WR Calvin Ridley, TEN (3 Viewers)

Glad to hear he's taking time for himself to get in a good place.  That's the most important thing.

Since it's a Fantasy Football board:  I feel compelled to at least touch on the FF side of this.  But don't want to minimize the importance of mental health.

As far as Ridley:  Hold.  In dynasty, I'd even be so bold as to try to buy.

The other Falcons pass catchers not named Pitts/Patterson:  Avoid.  I started Gage last week out of desperation after the Ridley news.  Zero targets.  He may come back and catch 4 balls for 100 yards and a long score.  But you certainly can't trust him for FF at this point.
I'd buy in dynasty if some one was panic selling. We don't know the extent of Ridley's issues - but it seems likely he'd be back at some point.

Not sure why that's ???.

I started the thread in the Free For All Forum this summer. https://forums.footballguys.com/topic/798553-simone-biles-withdraws-from-competition-thoughts/. It struck me that Biles was receiving both criticism and praise for withdrawing and when I see people on both sides of something, I often will ask the forum what they think. I wasn't trying to speculate on the specifics of what she was dealing with. Same as I was here for Ridley.

I thought we were able to have a mostly good discussion in the Biles thread about mental health. You may differ.

And I'm sorry if I was confusing on Ridley. Mental health is obviously a huge topic and one to discuss in general. The Free For All forum is best for that. My point was I don't think it feels appropriate to speculate on the specific private area of the individual making guesses as to what is happening. Discussing mental health in general feels productive. Playing detective on the specific details feels more like TMZ.

it was just a little confusing as it felt as though you were asking for our thoughts..... and then at the same time telling us to "move on" and not speculate/talk about it.......

I can't speak for Ridley, but the humor in my statement is that I'm probably out of my mind for working right now after surgery.
Not a biggie. I self medicate. I’m sure you would call that just having a few beers to knock the stink off. For me it is therapy…. to each his own.

Re: Biles - I admittedly don't know very much about her or her mental health situation, but my general impression after hearing and reading a bit about these past Games, I equated the twisties to the yips.  Something that is very common for lots of athletes within a given sport, and you either work through it (whatever that looks like), or it can derail your career.  After reading this thread I'm honestly not sure if that's still an accurate analogy or way off base.  I think I'll go browse through the Biles thread in the FFA and educate myself...

I agree, twisties = yips.  Happens to golfers on their swing and mlb infielders throwing to first base (see Steve Sax).

I don’t think a case of yips describes it. Think of if you had a 200 LBs weight that kept you from moving. And no I am not fat. I weigh less than in college now even. A case of the yips would be a blessing, because yips can go away. Look at someone like Marshawn Lynch, Ricky Williams, or Jim Mcmahan and ask yourself if they had a case of the yips… or if there was something weighing them down.

Apologies for the confusion. I was looking for general thoughts on the praise/criticism of Biles. Not trying to dig down into the specific issues Biles was dealing with.

For Ridley, I feel the same. And was asking for folks here to keep it to NFL in this forum and take the more general discussion the Free For All like we did for Biles.

Ridley placed on the PUP. Will be out at least the next 3 weeks. So at least that's a more definitive timeline.

I'm still holding.

Short bench and large starting lineups (12 teams - 2qb/3rb/3wr/te/k/d) - I just couldn't hold due to many injuries and byes, dropping Ridley for Colt f'n McCoy. Ugh.

Crazy to let my 1st WR drafted go for Colt, but 3 more weeks and even after that, I don't see him slipping right back into the starting lineup and crushing it like a stud WR after time off for mental issues.

Maybe I'm wrong, is there any example of this happening before? Taking a month+ off with no practice and coming right back to when he was a true WR1?

Considered dropping Lat Murray instead, but Murray could get points over the next month. Also My FBG said 'drop Ridley' when clicking 'who do I drop?'. Go with the experts advice I guess since I sure as hell ain't one.

Was dropped in one league and I grabbed him.

That said, I'm 7-1 and with a three game lead in my division. I can afford to hold at least a couple weeks. Probably wouldn't bother if I was in a dogfight.

Best case scenario: Get some kind of news Ridley is turning the corner within this three week window. Gets back in a few weeks and is a helluva #4WR during the fantasy playoffs.

Worst case (and most likely scenario): He doesn't play another down this season.

It will probably be tough to hold if there is absolute silence on this the next two weeks.

Anyone still holding in redraft?

Dude just vanished.
Holding. 7-2, soon to be 7-3 & just lost Woods for the year.

still have a fairly deep team, so if he does come back in time for a playoff run it would help.

Not holding my breath, but I also don’t want to be the dude who drops him only to have him come back and beat me down the stretch.

