Worst (Best?) Draft Day Trades EVER (1 Viewer)

I just caught the NFL Films top 10 Draft Trades. I somehow forgot that Ditka traded his ENTIRE freaking draft to jump up from the 12th to the 5th overall pick to get Ricky Williams. Makes you wonder who was smoking hootch.

Washington's then-general manager Charlie Casserly gave up the fifth selection in the first round of the 1999 draft that Mike Ditka used on Ricky Williams for all six of Iron Mike's picks that year (1-12, 3-71, 4-107, 5-144, 6-179 and 7-218) plus 1st and 3rd-round choices in 2000 that became the 2nd and 64th overall.

Anyways...what are some others that you recall, or any background you know on this trade? It is MADNESS and was sure to get Ditka fired (which it did).

Adam Shefter had a very funny comment (I think it was him) saying he couldn't believe that the Redskins did SQUAT with those picks and that they should have become a dynasty given all that currency.

Some interesting comments here... http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m120...25/ai_80680563/

Here are the players chosen with the eight draft picks the Saints gave up: one budding star (Redskins linebacker LaVar Arrington), one decent player (Broncos tight end Desmond Clark), one player who has barely kept his roster spot (Bears receiver D'Wayne Bates), three players who are on their second team after failing with their first (Dolphins quarterback Cade McNown, Lions linebacker Khari Samuel and Chargers cornerback Lloyd Harrison), one player who is out of the league (former Broncos receiver Billy Miller) and one who never played in the NFL (former Redskins draft pick Nate Stimson, a linebacker).

And there is more to consider. By trading away eight draft picks, the Saints acquired more than $12 million in cap space.

"It wasn't just about one player; it was a cap cleansing," says Kuharich, who, along with Ditka and the rest of the Saints' coaching staff, was fired shortly after the 1999 season ended.

I actually researched that one and put alot of good links in a post on that one a few weeks back. That was fairly astounding. I don't think that was consummated on draft day, tho.

You're right. It occurred four games into the season in mid-October.I missed the "draft day" part of your title.I'd say the Tomlinson/Vick and E. Manning/Rivers picks were also one sided.

Well to be fair, the Redskins used a good chunk of those picks to trade up to get Champ Bailey and then in 2000 to trade up to #3 and draft Chris Samuels. So they got 2 future HOF candidates out of the deal.

1996--Jerome Bettis for a 1996 2nd round pick (Ernie Conwell) and a 1997 4th rounder (Ryan Tucker?).

That''s the thing about draft day. People get crazy and irrational and that leads to these stupidly one sided deals.

The craziest thing about the Saints deal is that the Bengals turned the deal down when it was offered to them for the #3 pick so they could pick ... Akili Smith!!

Outrageous.

Snippet from article:

"That was the biggest deal I ever turned down. Maybe next year or three years from now I'll say, 'If we'd have done that, golly, would we be in better shape?' I hope I don't have to think that." – Bengals owner/president Mike Brown on April 17, 1999, admitting that he drafted Smith rather than accept a trade offer from the New Orleans Saints that would have delivered nine draft picks, including three first-round choices.

The Jets trading Two 1st round picks to move up to #4 to get Dewayne Robertson still kills me....

Bradway admits he needed to make a splash after public and media perception was that the Redskins fleeced him in the off season. He gave up the 14th a 22nd and a 4th round.

Then the bears used those picks on Rex Grossman and Michael Haynes.....so maybe the Jets made out better....lol.

WOW! Didn't know that.

I hope someone gets kooky. CAN'T WAIT!

In 2002 New England traded Drew Bledsoe to Buffalo for the Bills 2003 first round pick. That pick was used to draft Ty Warren.

In 2004 the Browns traded the #7 and #37 picks to Detroit to move up one spot in the draft. The Browns wanted Kellen Winslow Jr. The Lions took Roy Williams @ 7 and Teddy Lehman @ 37.

I was going to post that one. Detroit wasn't even going to take Sgt. Winslow II, anyway. The trade basically amounted to them getting an early 2nd rounder to pick they guy they wanted 15 minutes later than they originally would have and to pay him half a million less than they originally would have.

The Ricky Williams trade will likely always be tops with me. Ditka was talking trash (talking up Ricky Williams before the draft) and basically showed his hand. He said he'd trade his whole draft, and then backed it up by doing so.

Had he not done so, I'd imagine the Saints could have landed a Ricky Williams pick for a far better price.

So, it wasn't just a crappy trade. It was crappier than it needed to be.
