WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba, SEA (1 Viewer)

So is he still the clear top WR for rookie drafts?
Yes though if you weren’t totally sold on him predraft, the landing spots might be enough for you to slightly shift rankings.
Just curious who you think could be shifted? I feel like the top 4 are all in a similar (pretty good) type landing spot boat- mostly positive, but they all have a few negatives as well.
Q and Addison. If you were on the fence between their ranking with JSN, I could see draft capital and the landing spot being enough to reorder them. I personally prefer JSN.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba said in a recent interview that he knows he’s going to “dominate” in the NFL. Njigba said that there’s “no ceiling” for his game and that he’s not just a “slot” guy. However, Seahawks HC Pete Carroll said in a recent interview that he’s going to “count on” Njigba playing the inside or slot role. Geno Smith got himself a WEAPON

Seahawks signed No. 20 overall pick Jaxon Smith-Njigba to a four-year contract with a fifth-year option.

Smith-Njigba figures to be a big part of Seattle's offense from the jump, boosting Geno Smith's fantasy value and probably eating into targets for DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett to some extent. He's had the highest rookie wideout ADP so far in best-ball drafts based on his strong prospect profile and will likely push the Seahawks to more 11-personnel sets right away.

SKULL SESSION: SCIENCE CLAIMS OHIO STATE WILL WIN A TITLE IN 2023, JSN IS “THE PERFECT FIT” FOR THE SEATTLE SEAHAWKS AND C.J. STROUD CALLS SNOOP DOGG “UNC”

Excerpt:

JSN & SEATTLE, THE PERFECT FIT. When NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced the Seahawks were on the clock with the No. 20 overall pick at the 2023 NFL draft, Seattle GM John Schneider was beside himself. Jaxon Smith-Njigba, the player he had wanted since the NFL Combine and Ohio State's pro day, was still on the board.

I wasn't there (obviously), but I imagine Schneider turned to Pete Carroll to receive words of affirmation from his coach, whatever could be deciphered through Carroll's lip-smacking as he chewed on some Orginal Bubble Yum. He then picked up the office phone and called in the pick. And with that, Smith-Njigba was headed to the Pacific Northwest.

According to Michael-Shawn Dugar, a Seahawks beat reporter for The Athletic, JSN was the “perfect fit“ for the Seahawks, who wanted a receiver that could divert a defense's attention away from fellow pass-catchers DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett and make life easier on quarterback Geno Smith, the 2023 NFL Comeback Player of the Year.

From Dugar's article:

They wanted a slot receiver who understood zone coverage and how to feel underneath defenders and make himself available to the quarterback. They needed someone who was more quick than fast, but at the same time, crafty and explosive with the ball in his hands. Against man coverage, their preferred receiver needed to be proficient at the line of scrimmage and have a wide catch radius. He must also be a dependable blocker in the run game, which is still a key piece of the team’s identity.
Basically, the Seahawks were looking for Smith-Njigba.
Smith-Njigba is the perfect fit for Seattle’s offense. Which is why drafting him with the 20th pick — the highest Carroll and Schneider have ever taken a receiver in 14 drafts — was such a no-brainer. As its pick approached, Seattle did the leg work to be prepared to trade back if necessary, but those conversations ended when Smith-Njigba was still available.
“It was an easy decision just because he’s plug-and-play,” Schneider said on Seattle Sports radio after the draft. “With our situation, it totally made sense.”
In 2022, Seattle used 11 personnel on 52.8% of its plays, which ranked as the team's most popular offensive player grouping, Dugar reported via stats from TruMedia. That means Smith-Njigba should see a lot of playing time in his first season with the franchise – one that reached the NFL Wild Card at 9-8 before its eventual loss to the New York Giants last year.

Add to that offense Smith-Njigba, who compared himself to the Rams' Cooper Kupp and the Bills' Stefon Diggs during his Seattle Sports radio interview, and the team's potential to contend with the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC West and make some noise in the postseason only increases.

When one of the hosts closed the interview by asking whether he should draft Smith-Njigba on his fantasy football team, he replied, in part, “You want to win, right?” Smith-Njigba’s attitude and demeanor contribute to him being such a perfect piece to complement Lockett and Metcalf.
“Those guys can do it all, but you just add another weapon that can do it all, I think it’s going to be dangerous,” Smith-Njigba said. “Geno back there slinging it, the potential is crazy. The potential is crazy, and I love playing with great players. I’m blessed to be a Seahawk, and I’m blessed to play in that stadium in front of those fans. We’re gonna light it up for sure.”
Could an NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year season be #Loading... for JSN?

Seahawks Observations: Salk’s takeaways from rookie minicamp

Excerpt:

Neither of the two first-round picks (Devon Witherspoonand Jaxon Smith-Njigba) participated in the 7-on-7 portions of practice, but it was fun watching Smith-Njigba run routes against token defense. Of course he was always open, but I think the quarterbacks threw it his way 90% of the time. Who can blame them! If I was trying to get noticed, I’d throw it to him every time, also!

Smith-Njigba doesn’t look too big, but super athletic and with a great football IQ.

ESPN's Matt Miller Explains Why He Loves The Seahawks 2023 Draft

Excerpt:

Miller gave some lofty comparisons for Ohio State alum Jaxon Smith-Njigba, as he looks to help Seattle’s receiving group.

