in Brazil for the last 3 months and loves it.

I lived there for ten+ years in both Sao Paulo and Rio, travelling all over the country. Must say I prefer Rio these days over Sao Paulo, but Brazilians are very warm and welcoming people in general. Not sure I worked with anyone there from abroad that didn't love it. Some of the wives didn't, but I think that has a lot to do with that it was hard for them to get meaningful jobs as spouses of the person with the work visa. Seen a lot of that in many places (also boyfriends/husbands where it was the woman that was expatriated).

Won't be back home....so no.  Just me and some buddies at my house eating, drinking, smoking some herb, and playing disc golf H-O-R-S-E in the backyard with a fire.

She was in Sao Paolo, Vittoria and in Rio till next week. Then to Maui then home for Christmas hopefully. She's just 18 and has been gone for 6 months. Missing her a ton.

My kids are the same age (17 and 19) - the oldest is on her (first) gap year - she's planning to spend some months in Japan next year, and probably South Korea. She'll probably go visit her grandmother in Sao Paulo as well and travel Brazil from there. She speaks Portuguese (my ex wife is Brazilian) so that'll help

(As a parent that will be tough, but she's technically an adult so she's free to go as she pleases)

As it turned out I’m easily the most right leaning person here as to who ended up showing up.

There were 8 families totalling 27 people at Thanksgiving meal we were at today. Everyone was related and several opposing beliefs. Not one word about politics. It was very enjoyable!

More than usual. The non-political types who usually dismiss all that stuff were pretty vocal today about their disgust over what the Ds and media are trying to do to Trump.

I know. I got the same. The non-political folks were totally baffled that the Dems haven’t already impeached and right leaning media continues to shill for the guy.

Eventually the conversation moved on to football, Black Friday sales, pumpkin pie.

I always think it's a bad idea to discuss politics at the Thanksgiving table, unless of course everyone is stuck in the same bubble.  If not, then for the sake of friendship and harmony, politics shouldn't be a topic of conversation during a time when everyone wants to feel good and be happy.

My Thanksgiving was almost entirely free of political talk, with one bizarre exception. My nephew mentioned that he wanted to buy some dress clothes at Black Friday, including some new ties. This led to the following exchange:

Brother-In-Law: (sarcastically) Make sure you don't buy any oversized red ties, or else you might trigger a bunch of sensitive liberals and they'll accuse you of sexual harassment!

Me: Ummm.........what?

Brother-In-Law: Oh, haven't you heard? That's the theory that the mainstream media has been pushing about Trump. They claim that his large tie is an arrow pointing to his penis. Women everywhere are outraged.

Me: Uh....I consume a fairly decent amount of mainstream media, and I've never heard that theory before. Where did you hear it?

Brother-In-Law: Facebook.

Me: Oh. Anyway, I always assumed that Trump wore large red ties because he has bad taste.

Brother-In-Law: Huh. Well, I guess that could be the reason too.
