WR Jameson Williams, DET (4 Viewers)

Jamo worked out at Allen Park today.

I **** you not, topic of discussion amongst Lions fans on Reddit and Twitter was Jamo went to his worksite.

(yes of course I know they're voluntary but the pitchforks were out en masse after Vegas Trip Instastorygate)

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Detroit target a veteran WR in a draft day trade
Aiyuk
This makes good sense as the Niners lack draft picks and I doubt they plan on resigning Aiyuk after locking up Deebo and having Kittle on the books for big money. Of course would the the Lions be willing to resign him and what would Aiyuk be looking for would both be factors as well. I like Aiyuk a lot and think he has been underrated while hiding in that offense. I worry Jameson may be one that “never quite gets it” so we definitely need to make some type of move to add an outside weapon.

if we've thought about it, I figure Brad Holmes is mulling over an order of magnitude of permutations of this.

Draft, pre-camp signing, minor trade - they lost 30% of the signed receiving corps for the first third of the season due to gambling violations, they'll do something to address it.

Doesn't have to be a DHop level move but that have to have contingency plans just in case this turns into Kaderius Toney. Who, it's worth noting, made a couple massive plays in the Super Bowl as a reclamation project. He'll undoubtably be a playmaker at some point, I'm just questioning it will ever be a high volumes. Takes a lot more than talent to be a consistent producer.

Maybe he never becomes (as an example, not a comp) Olave-type production wise in 2023, they're going to give Jamo every opportunity. This year, and barring any more self-induced implosions, next year. He has zero GTD money, they could even claw back $824K of signing bonus this year (hopefully not, that would be alienating.) They can walk away from Jamo without a significant Cap Hit. But hopefully be balls out and the Lions don't have to make too many moves.

I have zero concerns with Jamo. He is a good kid and easily a top 5 WR talent. The kid has elite skill levels.
He did not beat some girl. He did not take illegal drugs. This is social media over-reaction #10 against him.

Yeah. What he's done is copied the behaviour of multi-year veterans and been punished for something that had essentially been normalised in the building. Obviously you are responsible for your own actions and punished accordingly, but he certainly wouldn't be the first employee to imbibe a workplace culture that leads a person down the wrong path. I doubt he even realised what he was doing was wrong. I'd guess the same is true of the people he was imitating, and probably the guys who those guys were imitating as well.

Got spooked by this character/mentality stuff. Got a taker at 1.11 in ppr 1QB. Was really excited about him, part of me hopes he proves me wrong.
How you feeling about that 1.11 now ? I would much rather have Jameson myself.

I would probably take the trade back if I could. But disclaimer, my league is RB crazy. 11 is around where the WR1 or WR2 on my draft list usually goes. So I could use the pick for either someone like Addison or Johnston, or possibly even Smith-Njigba, or else something like RB6-10 on my draft list. Just based on averages, nothing specific.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell said WR Jameson Williams is "miles ahead" of where he was during the 2022 offseason.

Campbell highlight Williams' route running improvements this offseason. Last spring, the speedy wideout was recovering from an ACL injury he suffered in the National Championship game -- his final at Alabama before being taken with the 12th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Active for six games last season, Williams caught one of nine targets for 41 yards and a touchdown. He'll miss the regular season's first six games this year while serving a suspension for violating the NFL's gambling policy. If Williams' ADP falls, he could be a savvy draft pick for fantasy managers willing to wait for the electric receiver to return to the Detroit lineup.

My league's Lions fan offered me Waddle for Jameson + 1.7

Non-ppr
Easy accept. Current Waddle is Jameson's ceiling, and it isn't Waddle's ceiling. The 1.7 isn't anywhere near high enough to bridge the difference.

Jamo's raw talent exceeds anyone's in the league. His limit is Goff's ability to get him the ball. Jamo has the elusiveness of Tyrek Hill, but with even a tad more speed. Jamo's ceiling is the best in the league.

Sigh, this is the world we live in. I mean, he's just a kid. I'm sure Campbell had a talk with him about it. Probably something like spending more time focusing on the upcoming season and being more professional. The same thing that's being told to all the rook's. I was getting iratated just istening to the sme old stupid questions. But it's that time of year and there's a million journalists that have to write about something.

I'm sure Campbell had a talk with him about it.

Word is he heard a ton of **** from veterans on the team as well. But ya gotta get past it and move on, nothing's gonna change. From all the evidence we have he's putting in work.

He came across well in his latest media appearance. Takes responsibility, doesn't give details (it's pointless to give specifics, just leave himself open for even more criticism.) Just trying to move past it. He's young, probably immature, maybe doesn't have the best crew outside the facility....whatever, I don't think he's a bad dude.

