WR Jayden Higgins, HOU (1 Viewer)

Ugh, he could NOT have been put in a more crowded WR room after the Noel pick too.

I'll love it for real football, but for fantasy, this butchered both guys, but STILL my WR2 in tis draft class

I'm not seeing a crowded WR room for Houston. Last year was a crowded rehab room. Nico has yet to play a full season or start more than 12 games. Tank, who knows. Diggs injured then gone. Hou was getting pretty desperate for bodies to line up wide last year. They needed to go WR heavy in this draft imo.

CJ can't throw to these guys if he's not upright
100% this. I'll throw it in the Higgins thread but really it applies to everyone on this team not named Nico.... I would not feel warm and fuzzy about this line. There was a point in the 2000s where I kept saying as a Steelers fan "well, it's not like our line could get worse". Spoiler alert, it could and it did. It was their number one draft need coming in, and with their 9 picks they took ONE, an OT, who Zierline graded out as "will eventually become an average starter". And this is after trading away their only highly graded lineman of the bunch Tunsil.

I'm avoiding this entire team in redraft. And again, outside Nico who should be able to survive on talent and a high target share, I wouldn't feel great about any of these guys doing much in dynasty for at least a year or two. It feels like their gameplan will be to have a top 6 defense again, control the clock, and keep games close and low scoring.

Cross posting from Texans thread

Clint Stoerner was talking about what he saw in mini camp, and he said Jaylin Noel was the receiver who was running routes that he thought would allow him to most immediately contribute in the NFL.

Also he apparently didn't have concerns about CJ's shoulder, though I didn't hear that segment, just heard the hosts refer to it later.
oh wow link or source? Would love to see here more on noel

I believe he was listening to Stoerner's radio show here in Houston
Yes it was local radio. Stoerner was on the morning show (Payne and Pendergast) as a guest though.

https://www.audacy.com/stations/spo...c/episodes/2aeec96e451e/chapters/5408d2ce1b13 (can't seem to link directly to it, so click on the link and then click on the Clint Stoerner talks OTAs link).

9:13:30 is where they start discussing the WRs. 9:16:40 is where he goes into Noel, but listen to the first part as well as Stoerner goes over Higgins fully first and where he thinks he may have work to do.

Suppose I should go post this in their player threads.

Jayden Higgins putting on a show early in 7 on 7:One handed catch for 30+ down sideline from Stroud inside five-yard-line.Followed by Mills hitting him on slant across middle for 15+ with LOTS of green in front of him.

C.J. Stroud threw a go ball to Jayden Higgins, who was covered tightly by Kamari Lassiter, but Higgins hauled it in with one hand . Perfect pass.Yeah, Higgins might end up being the truth.

Thanks, tossed out some lowball offers based on this news and was able to add Higgins in two leagues from apparently panicky owners.

WR depth among five things we learned from Texans minicamp

Excerpt:

Rookie WR

After trading out of the first round, the Texans took Higgins with the second pick in Round 2 of April's draft -- he also became the first second-round pick to ever get a fully-guaranteed rookie contract.
So far, the No. 34 overall pick out of Iowa State has impressed. He's 6-foot-4 but moves extremely well for someone his size. Higgins' lateral movement allows him to separate, and he's already connected with Stroud for big gains. On Day 1 of minicamp, he made a one-handed catch with cornerback Kamari Lassiter in coverage draped all over him for a touchdown.

Ryans has been impressed with what he's seen from Higgins.

"It's been really exciting to see Jayden's growth process in the short amount of time that he's been here," Ryans said. "I've seen a guy who's steadily got better every single week. You've seen him make even more plays. Seeing him today, this is the most plays that he's made. In our last week of camp, to see a rookie who's come in and showing right now that he could be an impact player for us, I think it means a lot."

They are 2 different guys playing 2 different positions, are they not?

My understanding is that it's a Collins/Higgins outside, Kirk/Noel slot , add Dyami Brown as the field stretcher 3rd WR as needed , and the new OC feeds the slot enough to be fantasy-relevant.

The big WR question I'm following is the Kirk/Noel one. I don't think Noel beats out Kirk, but if he's enough to share a lot reps, it makes them both worthless.

24-rd BB, I took both (Kirk/Noel).

Short-Roster BB I'm only drafting Collins and DBrown.

Open to discussion.

ETA: oops'd on the Dyami Brown reference above, caught by @rockaction.

Too much reading of too many Threads b2b, probably could use a break, but it's just that time of year.

