You should have it on hard mode. It would have forced you to be patient.

I got the first 3 letters off the bat on hard mode.  Came up with 5 other words using new letters and never solved today's.

I do a self imposed hard mode. But I don't like sitting there for a long time trying to come up with a word, so if I can't think of a possible word I just use filler words to finish it up and see what the word is. If I had actually used hard mode, I simply would have stopped at three guesses and never known what the actual word is.
