WR Darnell Mooney, ATL (1 Viewer)

(FantasyPros) Darnell Mooney saw five targets against the Giants and had four catches for 94 yards. His day was highlighted by a 56-yard catch in the first half. Analysis: It was nice to see a little sign of life out of Mooney who post his best day by far of the season. However, with only eight receptions for 121 yards and no scores through four weeks there isn't much fantasy production for a run-first offense.
he's talented but until they start passing on a regular basis (which I don't believe they will) I can't see him having any real value.

Nice to see the targets and was looking like a huge night for him, but unfortunately I think we may have seen his ceiling (or close to it) with Fields at the helm.

I agree. Fields holds the ball too long. he should watch films of Brady 5 hours a day. got to trust your WR is going to be where they are supposed to be & cut it loose in a timely manner. I don't think he did that once last night. Also at this stage he is not very accurate. unfortunately this does not bode well for Mooney. 5th rounder in most redraft. it hurts.

It’s not just the accuracy but the sllooowww deliberate release. You need to be able to turn and fire and he doesn’t have that in his toolbox yet. Not sure he ever will…he got crushed a few times last night and I think it’s a matter of time before he gets injured.

I wouldn’t rule out him improving but he needs a QB guru to work with him in the offseason.

Seems like he’s also lost confidence, but what do I know.

I thought he was slow but had no idea...like they said in Planes, Trains "you're going to the wrong way..."

Justin Fields' 3.42 second average time to throw is .2 seconds longer than any other QB in the NFL and .36 seconds longer than his rookie season

Don't look now but Fields is starting to look like a legit NFL QB. Mooney will never be this cheap again.
Ugh. I want to believe but it's still such a low volume passing offense.
Fields may never air it out like some of the other gunslingers, but we’re not talking Mariota volume either. I think there’s improving opportunity for Mooney here.
You're right, it's been worse than Mariota volume so far, despite trailing more often. There's been a slight uptick recently, but it's still anemic as they have the highest run/pass ratio in the league by far.

This weekend they were trailing the entire game (mostly by double digits) and still only threw the ball 24 times for 156 yards and ran it 43 times. 5 targets for Mooney, which is right around his average (only once has he had more than 6 in a game).

Everything seemed to be lining up for him to be a target monster this year but for whatever reason he's had a big drop off. These next 3 weeks are extremely juicy, hopefully things pick up but it's hard to get too excited until we actually see it.

Mooney has grabbed my attention...again. I liked him last year as a WR 2/3 plug in bye week play.

Now he sits on FA. Looking to add an insurance WR from these guys:

Mooney
Toney
J Palmer (2-4 weeks rental)
R Moore
M V-S
or...gulp A Robinson

Gonna have to prioritize these guys.

Palmer seems like the obvious choice. R Moore is probably going to be volatile WR week to week but the ceiling seems pretty high. I already regret dropping him for Moore in NY. Mooney is fine if you are ok with 4-5 catches and 50 yards/game. TDs are not likely.

Assuming ppr, I have it
Rondale
Mooney
Palmer
Toney
ARob
MVS

With a huge gap between Palmer and the rest.

I get the rationale but I just don’t think Palmer is any good

Ugh, now they added Claypool.
Actually may open things up for Mooney, although I think Claypool may eventually become the go to guy.
That's the obvious positive spin, but there's still the enormous issue of so few targets to go around, especially in the red zone.
Well, that and the fact that the Bears need an NFL QB. Fields ain't it. The problem isn't the WRs, it's Fields.

Fields is never going to be a classic pocket passer but he is playing decent and may develop into a good QB that the Bears are quite happy with. His WRs are not good as a group.

This seems like a good trade all around.
  1. Claypool needed a change of scenery and probably gets a QB upgrade.
  2. CHI needed WR help.
  3. Mooney sees less pressure.
  4. Fields gets another target.
  5. PIT gets good return.
  6. Pickens to the moon.

You may be right. Someone has to catch passes from Herbert though and he is a pretty good QB.

Yeah I still don’t think we can say Claypool is clearly better than Mooney. I think could be ultimately good for Mooney but it does increase the risk Mooney isn’t ever getting the targets he needs.

I don't think Claypool is better. He's different and better than anyone else besides Mooney on the roster.

I don’t think this helps or hurts Mooney much in either direction.

ZERO.

So the problem ISN'T Fields?

Assuming Claypool gets #1 coverage, Mooney can beat #2’s all day.

Fields has improved in the last month.

Darnell Mooney caught 7-of-8 targets for 43 yards and a touchdown in Chicago's Week 9 loss to Miami.

Justin Fields needed a dime to spot Mooney in the back of the end zone and delivered on the 16-yard touchdown pass at the two-minute warning. It's a bit concerning for Mooney that his volume is getting eaten into by Chase Claypool and Cole Kmet, but the overall trend of the offense is pushing him towards fantasy value. He's probably on or close to the WR3 line against the Lions in Week 10 if only for the matchup.

Bears WR Darnell Mooney (ankle) is out for the season.

Head coach Matt Eberflus confirmed the worst on Monday when he announced that the ankle injury Mooney suffered in Week 12 would be season-ending. He added that Mooney's injury may require surgery, but didn't offer any details on how long a surgery would keep Mooney sidelined. Mooney finishes his season with a receiving line of 40-493-2 and could be in line for a contract extension heading into next offseason.

Ugh. I just traded for him. Luckily that team isn’t competing this year. Hopefully he’s 100% headed into next season.

He’ll probably be more productive as a #2 WR as Fields grows as a passer and actually passes. Just not meant to be an alpha receiver, which many surmised heading into the season.

I actually like Mooney as a forgotten man/late round WR. He should deliver WR3 roster upside for fantasy teams. Flex-worthy at least.

DJM now taking the pressure off of him should help. And I expect Fields to be better as well.

Agree. DJ Moore is actually a positive for Mooney IMO and their roles don't overlap.

Probably a better best ball player as I doubt the volume will be there but he has to potential to have a 3/80/1 type stat line.

For sure. I see him as a good depth piece for redraft/dynasty. Flex, spot starts. He could give you 1/15 for sure but also has potential for big blow up games.

Wouldn't disagree with you on that point. Probably has games where he makes season long players look silly, but now he's the de facto WR2 in Chicago drawing weaker coverage, coupled with probable upticks in passing volumes, then he certainly still will maintain decent value
