I was kind of surprised at the answer. Please don't post the answer until folks have had the chance to vote. I'll come back later and post the answer.

Give me some sort of parameters and then put the answer in some spoiler tags....

If foo is right and you are counting PR, then I need to know.

Off the top of my head:HitHit by pitchWalkErrorFielders Choice???
Dropped third strikeInterference: catcher/umpire/fan
 Also, what is called when a fielder gets in the way? Say a batter bunts a ball down the first base line, and the pitcher gets in the way of the hitter when going for the ball, and the hitter is awarded first base because of interference. I cannot remember exactly what that is called.

Are you including various methods of travel (i.e., tumble, skip, lateral shuffle left, lateral shuffle right, cartwheel, back handspring, front handsping, walking on your hands, crab walk, right leg only hop, left leg only hop, duckwalk etc.)?

So far we have:

1. Hit

2. Hit by pitch

3. Walk

4. Error

5. Fielders choice

6. Dropped third strike

7. Catcher interference

8. Umpire interference

9. Fan interference

10. Fielder obstruction (or is it runner obstruction? either way...)

11. Intentional walk (counted same as walk?)

I just looked up on hardball times. They have 23 ways!I think the typical question/answer is 9 though.Gotta love number 23.

game suspended with runner on first, that player is traded prior to the makeup;new player is allowed to take his place

base hitwalkhbpfielder's choiceerrorcatcher interferencefielder obstruction3 strike droppedthere's 8 i can think of, i know there's one more i'm not thinking of.
I like this list plus "intentional walk" for a total of 9Are we correct?
singledoubletriplehome runground rule doubleI got 13, I guess it depends on what they mean by reach first, you hit a home run, you still make it to first.

The most common answer to this question is 9 I believe.

Hit, walk, hit by pitch, catcher interference, fielder's choice, error, pinch runner, dropped 3rd strike, fielder obstruction.

I think a single, double, triple, HR, all fall under the umbrella of Hit.

I guess umpire interference should be added to that list though. So, make it 10.

to me, all of these are covered under base hit.
ground rule double too?

Here's the answer:

mytagid = Math.floor( Math.random() * 100 );document.write("

According to the list I have, there are 23 ways:

1. walk

2. intentional walk

3. hit by pitch

4. dropped 3rd strike

5. failure to deliver pitch in 20 seconds

6. catcher interference

7. fielder interference

8. spectator interference

9. fan obstruction

10. fair ball hits ump

11. fair ball hits runner

12. fielder obstructs runner

13. pinch-runner

14. fielder's choice

15. force out at another base

16. preceding runner put-out allows batter to reach first

17. sac bunt fails to advance runner

18. sacrifice fly dropped

19. runner called out on appeal

20. error

21. four illegal pitches

22. single

23. game suspended with runner on first, that player is traded prior to the makeup;

new player is allowed to take his place

I love the last one. Wonder how many times that has happened.*** SPOILER ALERT! Click this link to display the potential spoiler text in this box. ***");document.close();

Cool list, but whats the difference between "force out at another base" and "fielder's choice"?

Several of those fall under the same category -IBB is the same as BB. 4 illegal pitches is the same as BB, because an illegal pitch results in the batter being awarded a ball.

Dropped 3rd strike is technically an error (either on the pitcher in the case of a wild pitch, or catcher in the case of a passed ball).

I had no idea about the 20 second rule - but I assume that would be the awarding of a ball - but I am not sure.

Aren't fielder interference and fielder obstruction the same?

Aren't fan and spectator interference the same?

Force out at another base, preceding runner put out, failed sac bunt are all fielders choice.

Dropped sac fly is an error.

Runner called out on appeal is a good one, I assume yoiu mean he had an extra base hit and missed second? So technically he is awarded a single and thrown out at second?

This question was posed in Boy's Life (??? a boy scout magazine) some 35 years ago. In that scenario, the main character of the comic strip was up to bat with two outs (bases loaded???), he made the 3rd out to end the game (loser!!!), and then the question was raised. I'm sure all answers have been given in previous posts, but for this particular question, all the ones which still resulted in an out (fielder's choice, etc) don't count. As this was a kid's game, game suspended/player traded doesn't count either. Nor does pinch runner.

I believe the answer was seven, but I can't recall the exact list: Hit, Walk, Error, HBP, Interference, Dropped 3rd Strike, ??
