but it strikes me that the root problem here is Zach Wilson can't play without training wheels.
I find this to be wildly inaccurate. Zach Wilson is a capable young QB.
The Jets seem to play a “keep running until they stop us” style of football - and it’s working.
A lot of good teams have followed this formula, and a lot of bad teams should be trying to emulate it. See: AZ on TNF where they almost let the Saints back into the game because they kept throwing all willynilly instead of trying to kill any clock. Without 2x pick-6’s I’m not sure they win that game at all, and considering the Saints had no starting secondary after Roby went down, that’s a sad statement.
Hell, the 85 Bears & the 2001 Ravens each won Super Bowls this way. And IMO Zach Wilson is potentially a better QB than either Jim MacMahon or Trent Dilfer. He certainly has more upside than either, given his mobility, instincts and arm strength.
This is a dude in his 2nd year, when his 1st was marred by COVID absences, no preseason, and the untimely passing of Greg Roman, who was brought in specifically to develop him. This year he had the knee sprain that cost him the 1st month of the season.
I’d say given the circumstances, the Jets are very smart to limit Wilson early on. I expect things to open up when 1. Wilson is a bit more seasoned, and 2. When opponents actually do manage to stop their run game.
And as
@Dr. Octopus points out, the Miami game sure looked like a training wheel-less Wilson to me, but I’m just a dude watching football, not a big fancy FF expert.
I’d say the Jets are way ahead of schedule. And I’m happy to see it.
