WR Brandin Cooks, Free Agent (3 Viewers)

He looked great.  Brady sucked.  He could have had a long td as well.  As good as advertised.

Count me in on the impressed crowd. Could have easily had 150 yards. Amendola cant stay healthy, Gronk didnt look like the same guy. Just need Brady to step it up cause he wasnt sharp.

Cooks is what he is, he will get a score next week against New Orleans, he is hit or miss on TDs but he should get you 88 yards, at least, right?

Gronk wasnt the same guy? Dude was shut down by one of the best defenders in all of football. Sluggish maybe because of knocking off rust, but Gronk is not the reason Brady was clearing it over his and everyones head and hitting his feet with great consistency.

We knew the moment Manning lost it, we may now know the moment Brady lost it.

This game is eerily similar to the last time KC spanked New England a couple of years ago starting all of the "Brady is done and so are the Pats." In reality, this gives the team a needed gut check that they aren't invincible. I fully expect them to respond and start looking like the Patriots we all know next week. I would hate to face Brady vs the Saints.

KC's secondary played lights out and blanketed Cooks and Gronk. They will both get theirs this season. I couldn't get over how tiny Cooks looks out there.

I think this is partially true but I also think "next man up" has its limitations. This was sort of a perfect storm game for the Pats so there will be a lot of overreaction but you can only plug the next guy in so many times before the cracks begin to show.

The Pats still have weapons and Cooks should have better games.  He was targeted and drew penalties.  Brady looked rusty and his with Cooks should improve as the season rolls on.

Cooks will be very good this year.  wish I had him. The price of a mid 2nd round pick was too much IMO.   He is worth that from what he showed last night.

Cooks had two potential receptions for around 40 yards that he drew defensive pass interference, and another play he was literally tackled in the end zone for defensive holding. Bottom line, he could easily have had 130ish receiving yards on a poor night for Brady. Given that they are essentially down to him and Hogan at WR for next week, he will have to see a lot of targets. Plus it's the playing the team that traded you story line. My guess is they will take one of the RBs and use him as a WR in the short term.

Do you think Phillip Dorsett will become a factor after more practice time?

Hard to say he obviously played (Dorset) several snaps but I don't remember Tom even looking on his side of the field on those plays. Anyone recall?

Do you think Phillip Dorsett will become a factor after more practice time?
No. I think he is a project and BB figured he was likely to cut Brissett anyway, why not take a shot and see what Dorsett can do. The issue short term is the Pats need an underneath slot guy, not another stretch the field and rarely see targets guy. While the OL did ok last night and Brady had a lot of time to throw, most of that was from a 3 man pass rush. I would guess other teams will get more pressure and Brady won't have consistent time to throw deep. Add in that it takes forever to absorb the Patriots play book and I don't think Dorsett will be all that helpful this year. NE's best hope for another body might be Malcolm Mitchell halfway through the season if his knee gets better . . . and Mitchell would be more of an outside mid range receiver than a middle of the field underneath slot guy.

I'm not too worried as an owner, but the thing that sucks is that Cooks doesn't run the types of routes that Brady loves throwing. Luckily it's a non-PPR league, but I still fear all of his production has to come in chunks, and that's always inconsistent.

No, gronk didnt look the same to me. Could be rust but he moved differently. Looked like he was still in some pain to me.

When they gwt on the same page I'm sure they will be good. Btw, doesn't cooks get a game against his former team REAL soon??

Maybe i'm in the minority here but Cooks seem to struggle getting separation to me.  I saw on numerous occasions he was in man/press coverage and seemed to struggle getting off the line.

He is on New England now. He will have some big games but they love to use different guys each game.  The RB frustrations will also be part of the WR frustrations.

The Patriots are down to Cooks and Hogan as realistic WR options for now. Dorsett has been on the team for a week. Slater (banged up himself) is listed as a WR but plays almost entirely special teams. If I were a Cooks owner, I would not be worried about his targets over the next few games.

I would agree that the WR situation seems to favor Cooks getting more WR targets but he has been a WR with lots of ups and downs week to week and now on a team that changes things up week to week. Overall I think he has a good season but will be highly predictable. It's the Patriots so they could give someone like Dion Lewis 12 catches next week just because they can. I also agree with Smails that Cooks will be the WR the opposition will try to keep from beating them.

If I play NE I double Cooks. Make Hogan, a slow Gronk, and White beat me.
In that case, Gronk will beat you. Not every team has Eric Berry at safety.

What did you see about Cooks that impressed?

I didn't see much separation. He got a couple free inches on a deep pass that Brady put on the money. The way I saw it, Brady made Cooks look good.

I remember one play he beat his defender up the sideline and had a step, but the throw went underneath.  He also worked himself open in the endzone but Brady didn't see him and threw elsewhere.

88 yards is 1408 for the season, which is obviously very good.  The TDs will come, as will more targets.  He'll get plenty of opportunities and I'd be happy long term if I had him on my squad.

I was never as high on Cooks as everyone else but recognize that the Chiefs have one of the best defenses, top to bottom.  Not a lot of WRs will be getting tremendous separation against their DBs/safeties.

Not even KC has Berry at safety now.  Gronk will eat, and so will Cooks.  If "Brady making Cooks look good" is what's needed to get points out of Cooks, I'll start him all day long.

Not arguing against Cooks as a fantasy play, I responded to the idea defenses need to double cover him.