Just kind of a goofy kid who probably had a lot of weird **** happening when he was growing up, but I don't think he's bad news. Long as he loves ball and hits his potential nobody cares.

He's already lost money so that at minimum should be enough motivation to keep his head on straight. I like that the veteran really giving him an earful. I think he is going to be special player so I hope he achieves his dream and also a human being stays out of trouble.

LionsWire OTA report:

The chemistry experiment between quarterback Jared Goff and wide receiver Jameson Williams continues to show it needs more time and cohesion. They continue to not be on the same page on when and where Williams is supposed to be on routes. It led to one rep where Goff threw up his hands in disgust.

How that rep played out is one reason why there’s still an abundance of hope. Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson ran out to Williams and explained to the second-year wideout where he erred. Williams then went to Goff, and the two had a discussion. To call it animated is overselling it, but Goff was pretty pointedly showing and explaining to Williams where he wanted him to be on that post route. The two walked together to the other field for the team drills, still talking and working it out.

It wasn’t the only miscue from Williams on the day. I didn’t note any drops, unlike last week’s OTA, but he continues to show he needs more work on his timing and releases on inside-breaking routes. It’s June 1st; far from time to panic. That’s important to remember. But it would be nice if Williams showed some tangible progress into next week’s mandatory minicamp.

Nothing I have seen or heard about Jameson screams “Lion”. He really doesn’t seem like he fits this culture and at this point I am surprised Holmes/Campbell traded up to get him. Hopefully he starts to mature and puts the work in so he can become somewhat of a factor this season.

I see nothing wrong with him. He is in camp, taking instruction and growing. While the gambling suspension is very disappointing, the other stuff there is way too much stuff being read into. Jamo is a good kid who works hard and is obscenely talented.

Three Lions staff members and four other Liond players got messed up in this rule. Something went amsit.

It's the beginning of his first minicamp. These are the things you work on.

And his first game that counts is a week before Halloween. Lotta time and he will have the full preseason for live action.

voluntaryOTAs (mandatory Minicamp is next week) but absolutely. Jeff Risdon is a goof, I wouldn't put him in my top ten trusty beat writers. Same sequence was covered with a brief description with no conjecture by other beats.

The part I liked is Ben Johnson got involved and made sure everyone was on the same page. Correctable error. The whole point of non-contact OTAs and Minicamp is to install the offense/defense so everyone is ready to go when TC opens.

Ja'Marr Chase can't catch footballs. A real shame. Was a really exciting prospect, but just couldn't catch footballs. Sad way to end his career during his rookie preseason, but that's life I guess ...

Treylon Burkes has asthma that didn't affect him through high school and college, but it's something he can't manage in the NFL.

We're all trying to predict the future. The facts are that Jameson was a highly touted player drafted with a top 10 pick coming off of a major injury. He played in 6 games and caught one ball while his team was squarely in the playoff hunt and in need of play makers. He's since been suspended 6 games for gambling which seems to be a pretty clear no-no for NFL players.

I see that and see a player that has lost significant value. You must not.

Oh, I do see it that way. That's why I sold him for the #11 pick after the suspension and social media high-roller acting video. The signs were starting to add up before this blurb ever came out. They're not huge red flags, but some "yellow flags" or whatever. So yes, overall I'd be treading cautiously with the guy, but this route-running deal is the kind of thing that, two years from today, could be looked at as a sign of what was to come, or a total joke.

To anyone concerned about Jameson, I'm with you. To anyone panicking, I point to stuff like the "Ja'Marr chase drops".

It's the same every year. Like I sain in an earlier post. There are way too many journalists who want to make a name for themselves with trifle information instead of writing something tangible. I'm not saying it's easy but jeez. This is just silly.

Slow news season. None of these reporters want to be cut down to part time.

I guess you missed the part where the coaching staff clearly stated they were going to be very cautious with him and only play him with limited snaps. We don't know what his value is until he starts playing full-time.

But EVERYTHING you're saying is because of how they chose to ease him back in.

IIRC, the talk was he would run limited routes, but they weren't going to lean on him. They were taking the long term approach with him. You're saying "They were in the playoff race, and he couldn't help." The Lions were saying "We're thinking long term with him."

He got 9 targets, some of them were quite bad. Earlier in the thread--probably several pages back at this point--someone else posted some clips of the throws that missed him.

Veterans coming back from ACL injuries get the benefit of "They're not all the way back the 1st year."
The kid who never played NFL football coming off an ACL is already labeled a bust when the team intentionally limited his use?

He got the ball in his hands twice, and both of those touches went for 40 yards.

He may be a bust. But I'm honestly not taking that much concern out of his 1st year.
