WR Luther Burden III, CHI (2 Viewers)

I blew some FAAB on this guy in redraft last night. The stars appear to be aligning for a breakout in usage, and the talent is obvious. At this point in the season, you're not going to find too many breakout candidates at WR who have a combination of talent and situation. I don't think he's going to be cheap after this next week.

I have Odunze, drafted as a WR 3, but he's performing like a WR 1/2.

In a risk reduction move in case of injury to Odunze, I'm considering picking up Burden. His snap share is still low, and unless DJ gets traded, I don't see how Luther excels in fantasy, barring injury to others, until 2026. There's only one football, and how many flea flickers can a team run.

We still don't know the full extent of DJs visit to the ER.

Also, to increase his usage, he doesn’t necessarily need to replace DJ. He just needs to supplant Zaccheaus. Once he’s on the field with Odunze and DJ, then it comes down to whoever is open and producing. If that happens, my bet is on Burden eating into their target share in a way that Zaccheaus didn’t/ can’t/ won’t.

I really want to add him, but it’s tough with byepocalypse next week and all the WR injuries. His floor seems very low if you need an injury or bye filler. I agree he’s a good stash for later in the season.

This is exactly why I grabbed him this week and why I've been clinging to Pearsall in my short bench league. I need to find a breakout WR (or two) or my season is pretty much done. If Moore sits this week I think it will be Burden's breakout party.

If DJ had a larger role and Burden was stepping into that I'd agree. But basically he's just now in line for the 4/61 that Moore would have been in line for.

He already had 4 targets himself coming out of the bye. The hope is that his role is growing anyway and he will continue to take some of Zaccheaus' 5.6 targets a game as the staff gains more trust in him and sees that he's doing a ton more with his targets than OZ. Moore being out means that he has the potential to take those targets from Moore plus some of the ones he was already going to get and have a 6-8 target game himself. Maybe that doesn't come to fruition, but he has the talent to do a whole lot with that increased volume. With all of the WR injuries and byes, he's worth a flyer for desperate teams like mine.

Looks like Moore is playing. I don't have much of a choice but to start Burden in my short bench league though unless I want to drop him, which I don't. I really need the win though. I'm actively trying to trade a RB for a WR so I can stash Burden,

I need a win too, and I’m starting him. That is, unless y’all can convince me to drop him and go with either Tutu or Whittington. I’m just super hesitant to give up long-term upside for a one-week play…
I'm in the same boat and I'm doing everything I can not to drop him. I may well end up starting him and hoping for the one or two big plays.

In a Guillotine spot I'm forced to start thanks to Pearsall news.

Therefore:

Yeah, thanks to Pearsall, G.Wilson and Nabers I'm potentially starting Burden, Addison and Tucker. Not how I drew it up, lol.

Great song BTW.

Olamide Zacchaeus: 50 targets, 32 catches, 248 yards
Luther Buren: 18 targets, 16 catches, 222 yards

Hmm... I wonder which one should be more involved in the passing game.

Zain Dhanani
Luther Burden definitely played more yesterday. With Olamide Zaccheus’ drop issue yesterday and the absurdly high efficiency on Burden targets this season, you have to wonder if Burden starts to get more playing time.

There wasn’t a big snap rate difference after OZ’s last drop.

@bearszn
Bears HC Ben Johnson on WR Luther Burden:

“He’s a guy who is starting to get more targets. It’s a trust level between the coaches and the player. It’s a trust level between the quarterback and a receiver. It continues to ascend. He has been very productive when he’s about to get the ball in his hands and there’s a strong argument that we should get it to him more.” 👀

No reason hes not ahead of OZ. should be getting a lot more play down stretch - I was bummed I drafted him over Golden earlier this season - changed mind since then

This situation is the only one I can think of where a rookie mid year just unleashed by the team and dominates into WR1. High respect for Odunze.

But…
Ascending offense
Ascending QB with Ben Johnson
Pedigree
Dominant small sample size
WR room injuries and drops

The only missing piece is snap share

It didn't result in a big day and he had one bad drop but Luther Burden ran a season-high 22 routes in Week 11, besting his previous season-high of 20 last week.

This was the first time all season he ran out as the top slot receiver over Olamide Zaccheus.

Dwain McFarland
Luther Burden played the WR3 role over Olamide Zaccheaus in Week 11 for the Bears.

61% routes
18% targets
23% targets per route run
5.7 PPR points

Zaccheaus: 19% routes

I want to buy Burden anywhere I can. He's already better than DJ Moore and I think DJ gets shipped out this offseason. The talent jumps off the screen and the opportunity is coming.
agreed and he may be a really low buy - for some reason when i watch i just see Caleb throwing to TEs - thats gotta change. also some strange game scripts - im liking for next year but may be on faith as he may not show a ton down t he stretch if they keep this up
