WR DeAndre Hopkins, BAL (1 Viewer)

I agree with you about racial profiling, that it needs to be fixed.  However, the context of what Hopkins did was making a mountain out of a mole hill.  I don't see the need to protest at every turn.
And that's why structural change is hard; because those who benefit from structural inequalities find it inconvenient to address the advantages they have been granted.

It was a metaphor.
A. "You aren't the sharpest tool in the shed"  (it's a metaphor so no reason to be bothered by it). I don't mean that, just illustrating a point.

B. It is an idiom that implies the players are not mentally fit (or in this case, are morally corrupt). That's what it means. It is an insult because that's what this idiom is : an insult.

C. Going through this thread, the people that were upset were upset about someone else being upset. Who is the bigger crybaby? The person who had their boss insult them and got mad about it or the random person on the internet that heard the person got upset and then got upset about it?

Any news in this thread how this will affect his fantasy day tomorrow?  Or just a bunch or Shark Pool Trash™?

I see from your handle you must be from California, which is the land of protest about everything.  Conservative thinkers / speakers such as Ben Shapiro get protested by the far left because they want to shut down free speech.  The west coast and east coast are the reason an idiot like Trump is President.  They want to make every minority a victim, and while it is justified sometimes, not about every damn little thing that comes up, such as this ridiculous protest by Hopkins.

Also remember the dynamics of football. Coaches and management preach "we are a team. We are brothers in arms, etc." Then when members of the team come forward with something important to them, the owner insults them and implies they are stupid/crazy/unfit. That really undermines the entire "team" message.

We aren't in the meetings, locker room, etc. We haven't met McNair. We don't know what those relationships are so it is unfair to make such a confident judgements about what is or isn't ridiculous. Being upset that someone they don't even know got mad because their boss insulted them is bizarre to me.

Anyway, Ive said my peace here and hope we will be less likely to rush to judgement on issues that don't involve us. I know it's something we all can improve on.

I didn't hear about an insult.   Did I miss something?

I don't look at black people as you described

The vast majority of us don’t. It requires sweeping generalities and being able to jump to a conclusion on the merest wisp of something to be able to support their agenda.  It’s a weak position and about as simplistic an argument as there is.  It keeps the discussion superficial and well out of drilling down to discuss actual causal factors and meaningful debate about impactful solutions.

I see you didn't answer the question.

The answer is, every single urban black kid in America has experienced racial profiling. Walking down the street, walking into a store, driving a car. Many have been stopped by police on specious pretexts. All of them have friends or family who have been treated roughly by police. Their fears about being profiled as criminals for no reason other than their skin color are real. It's a structural problem in our society. It's not something they "need to get over"; it's something we need to fix.
Exactly this.

GUys, stop slapfighting. Hopkins is playing until an update comes in that he isn't. Otherwise, all this can be posted elsewhere.

I keep panicking seeing this bumped and thinking he's sitting out or been suspended.

Short of some outstanding replies by Calbear...

it's still a baseless topic. He called all the players inmates, not just african american ones. It's really not a race issue. That's a leap people are taking.

I've heard this phrase a ton of times in my life and AFAIK it's been said for a llllong time. It's probable that millions have heard it and possible billions have. Today is not the day to get upset with it. An owner that donates tons to charity, helps his players to do so in a manner that protects them from "sharks", and just got done helping millions in a hurricane is not the target of disgust.
It's not about race but- Racist people are not racist one day and not the next. There are way better "targets" if you have a bone to pick here and want one.

We must offer people oopses in this era of instant social media.

Two weeks ago, Rishard Matthews was saying he'd quit if forced to stand for the anthem. That hits every news organization. The next day he apologizes. That is published all over. Then it's DONE.

McNair should be owed that opportunity too. I know none of you have ever said something you regret and are all perfect so maybe it's hard to understand, but when a man realizes what he says and apologizes both publicly and face to face, that should be acceptable.

I have more issue with Troy Vincent shaking his hand, accepting his apology, and then running to the press. That makes me think he's less of a man.

Not in this world. Some people decide they don't want to forgive certain things. Doesn't matter to them if the person apologizes for how they said something. Their past good deeds don't matter to some. Just waiting for the next reason to be outraged.

Looks like that day off didn't hurt too much.  Maybe a few of the defensive players should find something to be offended about as well.

I've never heard it with "inmates" but even if that part of it isn't an expression a mix-up of the expression still isn't a big deal.  What I don't get, and what I've brought up several times but NO ONE is willing to comment on, is why McNair's defense is not merely that, but is instead this absurd lie that he was talking about somebody else, not the players.  A defense that he continues to double and triple down on even as it takes him days to figure out who he was going to say he was talking about if not the players.

