We use slack but I had to turn off notifications...

Too many people treat it like a gosh darn  text thread almost Facebook like.... I don't give a #### about your kids woke you up at 4:30
You can set it to only alert you if someone sends you a direct message or "@" messages you in a thread. That's my preferred level of notification.

Yep that's what I really did.  My pig pet peeve is we have Skype when logged into our Network...

We created slack as a just in case since we don't normally work from home... But people will post something like bob can you email me X instead of using the freaking IMs

Me and another guy place o/u bets on useless posts

Zoom has been the real here in this whole WFH experience. They obviously ramped up their ability to handle exponential increased in traffic over the past couple of weeks.

We have had close to 100 people on Zoom at once (audio and video) and it hasn't been a problem at all. It's a bit of a cluster#### to have that many people in a weird Brady Bunch like display, but it's working. It's fun to see how adventurous people have been with their backgrounds, costumes and themes.

Zoom experts, maybe you can help me.  I am trying to record portions of meetings to make available later.  When the recording is stopped a little pop up message tells me it will be converted to an mp4 file when the meeting is ended.  When the meeting is ended, a display window comes up that shows the recording being converted.  When I go to the file location to try and open/view the recordings I see files that do not seem to have any type associated with them.  I can not open anything.  I can not right click to look at properties.  Nothing.  I just end up with "Not Responding" with anything I try to do with the files.   Any insight???

ETA...I can actually mouse over them to see types... There are 3 files that show up.  One is title audio_only (m4A); One is title playback (m3U); and the third file is title zoom_0 (MP4).

I'm on week 2 or so now. Company of 200k+ employees. All VPN'ing in from home. Loving it so far. I'm using a 32" TV or my second monitor while sitting on the couch in my basement.

I'm in the minority.  I miss going into the office.    It used to break my day up nicely.   I had a couple of hours in the morning at home to goof around, then another 8 at the office with a lunch break to break that in half, and then the rest of the night at home.   Now its just non-stop at home.  I had to look up what day it was today.

Those are standard windows file formats for video and audio. You can open them in any app that plays those formats, but the default on a windows machine is usually windows media player.

I'm guessing you're doing this from an apple/android/linux device in which case the files can either be sent to a windows device by email, usb, or over the network, or you can download an app from the app store.

You can also go to the zoom app, click on meetings and choose recordings.

If all else fails you can try zoom support.  https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/201362753-Local-Recording-Fails-To-Convert?mobile_site=true

It's amazing really.  We've been using them for 2 years and i can only remember 1 or 2 times where they had a technical glitch. I'm sure their traffic and volume has just been surging the past two weeks and they haven't missed a beat.

Depending on your plan...i usually record to the cloud instead of having the file local on my machine.

I am working on a laptop running Windows 10 Home.  I can view recordings from the web based site, but I can't do anything with the files on my local PC.  I guess it is a PC/Windows issue more so than a zoom issue.  I ultimately want to be able to share these recorded files with others, which I do not see a way to do through the web based dashboard.

I found a bit of a workaround.  I was able to upload a couple test files to a YouTube channel.  Still can't do anything on my local PC though without just getting a "Not Responding" result

You probably have some crap app associated with those file extensions and it won't play them.  Right click open with Windows media player should work (or go to the windows media player app and file > open the files from there). Or download something.

I can't right click on the files themselves.   I can open my VLC Media Player and open the files from within the media player, but I can't do anything with the files themselves including right click without getting "Not Responding"

First full week of almost the entire company working from home.  It is exhausting.  Now almost every conversation needs to be a meeting or a series of 10 emails.  You have everyone sitting at home all day firing off emails left and right.  I can't keep up.

Last job I worked from home occasionally and it was a nice change of pace.  When you have everyone doing it, it sucks.
My meeting invites level has gone about about 150%, and this coming from someone that routinely has 4 hours of meetings daily at a minimum. I have essentially been forced to become more selective on what meetings I accept, and have begun to decline on a regular basis. The majority of them can be easily handled via email or a quick IM via Skype. I am simply amazed how many people just instinctively send a meeting invite whenever a thought crosses their mind. Considering I have been a full time WFH employee for over three years now, it isn't like we were constantly meeting face to face before. If it could be handled via IM before, why do they think it suddenly requires a 30 minute meeting simply because they are working from home now too? And don't get me started on those that try and schedule them long after my work hours are over. Yea, I am "available" on the schedule then... because I'm not going to be at work. DECLINE.

I love not having the morning commute - associated with getting up/ready, getting kids up/ready, then to school then racing the best I can to barely slide into my first meeting of the day in time.

But holy ####### #### do I miss the drive home - associated with just a little bit of gosh darn peace and ####### quiet for my ####### self.

sigh.

This was the first week both Mrs. O and I are both working from home. I’ve been displaced from my office since Mrs. O needs our computer and her work laptop to do what she needs to do.
I have tried working from different places around the house and so far the best place is my family room on the couch with my giant laptop on the coffee table. Second place is at the table on my covered lanai, but it’s hot af in Tampa so that’s limited to a couple of morning hours each day.

