Winning Wasted Challenges (1 Viewer)

This from today's Redskins game has me thinking:

1ST & 10 WAS 39  1:27

A.Smith pass short middle to M.Floyd to WAS 41 for 2 yards (L.David). The Replay Official reviewed the pass completion ruling and the play was REVERSED. A.Smith pass incomplete short middle to M.Floyd.
Yay, Gruden won the challenge.  But why bother?  Is 2nd and 10 from their own 39 really so much better for your defense than 2nd and 8 from their own 41 that it's worth spending a challenge you might need later?

Seems like most coaches challenge anything and everything that is wrong without regard for game strategy.  Is using all your challenges rare enough that strategy doesn't matter here?

As long as you keep winning them you keep getting another one.
Did they change this?  Because it didn't used to be true...

You can get one back if you win the first two, but not more than three total.  At least that's how they originally set it up.

Hmmm I just looked and I'm not sure if it ever passed or not.  It was one of the proposed rule changes in the 2017 offseason to eliminate the 3 challenge limit but I can't find any info on whether it passed or not, which probably means it didn't.

Looks like this was within 2 minutes of the end of the first half, which means the NFL Replay Official challenged the play, not the team. Teams can't initiate a challenge with under 2 minutes to play in the half.
