Would you genetically engineer the gender of your child? (1 Viewer)

Otis

Footballguy
Curious about this.

Otis is the proud dad of 3 girls. I love them eternally and frankly think I’m a much more natural girl Dad than boy dad. Not huge into sports, not all that athletic, not a frat guy, and never the type to be like “oh man, I never got to have a catch with my son!”  (I basically throw like a girl anyway).

Heres the one and only reason I would want a son: to name him after my dad, who is an amazing guy. Maybe the classiest guy I ever met. My dad named me after his dad, first and middle name both, and so I’m Otis the 2nd. Always imagined doing the same with a son one day. I also am the last male in my lineage, so if no boy, the Otis last name dies with me. We ain’t the Rockefellers or anything, so how much does that really matter in the grand scheme, but it’s a factor.

I didn’t care enough to try and do the timing and all the tricks. We just made whoopie and let the chips fall where they may. Otis has always gotten by well by trying to do the right thing in life and just relying on fate and trusting that what is meant to be will be.  And that feels right to me.

Mrs. O is on the fence about a 4th. I have told her that I know that odds here — it’s like 99% chance our fourth would be a girl. I’ve also said I’m totally fine with that, and it’s true — Otis likes the idea of a big Otis clan, leaving a legacy and a tight knit crew to care for each other and have great extended family long after we are gone. And to have four girls would be bad ###.  If we have a fourth, that will be it  Mrs. O refuses to birth a 5th.  I can’t say I blame her.

That said, Mrs. O tells me that these days you could select your gender. It’s thousands of dollars but I guess they pluck out her egg, choose a boy sperm, and pop the combo back up in there.

The money isn’t an issue. The issue in my mind is one of going against the fates. If we did this and selected a boy, I could do that thing for my dad I always wanted to. That would feel good.  And our name would live on, for whatever little that matters.  That said, if he ended up an ##### or serial killer, I’d probably always be left with this sense that it happened because we did something unnatural, we went against the universe’s will, and it was not accepted by the fates.

If you’re in my shoes, do you give it a go and make your 4th a boy?  Or just make a fourth and let it be what it is?  Or do you not have another kid, because three are already a colossal amount of work and cost as it is, and there’s something to be said for shutting off the factory while Oats is 41 and Mrs O is 33 and we can both get past the baby phase and just enjoy each other more again.

Not a huge deal, but wondering what others think about this.

This is the only AC forum post I’ll ever make.

Will answer yours.

By the way, don’t want that to read like I’m not grateful. I am blessed beyond blessed. I’m so happy and lucky with all the hands I’ve been deslt, even including having to deal with guys like MoP and Cav and Bobbylane. This is trivial. It’s like driving a Ferrari and being like “eh, but should I change the license plate cover from brushed nickel to brushed aluminum?”  Really just curious to see how others feel about this kind of thing.

Oh and by the way I’m in a cigar bar in Tokyo right now and trashed, and I haven’t spoken English to anyone in days now. So really I may just be drunk and desperate for a conversation. WTF ARE YOU GUYS

Oh and I have recent underwear pics of my wife that belong in Maxim. Srsly.  After three kids. I’ve been shorted nothing in life.

Well, I never got my full mod privileges reinstated. Only half mod. So there’s that. Effin Dodds.

WTF. Where are furley and shuke and tanner and tigerfan and wilkedfan when I need them. WHERE’S NIPSEY AND FULLER.

The IVF route is a bit more invasive, but if you go the IUI route, they can spin your boys somehow to give something like an 85% chance of hitting your preferred gender. My wife and I would have likely done it if first two had been 2 of the same gender to give us an opposite.

ETA: It's a sad feeling to have to jack it on Old Country Rd and then go into work. I'd pick up the LIRR at the Mineola station and feel everyone's eyes silently judging.

No I wouldn’t.

Where do you draw the proverbial line?  Can you test each swimmer to select the most athletic kid?

No, but in the cultures comprising approximately half of the world's population this would happen all the time. With disastrous effects.

I promised I’ve jacked it under far more depressing circumstances.

This is my concern. Feels wrong.  But maybe that’s stupid. Think about how much of our lives we engineer. With medicine and everything around us. Is this really that different?

I had three girls first. Then a boy. Then another boy because he needed a brother. Just go for it naturally. Have the 4th see what happens.  I believe in you.

Right. But then you start advancing that line and get to selecting eye and hair color, handedness, etc. Is this really all that different?

