Wither thou, Gonzo? (1 Viewer)

So we all knew going into this season that Gonzo was no spring chicken. But still, he is one of the more talented players at his position, and the KC playbook relies heavily on him.

Historically, the guy has been almost at or over 50 yds/game, and normally targeted early and often. 2 receptions vs the Broncs? I know Denver game plans for him, but then 1 vs AZ? Seems his targets are way down.

It's still early, and Gonzo may regress back to the mean over the course of the season. But then again, maybe he won't. I admit to not seeing too many KC games, so can someone break down what's up with Tony G?

I thought with Green going out, Huard would depend on the great outlet that Gonzo provides. Maybe that hasn't been the case. Huard is looking comfy behind center now -- does he favor going downfield rather than dinks or dunks? Is Gonzo being used more for protection than off the line? Or has he lost a step?

Is Gonzo a good buy-low at this point? Are we looking at something that will correct itself when Green is back? Or is Gonzo a sell-high, with something even more endemic in the way KC is running the O affecting his stats?

Sharks insight appreciated, TIA.

Edited for speeling...

Gonzo is at the age where many other great TEs began to decline: Winslow I, Ozzie Newsome, Shannon Sharpe, etc.

As such, it is very possible that this is not a fluke. Also, o-line issues last year forced him to stay in and block more often...maybe that's still the case, not sure.

He should still be decent as far as TEs go, but I'm not enthusiastic.

I don't think you can at all expect the sort of production he posted a couple of years ago. That said; I do feel Green's return will help him a bit. Huard is starting to look good, but simply isn't targeting Gonzo. I don't know if this is primarily due to Huard's preferences and tendencies, or Herm Edwards' offensive scheme using Gonzo more in pass protection.

If you can get Gonzo cheap, I think he'll be solid for once Green returns (but not great). However, I think in most instances Gonzo's asking price will be inflated due to name value.

sorry for honda, but Wither thou? Don't you mean Where art thou? Malapropism or am I ignorant to the cliches of Shakespeare?

The biggest factor in Gonzo's production being down is the OL. The fact he has to run block more and pass block is what's killing his value.. If you remember last year when Roaf was out like 6 games Gonzo had almost no production... That's what is happening now.. He never should have been top 5 TE this year based on those facts.