Same here - holding in one league where I already had him and now lost Woods, and scooped him up off waivers in another where he was dropped.  As long as you have space to hold I can't see why you wouldn't, but if you're riddled with injuries and byes and need to add someone to start then I understand the drop

I did a lot of teams this year and I think by a close margin Ridley was my most drafted player in round 2.

For reasons I can't explain my Ridley teams are doing better then my collective non-Ridley on the whole and I just can't make sense of it. I do so many teams I can't keep all of them together and when Ridley stepped away I was pretty down after  checking my leagues and seeing how many playoff contention type teams were losing him.

As to if I'm holding him the answer is yes. For most of my teams I don't have a major bye week left , roster size is 20 and FA market in general but specifically at WR is as barren as  I can recall. So to me the potential if not likely loss of the roster spot far outweighs any consideration to cut.

Holding at 2-8 so I'm pretty much out of it anyway; lightning strike odds I win 6 straight and Ridley back for playoffs.

What happened to Calvin Ridley? Why Falcons WR suddenly stepped away from NFL

Excerpts:

Calvin Ridley will be away from the Falcons for at least one more week.

While it's unclear what exactly Ridley is going through, in a recent interview with Rich Eisen, head coach Arthur Smith wouldn't divulge his struggles.

"Like everybody, I don’t disclose people’s injuries. Players can speak, Calvin put out a statement. I’ll let Calvin speak for Calvin, just like I would for anyone on this team. If they want to talk about a knee injury, that’s their prerogative to talk about. It’s not going to come from me," Smith said.

Smith also said that the team is currently taking a week-to-week approach when it comes to Ridley, so he may be back on the field before the end of the 2021 season.

Is there more to where you grabbed this quote from?
In the article that I linked in the posting there was a second quote that I also posted that stated a little more information:

Smith also said that the team is currently taking a week-to-week approach when it comes to Ridley, so he may be back on the field before the end of the 2021 season.
It sounds like this is still a very fluid situation with no guarantee that Ridley will return this season, especially once the Falcons fall further away from playoff contention.

TY Killface, I needed him back.

I did a bunch of googling last week, there really is nothing out there on whether or not he has any intention of coming back. Apologies for those who see the thread bump and are hoping for new info.

Does anyone know if he is doing any kind of workouts or conditioning?

Falcons coach Arthur Smith did not have an update on Calvin Ridley (personal), who is now eligible to return from the reserve/NFI list.

Ridley was placed on the list after stepping away from football to focus on his mental health three weeks ago. He can be activated from the list at any time but it's unclear when that will happen. Since Ridley stepped away ahead of Week 8, the Falcons are averaging 14.3 points per game. The offensive has been completely toothless without their top option and will remain that way until he returns.

Looking more and more like out for the year. But I'm still holding. Hopefully the falcons can keep it together enough to make a comeback worthwhile.

Looking to add in one league possibly this week.  He is IR eligible and I had Carson there who is now gone.  Might as well fill that spot with Ridley.

If you've clinched a playoff spot I think he's a perfect stash.

Can't think of a higher ceiling for say, week 16, for somebody who is just sitting out there in FA.

I'm struggling to make the playoffs, but still really don't see anyone on waivers I would pick up for him.

The news the Falcons have not heard from him is concerning.  I’m holding until I hear he is not coming back.  However, I lost a lot of optimism yesterday.

He just wanted to go on a shopping spree for the rest of the year and will be back next year when he's low on funds.....jk.  I'm sure he's not in a good mental state and needs to figure it out.

I keep picturing when  Rudy Ruettiger returned to the practice field in the movie Rudy and the team stops and starts clapping .

Now replace Rudy with Ridley 😎

Still holding?

Have him stashed in the hopes that he comes back and lightning strikes weeks 16 and 17.

Feel like I'm seriously dreaming.

Even if he comes back he'll have to get into game condition. Then he'll have to be re-integrated back into the offense. Only good matchup is at home vs. DET week 16 then @BUF which is no good.

Yea I've given up hope. Guy asked for him in a trade 2 weeks back for Sony Michel and I said no. I offered the same thing to the guy today and he rejected it immediately. I think he's done for the year but I have him on the bench anyway.

Still holding but I'm almost more concerned with how bad Ryan is that I doubt Ridley would be scooped up even if he returns. One thing is for certain, this is the worst 1-2 round pick I've ever had in 35 years of playing this game.

You've been the luckiest person in fantasy football history then.

I can't remember the last year I had where 1 of my 1st 3 picks didn't miss at least 50% of the season. I'm not sure its ever happened, even on several championship teams.

look at it like an acl injury. sucks but he's out for the year. happens all the time w studs.
I'd say its more like a HAS that keeps lingering leaving you in doubt if he ever gets right. ACL is definite. You know he's done and can move on.

Really???  Sure, if the owner drops him I will scoop him up, but I think it was pretty clear he wasn't coming back very early on.