I agree.  I hate it.  I want my home life to be at home and my work to be at work.

Maybe it would be better if I didnt also have to home school my kid while working but man this is going to be a long couple months

Im constantly working in general, but I COMPLETELY relate to the second paragraph here.

That's an entirely additional dimension I don't even have to deal with.  I pray for you.

My big issue is this is not a true wfh.   We are currently working at a reduced capacity so I don't have a normal work load like I would normally have

My big issue as someone who is still going in and going nuts is dealing with the people who are WFH who want to chat like they're on island time.

I would love to hand you some of mine. The influx of meetings along with work tied to the economic downturn has me doing a day's worth of work by 9 a.m.

I'm a little annoyed that our HR department isn't extending our ability to utilize carry-over days from 2019 past June 30th, 2020.

Granted, it's my own damn fault for not using them last year but it seems a little pointless to use them now when I can't go anywhere.

Weather is supposed to be nice monday in NJ .  I have days to use or lose as well so Monday it is.   Plenty of things to do outdoors.   Anything really beats being tethered to a computer all day regardless of whether you're doing work or not.

I'm on week 3 and like it.  It helps to have a set up in the basement where I'm left alone - it kind of lets me separate work and home.  My company has MS Teams - it works great.  Conference calls are easy, you can call or IM someone direct and can do video calls.  It helps to have a headset.  We have projects set up where there is/can be a group chat so you can post updates and put @personsname to specifically notify someone.

Headsets of some sort are critical otherwise there seems to be echo/feedback when people are listening and it feeds back into the microphone.

And the mute/unmute button is the Reply All of the WFH environment.

When using Zoom I always have it call my phone, then your computer mic is disabled, and your phone tends to have a much better microphone. I don't think you can do that if you are the host of the meeting though. Also in settings you can set it where you just hold spacebar to unmute, so if you are not talking much that is an easy way to briefly unmute for a comment.

Not sure how I can survive kids though, they are already going crazy with boredom, and I would not be surprised if we have 2 more months of this.

My home office chair needed a major upgrade, so I went to the office today to, ummm, borrow one.  I feel like king or something now at my home desk!

I am thinking about going in and borrowing one of our extra 27” monitors and a docking station because this 13” laptop screen is for people with way better eyesight than this old dog.

oh yeah, I borrowed a second monitor on day one when I went in to grab my mouse, keyboard, and dock.  I have been working from on on Wednesdays for a couple years now, and it was always a struggle without the second screen, so when I saw the writing on the wall, I made sure to get my hands on one for home.  b

ETA:   I also borrowed A LOT of coffee beans today :oldundure:

Multiple monitors, multiple laptops, Microsoft Teams, and a headset. Now on Week 3 and so far it's going well, although I do miss going into the office. I can't complain about more time with the family and the short commute time, though.

I honestly dont know how you full time WFH guys do this. Once in a while is cool but every day just SUCKS.

Obviously the fact that we're quarantined (and I live alone) makes it worse, but its super boring.

I have the ability to work from home almost whenever but its nice to get out too. Both kids and the wife being home has lost its luster in week 3. Im sure for them as much as me. lol.

As someone who has been working from home for a bit over three years now, I actually same the same about those that go in to work. It sucks, how do you do it? Oddly enough, I was not a huge fan of WFH at first. But once I settled in to it, going in to the office now is absolutely dreadful to me. But admittedly I am not a social person. I am fine with it just being me and the wife.

Im with you.  Outside of avoiding a long commute, id much rather go into the office.

This for sure - I was already mostly work from home, only had to come in when meetings required a physical presence. And the nature of my work, I can pretty much do it when I need to as long as I am getting it done, so I was able to set up my daily schedule so that when the wife and kids were at work/school, I could put aside 60-90 minutes of quiet time for myself, watch a show I wanted to uninterrupted, etc.

I'm about to the point where I may have to fake being on conference calls/meetings just to get a bit more quiet time.

But overall it's still been okay - California announced that the rest of the school year will be done remotely, so the kids will be around for the foreseeable future.

Hang in there, it will get easier :hifive: ..

you all were slammed into it rather then a gradual change.. At my last company I worked from home 2 days a week for 2 years. Then switched to full time from home, which I did for 3 years.

Been at this new company for a year now where I only worked from home once a week.. The first week of "forced" full time was a challenge to get use to. But now after 3 weeks I've settled in.

Pretty sure that whenever we go back to "normal" work week it will take a good week to get use to that again..

We use Skype and are transitioning to MS Teams.  It's often used for 1-to-1, but people are not using it for conversations with multiple people.
We’ve been using Teams for a while and it’s fantastic.  Any time I plan to send an email I’ve conditioned myself to use a Teams chat first.  I’ve also got in to the habit where if I get included in an email chain, after 2-3 replies I do Reply All via Teams and make the chat the subject line of the email - so much more efficient.
