WR DeAndre Hopkins, BAL (1 Viewer)

Bumping this for input from Houston homers? Obviously they haven't had to throw much this year, but he's still putting up decent numbers. How is he looking in the offense?

I know he has more points but seems like AJ still top target with 16 vs 10 and 12 vs 7 in catches, so is Hopkins just more of the big play guy and will be more volatile?

AJ is indeed still the #1 option. Fitzpatrick trusts him and will continue to feed him. DeAndre made one guy miss on a short-medium pass and just ran untouched for his big TD in week 1. Other than that he didn't do much. Week 2, incredible throw/catch on the back shoulder on the sidelines for the TD. Fitzy put it where only DeAndre could get it.

Here's why I would be holding or even buying on Hopkins: Bill O'Brien is only keeping 4 WRs active. He's made DeVier posey inactive both weeks so far (mildly shocking to us Houston fans). The #3 and #4 WRs are Keyshawn Martin (slot guy with stone hands) and undersized Demarus Johnson, who is still learning the playbook since he was claimed from the eagles after preseason ended. He looks like he can't block or catch cleanly. Add in all 3 TEs looking like they will be more relied on for blocking or the occasional "move the sticks" catch, and this is realistically ALL Andre and DeAndre. That's it. They are the only true pass catching options right now. O'Brien wants to run, run, and run some more. But if there are any passing chances, it'll be the 2 guys above doing the catching. No need to worry about a 3rd guy emerging anytime soon.

I think that's a good take, Fly.

I'll add that last year's knock on Hopkins was making mistakes and knowing the offense, which was one of the things that gave me pause as O'brien's offense has a lot of option routes in it where the receiver has to read the coverage right.

While that was a risk that detracted from his value... if you already own him, I'd imagine as the season goes on and going into next year, his familiarity will increase. So I could see his production gradually climbing a bit as this year and next progress.

The time to buy is now. The Texans have only passed the ball 41 times through 2 weeks. They have not had to pass a ton yet. Now, they are never going to become a passing team with Fitz at the helm and want to control games. However, there is no way they continue winning in the NFL while only passing 20 times a game. Hopkins will get more targets than he has through 2 weeks, and although the TD's won't continue at a pace of 1 per game, he will catch more balls and have more yards going forward. He is a nice buy especially in dynasty.

That's what I was thinking. He only has 10 targets but that represents 25% of their passing game. Per Fly's point above, sounds like outside Hopkins & AJ the cupboard's bare.

Exactly.

Even bad QB's throw for over 3000 yards in the NFL. The Texans were awful last year but still managed to pass for 3,800 yards as a team. I don't think Fitz approaches anywhere near 4,000 yards, but some where around 3,400 is a safe bet. Hopkins was a rookie last year and managed to have 800 yards receiving.

It is not out of the question to see him have an outside shot at 1000 plus yards this year with 8-10 td's.

Aj is still the lead guy, but Hopkins is easily the 2nd best pass catching guy on the team and he is a play maker.

 
When Fitz has to throw, he's shown in the past that he's more than capable of doing it. I own both Andre and De one league and right now Hopkins is on the bench. During the byes I'll have no problems playing both though.

To me there is no question that Hopkins is a great dynasty asset. The question is rather if he can be a top WR1 or if his ceiling is more as a high WR2 or low WR1. I own him in quite many dynasty leagues but traded him this morning for Josh Gordon as I'd rather want the higher ceiling of Gordon even though it comes with more risk.

Hopkins is very young, great ball skills, decent size, seems to be catching TDs now which he did not do in his rookie year, but do you guys think he can be a top 5 WR two to five years down the road?

Hard for me to have faith, but 2 Tds in weeks 1 and 2 and tops 100 yards on 9 targets and 6 receptions while AJ has a quiet night.

I wanna believe. My hesitation isn't with Hopkins it's with fitzpatrick and that horrific Houston offense. Can it really support a Hopkins breakout? It sure seems to be rt now through 3 weeks.

This kid is playing himself into my starting lineup.

Still think of him as my WR5 (WR6, Hunter, has more upside). But so far he's outperforming Hilton/Patterson/Tate.

Fully expecting the dud game as soon as I start him.

 
He apparently could have had over 160 yards. He had a highlight reel 53 yard grab called back by penalty or something. I didn't see it but heard it was ridiculous.

The 53 yard catch was something else. One of most athletic plays I've seen for a while. Hopkins hands = :moneybag:

I don't know how anyone could top that catch. Too bad it was an illegal formation and it did not stand.

 
We'll have to see how AJs injury is. Does Deandre still have this kind of success without AJ on the other side?

The $6mm question. He is definitely talented enough to get open...but if he is constantly bracketed by opposing defenses I can't see how that will be good for his production.

I think the kid has boat loads of talent. Once AJ moves on we will get that answer. But I think he will be fine.

 
I don't understand the complete lack of buzz on what Hopkins has done so far.

He has the 1st round pedigree, so far it's a classic 2nd year breakout (currently anywhere from WR8 to WR10 in non-PPR), and yet completely under the radar.

Sure, Fitzpatrick sucks but he's not much worse than Jake Locker, and if Justin Hunter was doing this, twitter would be melting down.

What am I missing here?

 
Fitzpatrick really isn't that bad. He has 65% accuracy and is averaging 8.05 yds per attached which is 5th highest right now. He's not great by any stretch but for what they do on offense, he fits fine.

I own Hopkins and AJ and I'm starting them both this week. Tired of Crabtree's inconsistent play. Jordy, AJ, DHop and Kelvin. I like it.

 
So here's the question - going forward for this season only, who would you rather have on your roster - Andre Johnson or Hopkins? For me it's AJ, but it's getting real close.

 
Hopkins is a a very good player and has a bright future, but it is hard for anyone to be the beast that AJ was. Hopkins has WR 1 fantasy potential in his future, but I don't think he possesses that beast potential that AJ had for many years.

Hopkins' missed connection could have been classified as a third-drop drop by a harsh grader, but it wasn't a ball that had to be caught. Two targets were obviously Hopkins' fewest of the season, but he's now averaging just 5.5 looks through the Texans' first six games. That's not nearly enough to keep up as a WR2, and barely even enough to be a WR3. Hopkins will look to get more involved in a nice Week 7 matchup with the Steelers.

Um, what the hell was that? :rant:

It's not even so much the numbers (or lack thereof). It's that for a guy who's been their most consistent WR this year, he seemed utterly disconnected from the game plan. Typical play would be Hopkins split out right, Fitz takes the snap and immediately turns to his left (or vice versa). He literally wasn't even looking Hopkins' way. (Granted, it's not like Fitz typically had a lot of time to progress through his reads).

Only explanation I can think of is that the Colts put Vontae Davis on him and Houston decided to go with the better matchup of AJ vs. Toler. But I admit I wasn't tracking the game enough to see how the coverage was shaking out.

My friend and I stared at the screen in awe and after the play had concluded shared this exact same sentiment. What in the hell was that? I've never seen a player more afraid to dive at a loose ball in my life.

Terrible effort on the last play there.

Equally terrible effort by the Texans not getting Hopkins more targets. Hopkins is clipping along catching a high percentage of balls thrown his way. The problem are the targets. The Texans need to get him much more involved in the offence every week. As I stated earlier with Houston they need more balance with run and pass and need to sustain drives. No way you can consistently win not throwing the ball more than they have in today's NFL.

He has some extra time to let this stew. Now we can find out what kind of player he is. Will he turtle up under the criticism or will he blow up for 10-200-2?

It's not in a WR's mentality to run across the field and dive for the football.

Does anyone think Randy Moss would have got that fumble?
