That was my first thought.
Ravens gave Carolina a 5th rd pick in 2025, Panthers gave up a 6th plus Johnson and paid his salary and if Johnson signs with someone else in the offseason Ravens get a comp pick, likely a 5th. So a wash for Ravens with a comp pick. Worth it for the quitter.
I think he has to sign for more then $5m a year for the Ravens to get a 6th. Believe it was generally assumed that would happen when they made the trade. Probably not so assumed any longer but I would understand if the Ravens decided they'd rather hold and find out.
I was actually thinking of this question with the 49'ers and Campbell and I don't think there is much of a shot at all he can get back a comp pick so I tend to think a variety of other things could be at play when teams do this ranging from "keep away", mentality of "if you don't help me, you help no one", not wanting to have the player potentially flourish and make you look bad or worse flourish against you, etc,etc. Just hanging onto any remote competitive advantage or not taking smallest chance of something coming back on you making you look bad at your job.

The comp pick is a reason the Ravens just don’t cut Johnson but also like was mentioned previously, they don’t want another team to pick him up. I would think if they did cut Johnson, the Chiefs, Bills or Steelers would take a shot on him. No way the Ravens would risk that. The Chiefs have shown numerous times that they would make a deal with the devil if it increases their chances to win.

That is my thought as well - play keep away, which is probably why they grabbed him in the first place . I’m sure they saw what happened to castaway Mecole Hardman last year and don’t want to see Diontae do nothing at all with the Chiefs until he winds up catching a Super Bowl winning pass from Mahomes.

I was totally wrong, thought no way the Ravens would let him get picked up by a contending team.
None of this is surprising, really biggest surprise if that they did not do it a few weeks ago.
Not going to say it for sure, could even get claimed on waivers, but I do think there is a chance he's done for good. Maybe by his own choice, the money and role he's now looking at might just make him deem it to not be worth his while.

The Ravens - rightly or wrongly - think they have the team culture to pretty much fit any player into. It didn't work with Earl Thomas (who was crazy). But OBJ - who doesn't have a tiny ego - fit in perfectly last season.
Things appear to have gone south with Marcus Williams - who carries the 3rd largest cap hit on the team - this season. That one could get uglier before it's over.
The only recent departure I can recall who publicly bad-mouthed the organization was Matt Judon. And that was because the Ravens wouldn't pay him. He conveniently forgot that he probably wouldn't have been drafted if Baltimore didn't take him and coach him into being a rich young man.
Diontae Johnson didn't work out. I doubt we'll ever find out everything that happened with him because Baltimore is about as tight-lipped as an organization can be and when they do say something, they are usually lying. It was a low-cost risk, though I was surprised they didn't use him more as a returner.
It's not unusual but it's usually backup DT's or 3rd string LBer types. Have to remember they barely paid anything for him. May end up being something like a 10-15 spot swap in the late rounds.
I interpreted it to mean outside of the locker room he is a not a bad guy, no trouble with the law that I am aware of, etc.
As a teammate he is selfish. Wants targets, takes plays off, pouts. Not a team player.

Meaning bring him in get a feel and ANY sniff of cancer don't take it further but if not make it clear this is your last change and if you F it up, your *** is gone and getting cut again pretty much solidifies you'll never get a job in the NFL again.

You can only get away with that if you’re elite. He clearly isn’t.
I think he gets another chance but that will be it. I’m holding in dynasty until cut down next season. Probably.
Not to be to soon but I thought the Texans made sense as the team to trade for him after they lost Diggs and that is especially so now.
But saying that I'm not really sure how much help a WR joining a team in week 17 can provide. And they might just not want anything to do with him, just easily makes the most sense if we are trying to predict what, if any, contending teams would pick him up.

If he makes it past the Texans in the waiver process after Dell’s injury, I will be surprised but it would clearly show how much he has turned into a locker room poison in a short time. With the Steelers there were stories, but still other teams wanted him, and traded for him. They had to be aware of his antics but still allowed him in their locker rooms.

I posted upthread this made the most sense and really did to me even before they lost Tank. Thought he made a lot of sense as Diggs replacement.

I really believe the player that might benefit the most from the Tank injury at least this upcoming week against Baltimore is Schultz, not as much for Nico and Diontae. The Ravens have a tendency to struggle a bit against TE's so Schultz could have a decent day on Christmas against the Ravens.

He was claimed off waivers, he didn't have a choice on where he ended up.
Chargers were the other team who put in a claim for him.
I don't know that he'll see the field much, or at all, against the Ravens with how little time there is. Assuming he doesn't refuse to suit up here as well.
If he wanted revenge, he might be more likely to get it by sharing info about their playbook, calls, etc. Though, was he even there long enough to pick up that much?

For the Chargers to also put in a claim, maybe Diontae Johnson isn’t the locker room cancer that the general public mostly is thinking. No way Jim Harbaugh allows the Chargers to put in a claim for Johnson without talking to his brother about him. It almost looks like the one brother was trying to do the other brother a favor but the Tank Dell injury messed that up.
Interesting comment but I dunno, they're both in the same conference I doubt they'd want to help each other out.

I find the "they probably talked" as the thought-provoking part.
He's definitely a step up from Bobby Trees and Xavier Hutchinson, if he plays. I'm just not necessarily expecting much from him after what happened in Baltimore. Though as a Texans fan, can hope he can contribute something in the playoffs.
