Winslow officially has torn ACL - Done for year (1 Viewer)

Not sure if this is the "official" thread...but...He's Out

CLEVELAND (Ticker) - Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow was released from the Cleveland Clinic on Tuesday, nine days after suffering injuries to his right knee and shoulder as well as internal injuries in a motorcycle accident. Winslow was thrown from his motorcyle after hitting a curb on May 1. The Browns did not specify the injuries, although it has been reported that Winslow would miss the entire 2005 season. But Winslow indicated otherwise in a statement he released on Tuesday. "I am determined more than ever to get back on the field with my coaches and teammates as soon as possible," Winslow said in a statement. "I'm OK and excited to be going home. I would like to thank everyone in advance for respecting my privacy as I recover." The sixth overall pick in the 2004 draft, Winslow was limited to just two games in his rookie season after breaking his right leg in Week Two. He had two leg operations but was expected to be ready for training camp in July. Winslow signed a six-year, $40 million contract with the Browns but lost a $5.3 million bonus due to the leg injury. He had five receptions for 50 yards.

Have the Browns ever said he does in fact have a torn ACL?
No. Only "unnamed sources" have said that. The Browns are saying nothing about his injuries. I'ts hard to imagine him being released from the hospital without the Browns knowing the extent of the injuries, though.Mercury News article

MAYFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio - (KRT) - Romeo Crennel isn't a doctor, and he wasn't about to play one Monday night before a cluster of reporters inquiring about the future of injured Browns tight end Kellen Winslow.

In his first public comments since Winslow's May 1 motorcycle accident, the Browns' coach said physicians have given the team no timetable for the player's return.

Winslow remains in the Cleveland Clinic recovering from internal injuries and injuries to his right knee and shoulder. He hit a curb traveling 35 mph in a Westlake parking lot and was thrown from the cycle.

"The doctors haven't given us any prognosis about time frame or anything like that," Crennel said.

The Browns coach said he spoke with Winslow on Monday, but offered little detail about their conversation. Crennel said he was not upset with the 2004 first-round draft pick and that he only wished him a speedy recovery.

Media reports have speculated that Winslow could miss the entire season rehabilitating the inju ries. The organization has expressed concern about the swelling in the knee.

Winslow played just two games in 2004 before breaking his leg attempting to recover an on-side kick against the Dallas Cowboys.

"Any time you are in an accident your spirits are not great, but he is recovering," Crennel said. "The major concern should be how he recovers. Any time you get hurt in an accident like that your first concern is getting healthy and getting well." Crennel said doctors have not told the Browns when they expect to release Winslow.

He answered just a handful of questions before Browns media representatives whisked him to a social function prior to the annual Northeast Ohio chapter of the National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet.

It doesn't appear they know what's wrong with his knee yet.Link

The Browns have not identified the internal injuries or those to his right knee and shoulder. The club has expressed the most concern about swelling in the knee, which has camouflaged the extent of that injury. It was learned on Tuesday from a source with knowledge of the situation that Winslow has had at least one magnetic resonance imaging test on the knee and will have further procedures in seven to 10 days, when the swelling is expected to be reduced. It's possible the severity of the knee injury might only be known after an exploratory arthroscopic procedure is performed, said the source. After the full extent of ligament damage is discovered, Winslow may opt to have a second opinion before major surgery is performed.

I'm not sure if its been said in this thread but non work-related injuries never need to be made public in the NFL. Had Winslow been hurt in practice, it would have been required for any info to be relased immediately. With this injury, they can withhold information as long as they like. I'm not holding my breath waiting for official word.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like if a knee that is too swollen to even evaluate two weeks after the accident, that ain't good.

I'm ready to call him done and did so on my website. Apparently he's at least broken his femur and fibia... He's not going to be able to re-hab his already screwed up tibia and ankle... The team simply doesn't want to say the ACL is torn while there is any hope. At best it is "damaged" which would still keep him out for the begining of the season, and with all the other junk going on with the leg again... HE CAN'T REHAB. Not until the bones are healed. Simply put, just because there is an outside chance that the ACL isn't torn (which they apparently cant confirm without exploratory surgery which won't happen until the swelling goes down (read weeks)) doesn't mean that he has a shot to attend camp or even make the beginning of the season. Give him 8 weeks for the bones to knit (he has proven to be a slow healer) and we're already at training camp. Then he has to catch up on rehabing the strained ACL, badly healing ankle, bone breaks and lets not forget the possibly torn Labrum in his shoulder. We won't see Winslow until week 4 at the earliest. Maybe the team will PUP him instead of IR him. Side note: Heinrich could really be a sleeper at this point!

Worst thread title ever.
I usually don't agree with you JetMonkey but I am inclined to somewhat agree...people love to be the 1st to put things up even at the risk of being wrong much like the article that was linked.JetMonkey, please change that avatar...how bout monkey riding a jet. Browns | Winslow Undergoes MRI Published Tue May 17 8:23:00 p.m. CT 2005 (KFFL) The Associated Press reports Cleveland Browns TE Kellen Winslow Jr. underwent an MRI Tuesday, May 17 to determine how badly he injured his right knee while crashing his motorcycle on May 1. Team spokesperson Bill Bonsiewicz said the team was still awaiting results of the procedure.

I'm calling BS. It cannot possibly take over 24 hours to read an MRI. Someone, for some reason, is sitting on news.

Romeo Crennel has a FF draft tomorrow, and he doesn't want to give away any onfo until he has drafted.
