WR Match Ups to Exploit/Avoid (1 Viewer)

Here we go with some week 13 WR analysis!

We are using the same color code as last week.

Avoid

Sleeper

Good Start

Neutral

Green Bay @ Dallas:

This game should decide who exactly the best team in the NFC.

Green Bay Pass Defense – Ranked 18th

Dallas Pass Defense – Ranked 21st

Jennings/Driver/Lee: The Cowboys have the 21st ranked pass defense in the NFL. Jennings, Driver, and Lee all have to be licking their chops! This has the makings for a high-scoring game. All three of these guys make excellent starts in week 13.

TO/Crayton/Witten: I see the Cowboy offense making a statement in this game. I see Romo and Favre in a shootout, so it should be fun watching. TO is starting to heat up and this is a great match up for him. TE Jason Witten is having the best season of his career. Crayton missed last weeks game with an ankle injury and is just not getting targeted enough.

Buffalo @ Washington:

Buffalo Pass Defense – Ranked 29th

Washington Pass Defense – Ranked 13th

Evans/Parrish: I expect the Redskins defense to play some inspired football after the tragic death of Sean Taylor. Trent Edwards will return for the Bills at QB, and the Redskins have nobody to keep up with the speed of Lee Evans. Be careful though, this Bills offense has been horrible without Lynch moving the chains.

Avoid: Lee Evans (Very inconsistent has to be killing fantasy owners)

Moss/McCardell/Cooley: QB Jason Campbell should have no problems finding open receivers in this game. All three of these guys can be safely started against the Bills secondary that has given up a ton of passing TDs. I like Keenan McCardell this week as a surprise fantasy start simply because he is getting more targets the last three weeks. He’s receivers 21 looks the last three weeks, so he and Campbell are developing some chemistry. The match up is very good for all Redskin receivers.

Exploit: Keenan McCardell – 5 catches, 60+ yards, TD

San Francisco @ Carolina:

San Fran Pass Defense – Ranked 24th

Carolina Pass Defense – Ranked 16th

Davis/Battle: As everyone knows by now, the Carolina pass defense does not know how to defend TE’s. They’ve given up the most TDs to TE’s in the league. This means a huge day for 9er TE Vernon Davis. Receiver Arnaz Battle is the next best option in the passing game, so Dilfer could target him for a couple of deep balls.

Exploit: Davis/Battle (Love the match up for Davis)

Smith/Carter: Panther nation is praying QB Matt Moore gets the nod this week against the 49er’s. Moore has looked solid in limited action and that could mean good news for Steve Smith owners. Smith has not scored since week 8, but he’s got a good chance to score this week, as long as David Carr is not the QB. Drew Carter did manage nine targets last week, but only caught three of them for 41 yards. He’s not recommended this weekend against the 49er’s.

Jacksonville @ Indy:

Jacksonville Pass Defense – Ranked 28th

Indy Pass Defense – Ranked 2nd

Williams/Lewis: TE Mercedes Lewis led all Jag receivers last week with nine targets. Lewis hauled in five of them for 57 yards. Meanwhile although Reggie Williams only got one target, it was a 59-yard TD bomb from Garrard. Williams is playing hurt right now and is a very risky start. The Colts have a solid pass defense, so starting a Jag receiver is not very wise right now.

Wayne/Gonzalez/Clark: Rookie receiver Anthony Gonzalez had his best game of the year last week and led the team with 105 yards receiving. Reggie Wayne is a must start this week as usual. TE Dallas Clark is tied with Reggie Wayne with 7 TDs so far this season. If Harrison is out, I could see Gonzalez having another solid effort.

Exploit: Anthony Gonzalez – 5 catches 70+ yards, TD

San Diego @ KC:

San Diego Pass Defense – Ranked 23rd

KC Pass Defense – Ranked 9th

Gates/Chambers/LT: The KC defense frustrated Phillip Rivers back in week four and forced two INTs. I see KC hassling Rivers again this week, but the guy KC can’t stop is TE Antonio Gates. I would not start any other Charger receivers.

Bowe/Gonzo: Remember what this duo did against the Bolts in week four? Bowe and Gonzo combined for 13 catches, 135 yards, and two TDs. The Bolt secondary is not all that special and although they may not match what they did in week four, each of these guys should be good for 80+ yards and a TD.

NYJ @ Miami:

NYJ Pass Defense – Ranked 19th

Miami Pass Defense – Ranked 3rd

Cotchery/Coles: Wow, just as I was telling everybody Clemens was not as bad as he looked against the Steelers, he goes out and stinks the joint up in Dallas. Coles and Cotchery are solid options, but they are in desperate need of a QB who can get them the ball. I know the Fins have given up a lot of TDs this year, but I’d stay away from all Jet players until we see some form of life.

Booker/Martin: And in the runner up stink fest from last week, we have the Fins QB John Beck. Beck’s been horrible the past two games and the Fins are winless.

