Also, what is called when a fielder gets in the way? Say a batter bunts a ball down the first base line, and the pitcher gets in the way of the hitter when going for the ball, and the hitter is awarded first base because of interference. I cannot remember exactly what that is called.

The most common answer to this question is 9 I believe.

Hit, walk, hit by pitch, catcher interference, fielder's choice, error, pinch runner, dropped 3rd strike, fielder obstruction.

I think a single, double, triple, HR, all fall under the umbrella of Hit.

I guess umpire interference should be added to that list though. So, make it 10.

Several of those fall under the same category -IBB is the same as BB. 4 illegal pitches is the same as BB, because an illegal pitch results in the batter being awarded a ball.

Dropped 3rd strike is technically an error (either on the pitcher in the case of a wild pitch, or catcher in the case of a passed ball).

I had no idea about the 20 second rule - but I assume that would be the awarding of a ball - but I am not sure.

Force out at another base, preceding runner put out, failed sac bunt are all fielders choice.

Dropped sac fly is an error.

Runner called out on appeal is a good one, I assume yoiu mean he had an extra base hit and missed second? So technically he is awarded a single and thrown out at second?

This question was posed in Boy's Life (??? a boy scout magazine) some 35 years ago. In that scenario, the main character of the comic strip was up to bat with two outs (bases loaded???), he made the 3rd out to end the game (loser!!!), and then the question was raised. I'm sure all answers have been given in previous posts, but for this particular question, all the ones which still resulted in an out (fielder's choice, etc) don't count. As this was a kid's game, game suspended/player traded doesn't count either. Nor does pinch runner.

I believe the answer was seven, but I can't recall the exact list: Hit, Walk, Error, HBP, Interference, Dropped 3rd Strike, ??