How about disease prevention?

Its a tough one to think through.

Hence my hard hitting thread.

Tell me more about this IUI 85% thing. Mrs O says IVF is a nightmare and takes forever. No way is it worth that. If you press a button at the hospital and choose, like do you want a receipt or not at the gas pump, that’s a different thing. The line for me is somewhere in the middle.

How is choosing the gender now different building a fire 15000 years ago, or taking antibiotics 100 years ago?  If money isn't an object, then you should employ any technology you can to dominate spacetime until heat death.

There are other ways to show respect and gratitude besides the name of your kid. Like a personalized cookie cake.

There are several natural ways to engineer the sex of your child. The tough thing for you is that typically when you have produced only girls it means your wife is not having an orgasm during conception. Not making a joke, this is medical fact and you can look it up.

If I could select the smartest, best looking, healthiest, most compassionate swimmer, of course I would.

This is correct. Also the boy-making sperm aren't able to swim as far as the girl-making sperm, so men with shorter penises tend to produce more girls.

My sister in law did iui and she had quads. 2 boys and 2 girls.

I don't preach it often but seriously consider adoption.

We have 4 biological boys, wife wanted a girl and honestly I did too. Plus it felt right so we adopted a girl from China. Best choice we've made. So many kids need a good home and if money isn't an issue you can do some real good here.

LOOK AT ME, MY WIFE IS SQUIRTING ACROSS THE ROOM AND I HAVE A MASSIVE DONG!

I’m all for Gattaca science of selecting/creating super babies. However, in this situation, it’s a little different since it might cause a rift in the family. Having a love baby and it turns out to be a boy is one thing but your girls might see this as a slight against them. That they are such bad children that you had to get a doctor to come in and make sure you had a boy. He will (most likely) end up being the youngest which usually comes with “getting all the attention”, and he gets a special name/title right out of the chute. So, clearly he is the Chosen One.

Maybe you’ve talked to your daughters about it and they are all for it? Or are certain this isn’t an issue. If this is the case, I’d say go for it. Another shotgun wielding Otis will be valuable during the apocalypse.

Are you really going to tell your kids about the procedures?

So far (it's only been a month) our boys are showing no jealousy. In this regard adoption might be more difficult as it's visibly obvious that we wanted a girl. But her brothers adore her. No issues, yet.

That's super far from any line.

When you're doing the fertility route, you can pay a few grand to spin the sperm to get a better chance at a preferred gender. We looked into this to get a girl on our second kid but decided to roll the dice instead...ended up with girl.

And if there was a chance to spin out some disease (don't know if that's currently an option), why wouldn't you? I don't see this as crafting a super-human, just ensuring a healthy baby. And in Otis' case, one that isn't a lame girl.

I teach HS so it's not the same as parenting but I'm pretty familiar with teens. I'll take the girl 9 times out of 10.
Fair enough. From what I've seen and worked with (youth groups and family stuff) boys are crazy but girls, especially teenage girls, are more dramatic. I'll take the crazy energy. Depends on the kid of course.

Sure, but it could get that way. Not the question at hand, so a bit of a tangent.

Yeah girls are plenty dramatic, I just deal with that better than I deal with the immaturity and the too cool to care attitude so many teen boys have.

I don’t know what the best route is as far as telling them or not. After 3 girls in a row, someone might say something like, “Wow, I thought for sure it would be another girl.” Not telling them or potentially, in this case, lying about it doesn’t seem right. But if you don’t tell them initially and they find out then it could turn into an issue. I’m just saying it could be a potential rift. Just trying to point out a potential issue.

I don’t want to compare your family to anyone else’s. Family is the hard line in the sand. Otis drunk talking about a currently hypothetical situation is fair discussion but not your (or anyone else’s) family. Congratulations on the newest member of your clan, by the way.

Yeah I don’t see why we would or should tell our kids. Doesn’t seem like anything anyone needs to know about. Well, except the whole internet.

Wife & I discussed this after our first (boy), we wanted a 2nd boy - we decided to just stick to the Shettles method... IDK if I was supposed to have boys or it really works, but we had another boy.

If you want another girl, doesn't seem like you have to change much, but if you want a boy, here are my tips:

Timing; close to ovulation

Position; doggy, deep penetration

Climax; partner needs an orgasm before you (preferably multiple)

Drink a few cups of coffee 30-45 minutes before doing the deed