Detroit @ Minnesota:

Detroit Pass Defense – Ranked 31st

Minnesota Pass Defense – Ranked 32nd

Williams/Calvin Johnson/McDonald: The Vikes are giving up chunks of yardage through the air, so all three of these guys are must starts. Last week, the Lions finally figured out they have this guy named Calvin Johnson on their team. Johnson had his best game of the year catching seven passes for 83 yards and a TD. He was targeted a season high 15 times and made the most out of what the Packers gave him. After heating up the last couple of weeks, receiver Roy Williams frustrated his owners yet again catching a pedestrian like three passes for 32 yards. It will be hard to sit him this week against the league’s worst pass defense, so keep him in your lineup. The Lions most consistent receiver Shaun McDonald also disappointed his owners with a two catch, 18 yard effort. The Lions won’t be able to run the ball, so you can bet that Martz will have Kitna throwing all day long.

Sydney Rice: This is the only week, and I mean the ONLY week I would recommend a Viking WR. Sydney Rice is by far the Vikes most explosive receiver. Last week, Tavaris Jackson hit Rice with a 60-yard bomb on the second play of the game against the Giants. Rice caught four passes for 82 yards and a TD and should find similar success this week against the Lions.

Exploit: Sydney Rice – 5 catches, 65+ yards, TD

Seattle @ Philadelphia:

Seattle Pass Defense – Ranked 14th

Philadelphia Pass Defense – Ranked 22nd

Branch/Engram/Hackett: Keep an eye on Matt Hassleback’s injury. There’s a chance he may not play which would affect the stats of the Seahawk receivers. Assuming he plays (and I think he will) this is a great match up for the receivers. Just as fast as DJ Hackett came back to reward his fantasy owners, he goes down with an ankle injury that may have ended his season. That is going to open the door for Deion Branch and Bobby Engram. Branch led the team in targets against the Rams last week with ten. He caught five of them for 92 yards and a TD. Bobby Engram was able to pull down seven of his nine targets for 70 yards. Branch if healthy is the better option within the Hawks offense. He is an excellent play this week and looks to be healthy.

Exploit: Deion Branch – 7 catches 100 yards, TD

Lewis/Curtis/Brown/Westbrook: The passing game flourished last Sunday night for the Eagles as they found a way to hang with the explosive Patriots. AJ Feeley led the Philly passing attack and tossed three TDs. Greg Lewis caught four passes for 88 yards and two TDs. Kevin Curtis and Reggie Brown led the team in targets with nine each. AJ seems to have ignited the Philly passing attack and they should have some success through the air against the Seahawks. Lewis, Curtis, and Brown are all serviceable options this week in fantasy lineups. Westy is a must start, but I did not have to tell you that.

Exploit: Kevin Curtis – 5 catches 80+ yards, TD

Atlanta @ STL:

Atlanta Pass Defense – Ranked 8th

STL Pass Defense – Ranked 12th

Roddy White: White continues to be the only Falcon player worth starting. In last week’s loss to the Colts, White went over the 100 yard receiving mark for the third time this year. Depending on which Rams offense decides to show up, the Falcons may be forced to throw the ball a lot. White should have no problems getting 100+ yards and a TD. He’s a solid WR3/Flex play this week against the Rams secondary.

Holt/Bruce/Bennett: The concussion to QB Mark Bulgar has to concern Holt/Bruce/Bennett owners. It’s been a disappointing season for the entire Rams offense this year, but Holt and Bruce still present some value. Check the status of Ike Bruce and his sprained hand. He should be good to go though, and makes a nice WR3/Flex option.

Exploit: Ike Bruce – 6 catches 60 yards, TD

Houston @ Tennessee:

Houston Pass Defense – Ranked 17th

Tennessee Pass Defense – Ranked 7th

Johnson/Walter/Daniels: Despite the loss last week to the Brownies, the Texan offense is definitely more potent with Matt Shaub back. Last week, Daniels and Walter each hauled in TD passes from Shaub, but Cleveland did do a good job locking down Andre Johnson. The Titan pass defense has been getting torched recently, so Shaub and company could present some problems for the Titan secondary. Look for Andre Johnson to break one lose this week for at least one TD. Daniels and Walter are also solid options this week and should be in all fantasy lineups.

Gage/Scaife: I told everyone about Titan WR Justin Gage last week. Get this guy on your team if he’s still available. He and Vince Young are clicking right now, and Vince is targeting him like crazy. Within the last three games, Gage has gotten at least seven targets in each game. Last week, Gage was targeted seven times and caught four of them for 98 yards. Another reliable option for Young seems to be his TE Bo Scaife. Scaife has been targeted at least eight times within the last four weeks. He’s getting the opportunities to produce and is what I believe a nice start this week against the Titans.

Exploit: Justin Gage - 6 catches, 75+ yards, TD (Developing into a go-to receiver)

Cleveland @ Arizona:

Cleveland Pass Defense – Ranked 30th

Arizona Pass Defense – Ranked 20th

My prediction for this game is a lot of points! This could only mean fantasy points galore!

Edwards/Winslow: If the 49er’s can put up 37 points, and Trent Dilfer can throw for 250+ yards and 2 TDs against this defense, you can only imagine what kind of damage Derek Anderson the high-scoring Browns can do! Consider yourself lucky if you have Edwards and Winslow and start them confidently. Edwards and Winslow could both go over 100 yards and find their way into the end zone.

