Wilson sets news conference to thank Denver fansBy John Clayton

Denver Broncos linebacker Al Wilson scheduled a news conference Friday to announce he is being released by the Denver Broncos after eight seasons, sources said.

Wilson called a 4 p.m. ET meeting with the media in Denver to discuss his future, which will not include the Broncos, the team that made him a No. 1 draft choice in 1999 and allowed him to grow into the leadership role on playoff caliber defenses.

Wilson leaves the Broncos as a four-time Pro Bowl player and one of the top defenders in franchise history.

Last month, the Broncos tried to trade him to the New York Giants for a third-round choice. That trade didn't happen because he failed a physical. He had back problems last year along with a thumb injury. Wilson's rights returned to the Broncos, who were, at the time, seemingly willing to keep him on the roster.

With a $5.2 million salary and a $600,000 roster bonus, Wilson didn't fit into the Broncos salary cap after a busy offseason. His release will save the Broncos $1.63 million.

Wilson wanted to hold a press conference to thank the Broncos and the fans for their support through his NFL career.

Come on Giants! I know he didn't pass his physical when you were going to have to trade for him. But now you don't have to give up a player to get him I am sure he is healthy enough.

hmmm.... denver trades up to #10 to get Willis?
would not suprise me at all. This D depends on strong LB play. If Big Al wasn't gonna get it done, there is a HUGE vacancy, and there is a precidence for Shanny trading up to get the guy he wanted (DJ).

I think he is more hurt then is being reported. If Denver could have gotten anything in trade value for him, they would have, but if he can't pass a simple physical and might be limited in his ability to even play this year, why keep money tied up in him.

Don't get me wrong, I am a die hard Bronco fan and Wilson is one of the classiest there is. I would have loved to see him have a long career with us, but I think the writing is on the wall for him.

Lions were rumored to be in trade talks for him but backed off due to health reasons. I could see them trying to get him for cheap, but can't see him actually wanting to go to Detroit.

If he's not going to play why wouldnt he just retire as a Bronco ?

Wilson has had a doctor clear him to play this off-season, but the failed physical with the Giants killed whatever trade value he may have had. He should have multiple suitors.
