World's Greatest Draft (1 Viewer)

I am shocked that this guy is still here, as he's one of the first people I think of in this category

3.11 Charles Dickens, Novelist

Influencing many novelists later on, he was the most popular author in the Victorian Era. Among his most famous novels include A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities, David Copperfield, Great Expectations, Little Dorrit, and Bleak House. His full bio covering other parts of his life is here.
It was a toss up between Chaucer and Dickens for me. I liked the transition that Chaucer did though.
:kicksrock: It was between Dickens and Magellan for me, I thought Dickens might actually last to the end of the 4th. :moneybag:

For instance, when FUBAR drafted Muhammad "as a leader for now", and so he is listed. In his own sig, though, FUBAR has him down as Religious Figure.
yes, thank you. Please change Mohammad to Religious Figure. More aptly, the #1 religious figure (with apologies to our savior)

I have a person that I would like to draft in the next round so no one draft him/her, K Thanks

Also is Fubar the Leader judge. I think it says that in post 1 but he is drafting. Sure someone else came in as the judge

Doesn't look like we'll see another pick before the clock begins. If there are no picks before 10 a.m. Monday, then the first pick is due by 11:00 a.m. EST.

3.14 Usual21 - Next Selection

3.15 thatguy - On Deck

3.16 Andy Dufresne - In the Hole

3.17 Herbert The Hippo

3.18 Bobbylayne

3.19 Mister CIA

3.20 Abrantes

4.01 Abrantes

4.02 Mister CIA

4.03 Bobbylayne

4.04 Herbert The Hippo

Reminders: The clock is on from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Monday - Friday. You have one hour from the prior selection to make your pick. If the clock expires and you are skipped, your next pick will be auto skipped to the next drafter. Please send a PM to the drafter who follows you. Picks will continue when the clock is off, but the only skips will those who are on auto skip.

As a courtesy, if you know you will be unavailable, please post that so we can save time and skip your turn. Also, some may chose to voluntarily be put on auto skip either because hey won't be available or prefer not to be rushed by the clock.

HOUSEKEEPING

You may change categories for any of your draft picks at any time up until the draft ends. There are several in the Leaders category who may belong more appropriately in Military, Rebel, Villain, et al, but that is entirely up to the discretion of the drafter.

I have a person that I would like to draft in the next round so no one draft him/her, K Thanks
PM me and I will approve or not.
Is trading of draft picks allowed. If not then I will send it your way and see what you thinkBobby, no such luck for you since you pick before me
I don't mind any PM's for picks as long as I can stay impartial... meaning, I will not disclose if they are whom I am looking at. I will be vague but still interested in who is on the radar of others.

Goodwork BL. If you keep this going, and it's not too much work, it would be nice to see the draft position each one was taken as well.
It's too much work; go to hell. :lmao:

I have 4 on my short sheet right now, just make sure 2 of them fall to my next 2 picks, TIA.I'm currently the judge, but if someone else wants to, they can have at it. I originally wasn't going to draft. If I remain the judge, Tim will evaluate my leader and I'll just judge the other 19.

I'm not seeking it, but if you want someone to judge the leaders, so you can be a drafter, I would be willing to do it. But it's ok either way.

I already am a drafter. I honestly don't care if I judge leaders or not. If non-drafters want it, I say have at it.

Yes. What I meant was so that you could singlemindedly devote all your time, attention, inquiry, scrutiny, search, effort, work, thought, analysis, imagination, intellectual power, focus, meditation, pondering, prioritizing, ranking, and reasoning to your draft picks.

3.14 - James Cook - Explorer

The greatest ocean explorer ever and the prototype of the scientific explorer. His three voyages of discovery, the first starting in 1769, explored the Pacific Ocean. Covering one-third of the earth’s surface, it was an area that, with the exception of a few trade routes, was largely unknown to Europeans. Cook’s methodical explorations, along with his courage and ability to motivate men incredibly far from home, made him probably the most capable explorer of all time.

Captain James Cook was an English explorer, navigator and cartographer, ultimately rising to the rank of Captain in the Royal Navy. Cook was the first to map Newfoundland prior to making three voyages to the Pacific Ocean during which he achieved the first European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands as well as the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand.

Cook joined the British merchant navy as a teenager and joined the Royal Navy in 1755. He saw action in the Seven Years' War, and subsequently surveyed and mapped much of the entrance to the Saint Lawrence River during the siege of Quebec. This allowed General Wolfe to make his famous stealth attack on the Plains of Abraham, and helped to bring Cook to the attention of the Admiralty and Royal Society. This notice came at a crucial moment both in his personal career and in the direction of British overseas exploration, and led to his commission in 1766 as commander of HM Bark Endeavour for the first of three Pacific voyages.