Nico and Higgins outside, Kirk slot, Noel competing there, sorry, SP, for any confusion.

agree on the point of Kirk plays slot, ala Diggs last year. Outside Higgins/Collins. They clearly took Higgins with a plan on using him, not backing up Collins.

Correct - what we need to know for FF purposes is target distribution.

They made Kirk a priority signing, albeit not a very expensive one, but as long as he’s healthy I believe he’s in 3 WR sets with Higgins + Nico

What I want to know is who’s their #2 target & who’s their #3

Which we may not know until the season. I like Noel, I’m just skeptical he beats out Kirk. IIRC they wanted an experienced receiver to replace Diggs.

August 5:

Sam Warren
#Texans Davis Mills now finds Jayden Higgins again on a fade for a diving, reaching back catch.

Higgins having his best practice of camp.

@TexansCommenter
They say there’s no defense for a perfect throw..

There’s definitely no defense for a perfect throw and a 1,000-foot wingspan.

Jayden Higgins isn’t real.

Jayden Higgins still has some work ahead of him to climb the depth chart:

Hayden Winks
This isn't overly surprising nor does it mean it'll hold for a majority of the regular season, but Christian Kirk was a 2-WR set starter and the slot WR in 3-WR sets.

I wasn't expecting Hutchinson to play over Higgins, too. Could take a few extra weeks longer than expected.

Brad Sherrill
To quote Ben Gretch, thinking what you don't know as fact is troublesome, talent will rise to the top. See Olabese Johnson and Justin Jefferson

Hayden Winks
my tweet was just acknowledging there were reports saying he was already a starter, and that's less clear right now.

@GregR

Bat signal sent.

Yes, I don't think it's a situation to feel confident about who might end up with the larger share, or even if they will end up about the same.

For short term I would probably go with Kirk if I had to choose one way or the other. Dynasty would rather have Higgins.

I expect they are going to try to get Noel into the mix too in some fashion. He's too good with the ball in his hands not to, but that might also include some time as a returner. He's a lot like Tank Dell in what he can bring and the desire to get him the ball in space.

The Texans lost Brevin Jordan at TE also which could impact receivers. I don't know that they have a 3rd TE who can do much in the passing game, and Cade is still proving himself.

I was thinking the other day I should come back in here and comment that I could see Xavier Hutchinson also messing up people's expectations about playing time and take some opportunity away from Higgins and Noel.

And he just got called out in the good fashion in a recent article:

Xavier Hutchinson emerging
Hutchinson, who is entering his third season with the Texans, is finally starting to emerge as a legitimate weapon.

He’s become one of Stroud’s go-to options in recent weeks, which would be a huge boost for the former sixth-round pick.

“I’m super proud of him,” Stroud said. “He’s playing with the most confidence I’ve seen. He’s balling. He’s doing really well.”

Hutchinson made a big play in the Texans’ playoff win over the Chargers, when he caught a pass from Stroud on a broken play. He’s been finding ways to get open throughout camp, which is something he had struggled with in the past.

Really it could just go so many directions. Other than Nico and Kirk I don't know that I'd be doing anything but late flyer in redraft if I were playing still.

****, literally just cut him because I didn't see a single positive thing on him all summer

Same, but I don’t think you’re going to be regretting that once the actual season begins. Especially once Higgins gets acclimated.

Interesting. Here in Houston, all I hear is that he's been killing it in camp and taking a big step. Big part of the reason they were able to cut ties with Metchie.

Getting back to Higgins...

I realize that Noel is talked up but I think there is plenty in there that eludes to Higgins getting the nod early on in the season
The guy is huge. Stands 6-4, 215+ almost as tall as Nico where Noel is 5-10 and the article says he has to push Kirk out at the slot in order to really win a starting job

And all this Hutch stuff, take it to the Hutch thread, there's no way he's playing ahead of Higgins when the season starts, I don't understand why everyone believes every little snippet they read or writer coming off the practice bleachers, they make these imaginary stories to deceive and make you think there is a secret weapon just waiting to explode

Focus on Nico and Higgins, they are going to be match up nightmares,

Could Higgins carve out a nice role in a likely pass happy O as the 3rd or maybe even 2nd option behind Nico?

Sure. But right now Kirk and Hutchinson are the three-wide guys, or the 11 personnel WRs. I'm sure the Texans would love for Noel and Higgins to take those jobs and run with them. It would mean they're darn good and they're cost controlled. But Higgins hasn't been effective enough so far from what I hear. We'll see.

Pretty much. I see everything after Nico as being a true WRBC. Lots of upside for Higgins but limited balls to go around this season.
