Obviously haven't read the book, but didn't Will Smith die in I Am Legend?
Just like 300, the original film was so wildly successful compared to projections and hopes, that a prequel was discussed between Francis Lawrence and Will Smith. It would have covered the timeline after the helicopter crash on the bridge and before you see him three years later. Some of the rumors were that Emma Thompson would reprise her role and that half the movie would be about a convoy run and the other half would be the defense of the last military facility on the east coast, where the last hope for a cure was held. Two of the major plot points was that Smith's role as a scientist had actually made some aspects of the plague worse and the other was that the last half of the movie involves the lengths the rest of the humans go to keep Smith alive. Which explains some of his survivors guilt in the original.

Pitt had seen a few of the treatments and wanted to sell the unused combat footage to Warner Brothers to account for the early outline of a montage of world wide military failure to defend major cities. And how those major cities fell. My guess is it's a last ditch attempt to actually recoup some of the budget instead of having a massively expensive DVD extra. Any green lit Legend 2 would only purchased if Pitt costarred with Smith and took second billing and Pitt would sign on for Legend 3 ( would pick up where Alice Braga and the child reach the fortress in the safe zone) on his own as the lead.
I follow the first paragraph, but the second one has me completely lost. What does Pitt have to do with I Am Legend?

I think he is trying to say that they shot some non-nondescript high budget action scenes for WWZ that they can't use now, but that they could be used somehow in an I Am Legend prequel, however, for it to make sense Pitt would have to also be a co-star in the prequel, and then his character would reappear in a third installment (taking place after the original Will Smith movie) as the main character where Smith's (who is now dead) companion escaped to.

Ah, I don't see that happening with Francis Lawrence saying a possible prequel was dead. Furthermore, with them showing the finale as it currently stands, and not using the alternate which sounds like a better idea, I can't see them having a I am Legend 2 involving Will Smith.

Saw it tonight with ten guys from the neighborhood. I actually really enjoyed it, good stuff. Much better than expected.

Saw it and it was meh. Read the book and thought that was cool. I would give it a C- as it lacked it characters (besides Pitt), gore (which I knew), and a plotline that made sense.

Regarding GG's post about a Legend prequel - I would absolutely pay to see that. I loved I Am Legend even though I only watched it once and have no desire to see it again. One of the better sci-fi flicks in recent memory.

I am Legend is a terrible movie and made the novella that much better. The novella is pretty good and the movie took a crap on it. Complete travesty that movie was.

So, you are saying we have different opinions? Cool.

No it's not. It's a decent movie with a terrible ending.
I thought the ending is what really cemented the book as a great one for me, turns the perception of the situation on its head and is very though-provoking. (And is the reason for the title "I am Legend"!... its meaningless to the movie version)

So of course it wouldn't work for a big budget movie... someone needs to save the day and have a happy ending. So yes, as usual, hollywood takes a crap on the actual content of the source material in order to make a movie that will be more acceptable to the masses.

The alternate ending was a much better one but was still unsatisfying. Is that how it's done in the book?

Saw it last night but I had to many beers prior. From what I recall it was so so. I did not understand a lot of it but that may have been due to the beer. I have questions but I dont want to spoil anything so I will wait.

I honestly feel like I should see it again sober but my gut says it is not worthy of a second viewing although I think a lot of it would be new to me.

Not really but hints slightly at it. I would strongly recommend reading the book since its a great quick read of great influence on the genre...

I Am Legend is a 1954 horror fiction novel by American writer Richard Matheson. It was influential in the development of the zombie genre and in popularizing the concept of a worldwide apocalypse due to disease. The novel was a success and was adapted to film asThe Last Man on Earth in 1964, as The Omega Man in 1971, and as I Am Legend in 2007, along with a direct-to-video 2007 production capitalizing on that film, I Am Omega. The novel was also the inspiration behind the 1968 film Night of the Living Dead.
But if you want to jump to the difference and "wow" moment of the conclusion, which I will most likely butcher and not convey as well as the book since I read a long time ago, with help from the Wiki...

Neville survives by barricading himself by sunset inside his house, further protected by garlic, mirrors, and crucifixes. Swarms of vampires regularly surround his house, trying to find ways to get inside. During the day, he scavenges for supplies and searches out the inactive vampires, driving stakes into their hearts to kill them.

After three years, Neville sees an apparently uninfected woman, Ruth, abroad in the daylight, and captures her. After some convincing, Ruth tells him her story of how she and her husband survived the pandemic (though her husband was killed two weeks earlier). Ruth reluctantly allows him to take a blood sample but knocks him unconscious when the sample reveals that she is infected.

When he wakes, Neville discovers a note from Ruth confessing that she is actually infected and that Neville was responsible for her husband's death. Ruth admits that she was sent to spy on him. The infected have slowly overcome their disease until they can spend short periods of time in sunlight, and are attempting to build a new society. They have developed medication which helps them to overcome the most severe symptoms of the infection.