"Like a Cooper Kupp," said Miller. "Like a Justin Jefferson, there's some versatility to be an inside-outside receiver. He's the future at that position for Seattle, in my opinion.
On Wednesday, Miller released his Top-100 rankings for draft picks based on team fit, scheme fit and need to name a few key factors. Smith-Njigba comes in at No.1 on the list as the most-valuable pick in the draft per Miller, while the Witherspoon pick ranked fifth, with the selections of Mike Morris and Anthony Bradford also cracking Miller's top 100.
Here's what Miller had to say about why the selection of Smith-Njigba topped his list:
My pre-draft ranking: No. 5
The Seahawks grabbed my No. 5 overall player and WR1 at pick No. 20, one of the best values of the first round. On top of that, JSN is an ideal fit in the slot -- where he dominated at Ohio State -- and can complement DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett in what could be a very good offense this season. I also think Smith-Njigba will seamlessly slide into the WR2 role down the road, once Lockett is no longer there.

The concept of JSN working from the opposite side to the boot side makes perfect sense and JSN did this a lot in the mesh concepts OSU ran. His "yac" after the catch in these concepts could be very good in Seattle and was very good at OSU. You can play so much off of this like a deep-over concept to DK or Lockett. Pair this with their running game and Seattle's offense could be a huge headache for defenses to match up with.

Seahawks Jaxon Smith-Njigba: Geno Reveals Rookie Scouting Report

Excerpt:

So, what are Smith's initial thoughts on his newest weapon?

"He's so impressive," Smith said. "Very smooth route runner. Natural hands. Also, the game is not too big for him. You can see he's got that self-confidence that you look for. He's learning; he's picking up his assignments like all the other rookies and new guys. Jaxon's been tremendous so far, and I'm looking forward to seeing him grow."

Not to derail this thread but where do you have Geno ranked at?

Rankings are tough year to year with all the changes in personnel across the QB landscape but I think he has to be in the 9 to 15 range window and I think I would put Geno ahead of Danny Dimes. Geno's ceiling has to go up with all the weapons he has at his disposal.

Thanks for your reply. It's funny but it seems like alot of ff fans are not that high on him. We'll see. He could be a sneaky play this year. Okay, back to Jaxon....

Happily grabbed him at 1.04 in a dynasty league with big-play scoring. The RBs had gone 1-2 and someone moved up to get Richardson at 1.03. I jumped at the chance to move to 4 from 7 to get him. Didn't cost a whole heck of a lot so happy with the move/pick.

Similarly, the two rbs went 1-2 in my 1qb 12 team rookie draft. I had a plethora of seconds built up over the next three drafts and once Gibbs was picked, 1.3 dealt the
Pick to me for 6 seconds (two each of 23 24 25). Picked JSN with a smile

Six dimes for a dollar. Well done.

I feel like JSN is the best WR in the class but it's hard to get too excited about this class for redraft.

Our league is 12 x 18 so I'll take a couple swings at rookies over the last 6 rounds. Looks like, at least for now, if I want Addison (best situation) or JSN, will have to take them around the 10th or 11th round - higher if they show out in PS. Hard to justify given the WRs coming off the board around then.

I don't do dynasty but if I did JSN would def be my #1 priority amongst WR/TEs in this class after the top RBs come off the board.

#Seahawks Senior Director of Player Personnel, Matt Berry, on Rookie WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba: "You're comparing his change of direction to Doug Baldwin, when you're looking at the short shuttle and stuff ... He reminded all of us how talented he was. And then he built on it at the pro day. And he ran when people didn't think he should run. That just speaks to the type of makeup and the type of competitor and wanting to prove himself and how special a prospect, an individual he actually is …"

It’s hype season for sure. But this hype feels like there’s some legit meat behind it.
JSN was talked up as being better than Wilson and Olave earlier this off-season but landing in the what seems to be a crowded WR depth chart it’s like the guy no longer exists in fantasy circles. People can be very shortsighted.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba is reportedly already treated like a “veteran” with the Seahawks.Seahawks WR Tyler Lockett sees Njigba being “phenomenal” with the “sky” being the limit.
Ohio State WR’s coach even ranked Njigba as the 2nd best WR he’s coached as a Buckeye.
Above Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave, and Terry McLaurin.
In terms of Njigba’s hamstring, he says he’s “all ready to go” heading into training camp.
It seems that the Seahawks got away with another STUD in their rookie WR

Jaxon Smith-Njigba is reportedly viewed as the “next” Doug Baldwin by former Seahawks star KJ Wright.
Wright also said Njigba will be the next Seahawks “great” WR and could be on the “same level” as Steve Largent.
Geno Smith said recently his connection with Njigba is already “really good” so far.Pete Carroll also said Njigba has already been tested “all around” the offense and plans on playing that role in the season.
Njigba, Metcalf, and Lockett is going to be a DEADLY trio

Do we know who coach says is the best WR he's ever coached?

Was offered JSN, Garrett Wilson and 1st for Kelce, Love, Kamara and James Conner in Superflex. Wondering if the hype is real…

Why have you not already accepted that?
Moving Kamara and Conner leaves me with no RBs but long term it was the move
If you truly have no startable RBs, then this trade might have put you in full on rebuild. I’d sell off any other Win Now vets who hold value and play for next year.

.....but what if it were 6 mercury dimes?
I still prefer the Carson City Morgan. Chances of landing a 16D in the second are slim.