All he had to say is "hey I thought it was just a commonly used expression, I didn't realize it would offend some people and I'm sorry about that".  By trying to transparently redirect the comment at other people it signals an admission that you think the comment was bad, which it shouldn't have been.

He saw 16 targets on Sunday which lead all WRs on the week. 11 of those targets came from Watson and Hopkins ended up commanding a 43% market share when all was said and done.

It looks like all three TEs along with Ellington are going to miss TNF this week.

My question is, how bad is HOU's defense? Did Watt's dislocated finger have something to do with their performance vs. JAC? Are we once again looking at a perfect storm of volume for Hopkins?
My face watching Hopkins crack 200 yards.

"“I never meant to offend anyone, and I was not referring to our players,” McNair said in a statement on Friday. “I used a figure of speech that was never intended to be taken literally. I would never characterize our players or our league that way, and I apologize to anyone who was offended by it.”"

DeAndre Hopkins caught 7-of-10 targets for 125 yards in the Texans' Week 12 loss to the Ravens on Monday night.

He was the lone offensive bright spot for Houston, doing his normal thing and making insane catches in extraordinarily difficult circumstances. Even when Hopkins is covered, he really isn't; nobody wins with more will power and strong handedness. Defenders continue to penalize Hopkins, and he still makes great grabs, and even Tom Savage at quarterback isn't hurting his production. Hopkins will remain an elite WR1 play next week in a road date against the Titans.

As a Texans fan and someone who is vsing Hopkins this week he needs a 1 game suspension.
I don't know that that is proof but it is very odd. If you watch the game again, he does it a zillion times. He looks at his gloves after for a sec. It may be far fetched but it's also hmmm

I’ve never seen a more QB-proof WR.

Watson gets hurt? No problem, Savage get him the rock. Savage goes down? No problem, Tyler Yates gets him the rock. If Yates goes down? Petty sure the ball boy or the dude who sets up the screen for the kicker could get him the rock.

granted, that was against the Niners god awful undersized secondary/bad pass rush & Yates should struggle against better defenses; but Hopkins is the truth.

This guy has to be a 1st rounder next year in fantasy drafts. It seems he never is due to QB play and turns out to be a steal. Pick him ahead of Mike Evans, Jordy Nelson, Micheal Thomas, Brandin Cooks, Doug Baldwin, Dez Bryant, Tyreek Hill.

Those are all the WRs who went ahead of him before I nabbed him in the 2nd round of a 16-teamer, 25th pick overall (WR12).

I got him in the fourth round, 41st overall.  I didn't really want him but at that value I couldn't pass him up.  He's been carrying my team.

I didn’t have him but I was impressed with what he could do given the lack of talent at QB.
Last year, his floor and ceiling was basically 5 for 50.  That's not what you hope for from a first round pick.  He was a bust.  He had little to work with at QB but it also looked like he was just slightly off as well.

He wasn't a 1st round pick in my league. I think he went early second? Players like that are what make for a bounce-back value.

I wanted him this year but missed by 2 picks.

Last year's issues seemed to be more to do with terrible OL play, and Lamar Miller being something of a bust for the Texans - they wanted to establish the run and instead couldn't sustain drives.

I would caution for next year that Hopkins may be a bit over-drafted again - he's undoubtedly going to go in the 1st round. And the Texans D will be vastly improved. A lot of the reason Hopkins is going nuts this year is a makeshift injured defense that can't stop anyone. Could anyone seriously imagine last year's Texans D/ST allowing JimmyG & the talentless Niners offense passing for 300+ on them? Or Hyde going off on the ground?

The 2017 Texans find themselves in shootouts, and Hopkins has had an obscene number of targets as a result. I cannot imaging that being sustainable, especially when the Texans rebuild their defense - a consistent staple of this franchise.

DeAndre Hopkins (toe) didn't practice on Thursday.

Hopkins wasn't listed on Wednesday's practice report, so this must be a new injury. It's too early to get a gauge on Hopkins' status, but if he were to sit against the Jaguars, it would make a brutal matchup even worse for fill-in quarterback T.J. Yates. Nuk leads the NFL with 11 touchdowns this year and ranks second in both catches (88) and receiving yards (1,233) behind Antonio Brown. His absence would be a big loss for fantasy owners. From the Houston Chronicle an hour ago:

Texans Pro Bowl wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins didn't practice Thursday due to a toe injury as he was added to the injury report.

Hopkins leads the NFL with 11 touchdown catches and leads the Texans with 88 catches for 1,233 yards.

At this point, the injury isn't expected to sideline him for a Sunday road game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