Chiefs have a good secondary, so I'm not worried about him. But I didn't think he was the best player on the field. We should have seen the last of the Moss comparisons (hopefully).

I have loved Cooks since he came into the NFL, but in my dynasty league where I own him I am ready to sell now. He is too frustrating to own, and on a night where the Pats were short receivers, and Gronk didn't look right, he should have been a target monster and only had 7 targets. Maybe I am a fool, but it is just frustrating.

It's tough to double anyone on the Pats given the number of weapons they have. The Chiefs played them mano et mano and came out on top thanks to outstanding defensive play. That won't be the case most weeks.  I actually thought Cooks did a good job last night. Brady had no problem throwing him the deep ball, he came close to scoring except for a great defensive play and drew a PI penalty that helped the Pats with field position even if they came up short on the overall game. I'd be trying to buy Cooks if you don't own him.

He almost had 160 yards and 2 TD's. He drew 2 pass interference calls in the end zone, that would have been TDs, with better throws, which should happen as he and Brady improve their timing together. Also, let's keep in mind(with berry at least) that KC is arguably the best defense in the NFL.

I saw nothing from last night to make me think Cooks won't be a top-10 WR this year, with top-5 upside.

I agree. I was much lower on him until last night's game. Brady looked for him deep all night. He drew two deep interference calls. KC is one of the best secondaries in the league (or were until Berry went down) - against lesser defenses Cooks would have had a monster game.

I'm drafting tomorrow and he moved up my draft board based on last night.

I agree with this.  Injuries mean there are less mouths to feed in NE, and KC is one of the best defenses/secondaries they will face all season.  Some monster games are coming, and if 3-88 is a "bad game," you have to like that.

Here were his targets:

  • 2nd and 7 at NE 46 (13:26 - 1st) (No Huddle, Shotgun) T.Brady pass deep left to B.Cooks pushed ob at KC 35 for 19 yards (P.Gaines).
  • 1st and 10 at KC 14 (12:24 - 1st) (No Huddle) T.Brady pass incomplete short left to B.Cooks. PENALTY on KC-T.Mitchell, Defensive Pass Interference, 12 yards, enforced at KC 14 - No Play.

This was a target inside the 5 yard line

[*]1st and 10 at KC 45 (2:05 - 1st) (No Huddle) T.Brady pass short middle to B.Cooks ran ob at KC 30 for 15 yards.

[*]3rd and 6 at NE 44 (2:59 - 2nd) (Shotgun) T.Brady pass incomplete short left to B.Cooks.

  • Good defensive play to break it up

[*]1st and 10 at KC 27 (5:40 - 3rd) (No Huddle, Shotgun) T.Brady pass incomplete deep left to B.Cooks. PENALTY on KC-T.Mitchell, Defensive Pass Interference, 26 yards, enforced at KC 27 - No Play.

  • Without DPI this was a 27 yard TD; better pass might have gotten the TD anyway (Cooks had to slow up for the ball at the goal line, leading the defender to interfere)

[*]1st and 10 at NE 28 (2:50 - 3rd) (Shotgun) T.Brady pass deep left to B.Cooks to KC 18 for 54 yards (T.Mitchell). Penalty on KC-P.Gaines, Defensive Holding, declined.

[*]2nd and 2 at KC 41 (13:02 - 4th) (Shotgun) T.Brady pass incomplete short left to B.Cooks.

[*]3rd and 10 at NE 29 (9:11 - 4th) (Shotgun) T.Brady pass incomplete short left to B.Cooks.

  • Just missed getting both feet in for about a 10 yard sideline completion

[*]3rd and 17 at NE 18 (4:38 - 4th) (Shotgun) T.Brady pass incomplete deep left to B.Cooks (T.Mitchell).

  • Great defensive play to barely tip the ball away and save a 50+ yard completion that likely would have been a 82 yard TD

That is 9 true targets, resulting in 3 completions for 88 yards and 3 total penalties, 2 of which were accepted for another 38 yards. He could have added either a 27 yard TD or 82 yard TD or both with just a little luck or slightly longer passes.

I was one who was skeptical about all of the hype over Cooks, but I am sold after watching last night's game.

How so, he woulda had 150 if not for cheaters grabbing him, lol.

He wasnt the problem last night, especially after one game, I'm not ready to sell. Its not Cooks who looks like old age caught up. FWIw, I am highly invested in both old man Tommy and Cooks.

Cooks will get 120 and a touch next week.

But he didn't. I have owned Cooks since he was a rookie. Anyone that says he isn't frustrating to own hasn't been paying attention.

We will always have posters saying what stats a player "could have had". But we'll never see a study of what all other players "could have had". PI happens to every receiver.

Anyhow, some of us saw last night show that Cooks is the same receiver he was at New Orleans (which is not shabby, I might add). But the Patriots are not the rumpelstiltskins we all have assumed. Cooks was an 1100 yard receiver with Drew Brees and he's likely an 1100 yard receiver with Tom Brady. Again, nothing to sneeze at.

Last year Allen Robinson drew a league-high 9 pass interference calls, and DeSean Jackson led the NFL with 169 yards of pass interference yardage. On average (among receivers with 50+ targets) there was 1 DPI call for every 28 receptions, and 1 DPI yard for every 22 receiving yards.

He might, then the week following he will get you single digits again, then maybe blow up.. then dud.
Sure, that may have been his pattern in NO, but a lot of that had to do with Brees' road woes. Brady doesn't have night and day splits like that.