Cook charted many areas and recorded several islands and coastlines on European maps for the first time. His achievements can be attributed to a combination of seamanship, superior surveying and cartographic skills, courage in exploring dangerous locations to confirm the facts (for example dipping into the Antarctic circle repeatedly and exploring around the Great Barrier Reef), an ability to lead men in adverse conditions, and boldness both with regard to the extent of his explorations and his willingness to exceed the instructions given to him by the Admiralty.

Cook died in Hawaii in a fight with Hawaiians during his third exploratory voyage in the Pacific in 1779.

Great pick, Usual21. The Hawaiians thought he was the god Lono, fulfilling an ancient legend. Bit then the third time he came back it broke the legend, and he also took a chieftain hostage. From Wiki:

After a month's stay, Cook got under sail again to resume his exploration of the Northern Pacific. However, shortly after leaving Hawai`i Island, the foremast of the Resolution broke and the ships returned to Kealakekua Bay for repairs. It has been hypothesized that the return to the islands by Cook's expedition was not just unexpected by the Hawaiians but unwelcome because the season of Lono had recently ended (though this presumes that Cook was connected in some way with Lono and Makahiki). In any case, tensions rose and a number of quarrels broke out between the Europeans and Hawaiians. On 14 February at Kealakekua Bay, some Hawaiians took one of Cook's small boats. Normally, as thefts were quite common in Tahiti and the other islands, Cook would have taken hostages until the stolen articles were returned.[2] Indeed, he attempted to take hostage the King of Hawai`i, Kalaniopu`u. The Hawaiians prevented this, and Cook's men had to retreat to the beach. As Cook turned his back to help launch the boats, he was struck on the head by the villagers and then stabbed to death as he fell on his face in the surf.[16] The Hawaiians dragged his body away. Four of the Marines with Cook were also killed and two wounded in the confrontation.

Great pick. He ranged all over the Pacific, discovering islands and mapping the area.

Although Cook was British, it was other countries that benefited most from his discoveries. Hawaii was soon dominated by America, for example, which used the Islands as a harbor for it's whalers in the first half of the 19th Century. Tahiti was dominated by France.

I hardly think that New Zealand and Australia would agree with that. Great Britain had a problem after 1776 (most Americans don't know this). They didn't have a place to send their jailbirds. Enter Australia. Problem solved.

you're right about Australia. I forgot that he basically discovered that too. And New Zealand.

Who will be around that can post his 4.16 pick? Ozymandias? timschochet?

One of the drafters that comes after him who doesn't have a pick before then (FUBAR, Arsenal of Doom, Larry Boy 44, Mario Kart)?

Thanks. Lets see how it goes. If picks start flying off, maybe we dont have to worry about it. Do people usually take the entire hour?

Interesting fact about Cook I learned as I read more of his Wiki page:

The site where he was killed in Hawaii is marked by a white obelisk and about 25 square feet (2.3 m2) of land around it is chained off. This land, though in Hawaii, has been given to the United Kingdom. Therefore, the site is officially a part of the UK.

I'd say there is no usual pattern, but being the first day the clock is on, I expect things to move along.

But rumor has it some people have work to do so apparentely W.G.D. isn't their #1 priority.

Just wanted to thank Tim (or whoever came up with this idea). I am planning on using something like this in class and having the pricipals and teachers be the judges.

 I have this loser cousin who was in his own (really bad) rock band up until his early 30's. He lived with his folks (still does), and did nothing but plan his future career as a rock star. Anyhow, one holiday I was talking to him and I politely asked how the whole rock band thing was going. He complained bitterly that it would be better except that the other guys in the band didn't share his "dedication"; they were always putting things like "work" ahead of art. The way he said "work" was with such disdain- the daily dull job that true "artists" don't lower themselves to do. I was hard put not to laugh in his face. You just made me think of that.

You're welcome; credit Orange Crush for coming up with the American draft idea; this is just a logical extension. Also, drafts for subjects other than football have been going on here a long time; I don't know who started it, but it's a really fun idea. I certainly can't take credit.

Work ruined my punk rock career

I think Acer's idea is great, especially for the American draft: I would think it would be a very stimulating lesson for high school history students, for instance, to have to compete in a draft of either great Americans or great people worldwide. You could have groups of students (2-3) competing against each other, and offer a prize at the end. What a wonderful learning tool!

It's a good thing the World Leader draft we did a few years back was purged otherwise this wouldn't be as fun.