Infected members of the new society eventually attack the house. Realising that the intention of the attackers may be to kill him rather than to capture him he tries to defend himself with a pistol, leading to one of the infected shooting and badly injuring him. He is captured and imprisoned.

After discussing the effects of Neville's vampire killing activities on the new society, Ruth acknowledges the need for Neville's execution. Neville goes to his prison window and sees the infected waiting for his execution. He now sees that the infected view him with the same hatred and fear that he once felt for the vampires; he realizes that he, a remnant of old humanity, is now a legend to the new race born of the infection. He recognizes that their desire to kill him is not something he can condemn. He thinks: "[i am] a new superstition entering the unassailable fortress of forever. I am legend."

Great book. IIRC, they've KIND of done it three times now, once as a Vicnent Price movie, once with Charlton Heston and now with Will Smith. IMO< they've failed all three times.

Not based on the book at all. They hae almost nothing in common except the same name.
Like I said before, I am a huge fan of the book and was originally very disappointed that the movie has nothing to do with the book. But, I have resolved that they are different and going to see it tomorrow

Like I said, I enjoyed it. I really liked the first 90% of the book, and the movie shares name and general theme only with the book. It was a decent summer popcorn movie. Lots of action, good extended tension. It's no Avengers, but there are worse movies out there.

I wouldn't call it a monumental flick, but I thought The Omega Man was good. Love me some Charlton Heston.

Decent zombie movie as long as you don't compare it to the book. First 20-30 minutes were better than the rest IMO.

I'd give it a B.

Heston's always cool...and the dragster that the vampires were driving around is awesome....but I don't know. I get that way....if I read something before the movie comes out.... I get picky. The movie 300 was like that. Before that I read this book called Gates of Fire....on the same subject. Needless to say, I was disappointed in 300.

I did like the chattering teeth zombie. It was creepy. Are we good to talk freely here? I dont know how to do the spoiler box with this new setup they have here.

Yah yah yah.

Very solid summer flick. Ending was a bit of a letdown, but still an enjoyable movie.

Insidous2 trailer was great

Didn't read the book, so I can't nitpick about how the movie was different. I enjoyed it. Very similar to I Am Legend, so if you liked that one, you'd like WWZ. If you didn't like Legend, you won't like this one.

Walking Dead is too soap opera. World War Z is too action flick. Both have potential but fail. I want something in between.

Its like if I could drop the cast of Walking Dead into World War Z, and get them to stop focusing on inner politics and show a little more of how it affects the globe, the military, etc., that'd be the sweet spot.

You lost me Walking Dead is too soap opera.

I enjoy Walking Dead - but it IS a soap opera. The real villains are human. The zombie thing just serves as a mechanism - but it doesn't move the story along.

Pretty good movie-never read the book- I'd give it a B- in the action flick category. The story moves along

at a good pace and most of the supporting characters are decent. As an action movie it has the average

amount of "brain on hold" moments. The ending is exactly what you would expect from a Summer Hollywood

big budget movie. It is not a "go out and see it now" event but if you like movies it is worth paying full price.

I'd give it a B

Good action movie. The Zombies are superfast and pretty scary.

Only thing from the book is the Israeli's 10th man (9 men agree, the 10th must disagree) and I am guessing the nuclear explosion was from the Iran-Pakistan war.

First half is good with the Zombies breaching the Israeli wall the best part.

Ending was just there. Definitely setting up for a sequel

Also the "Patient 0" from the jungle where the doctor went and got infected was from the book. And they at least made Pitt's character a journalist and tried to tie that in.

Well in the book it was in China not South Korea. They changed that specifically to allow the movie to be shown in China.

I enjoyed it. It had it's scary moments and the zombies were fun. There were some major plot holes that you overlook because, well, it's a zombie movie after all. But that said, I felt like I got my money's worth. I saw Monsters U and that this weekend, and happy I saw those 2 in the theaters but will be waiting to see Man of Steel on disc.

Saw it last night, I thought it was okay. All of my hangups are on me however as I came into the movie with expectations because of what I know of the Max Brooks universe, which of course this movie does not seem to take place in.

And as far as an I Am Legend sequel/prequel, I would much rather they started over and actually followed the source material, which was infinitely better and absolutely nothing like the movie.

Saw it yesterday. Enjoyed it, but it wasn't as good as the book. Came away a bit underwhelmed with the ending. Didn't help my movie experience that right after they landed in South Korea, the movie shut off. Every movie in the place did. Was a full half hour before they came back, and when id did, they skipped a whole bunch of the movie. Basically we saw them land in South Korea, then it came back and they were getting back on the plane to leave. Theatre didn't even give out free movies or at the very least free popcorn. No one even came in to the theatre to explain what happened or to apologize.

You should have raised hell, thats unacceptable and part of the reason why theaters are going out of business.