Boldin/Fitz: Keep an eye on the Kurt Warner injury situation. Word is Warner is doing a lot of praying this week to heal, and we all know how powerful the prayer is. He should be good to go. But even if he can’t go, Tim Rata-Tat-Tay should do just fine passing against one of the league’s worse pass defenses. Boldin and Fitz are must starts this week.

Denver @ Oakland:

Denver Pass Defense – Ranked 10th

Oakland Pass Defense – Ranked 4th

Marshall/Stokley/Walker: Not a great match up here for the Broncos. Oakland’s pass defense has been keeping receivers out of the end zone and I don’t expect a Bronco receiver to see pay dirt this week.

Curry/Porter: The Denver pass defense is a bit banged up right now as Champ Bailey and Dre Bly are not healthy. I still would not trust a Raider receiver, as they seem to be content on running the ball with Fargas and Jordan. Sit Curry and Porter this week and find better options.

NYG @ Chicago:

NYG Pass Defense – Ranked 11th

Chicago Pass Defense – Ranked 25th

Burress/Toomer/Shockey: Bad call on listing Burress on the “Avoid” list last week, but the guy is hurting and again is questionable this week. Monitor the situation with Burress’ injury before putting him into your lineup. Amani Toomer and Shockey should be seeing more passes coming their way against the Bears poor pass defense. Toomer should be able to take advantage of the Bears secondary and also find his third TD through the air.

Exploit: Amani Toomer - 6 catches 65+ yards, TD

Berrian/Moose/Olson: QB Rex Grossman struggled last week against the Broncos pass defense. His stats were padded by a late TD in the fourth quarter. The Giants lead the league in sacks, and that does not bode well for the Bears and Rex Grossman. Trust me when I say that Rex Grossman is going to struggle this week.

Tampa Bay @ New Orleans:

Tampa Bay Pass Defense – Ranked 5th

New Orleans Pass Defense – Ranked 27th

Galloway/Hilliard: With news that Jeff Garcia will not start in week 13 due to injury, will Hilliard and Galloway have a hard time developing chemistry with Luke McCown? I don’t think so. Joey Galloway has owned the Saints and is virtually a lock for a TD this week. Ike Hilliard could exploit the Saints secondary due to all the attention Galloway will get. Hilliard and Galloway are must starts this week.

Colston: Saints QB Drew Brees is doing a great job distributing the ball to all of his receivers. But the one guy he trusts is Marques Colston. Colston continued his recent tear last week by catching seven passes for 93 yards and a TD. Despite what looks like a tough match up, you have to start Colston who is a solid WR2 this week.

Cincinnati @ Pittsburgh:

Cincinnati Pass Defense – Ranked 26th

Pittsburgh Pass Defense – Ranked 1st

I mentioned this a couple weeks ago when these two teams squared off. The road team has dominated this series in recent years. So for all you guys who think Pittsburgh will win this game simply because they are playing at home, don’t be so sure.

Chad Johson/Housh/Chris Henry: My second straight bold prediction came through last week, as I advised everyone to “Avoid” Chris Henry and that it would be Chad Johnson’s day to shine. Three TDs from Ocho Cinco later and you can see why Henry is the #3 WR, and NOT #86. Tough match up here for the Bengal WRs, and I’m pulling the ol’ “Avoid” card on Ocho Cinco yet again. The Steelers have done a great job containing Chad in the past, as he has not had a TD against them since 2004. I don’t see the Steelers doing anything different, as I will be surprised if he goes over 70 yards this week.

Avoid: Chad Johnson (Steelers know how shut down Ocho Cinco)

Ward/Washington/Miller: I feel sorry for who ever started a Steeler offensive players last week in what was THE MOST sloppiest game of the year. This will change drastically this week against a Bengals defense the Steelers should shred. If you are looking for a sleeper to plug into your lineup this week, roll the dice with Nate Washington. If Santonio Holmes does not play, (and I don’t think he will) Nate has a chance to put up 50+ yards and TD.

Exploit: Nate Washington – 4 catches, 50 yards, TD

New England @ Baltimore:

New England Pass Defense – Ranked 6th

Baltimore Pass Defense – Ranked 15th

Be very careful here as my gut tells me this game could be much like last weeks against the Eagles and A LOT closer that people think. If there was ever a time that the Ravens defense needed to step up, it’s on national TV this week.. I’m not predicting an upset win, but….I’m just saying.

Moss/Welker/Stallworth/Gaffney: OK, so the Eagles showed everyone last week how to shut out Randy Moss. But did the Ravens take notes? I know there is nobody in the league that can guard Moss, but they apparently did something right. Wes Welker is starting to grow on me, and I like this kid a lot. Look at where he came from last year and then look at what he’s doing with Brady and the Pats. The guy is a PPR machine and I expect at least 7+ catches this week for 80 yards and a strong possibility for a TD. Stallworth and Gaffney are too inconsistent, but with the way Brady is tossing TDs, one of them could find the end zone this week.

Mason/Clayton/Darling: I’m as shocked as everybody else at how the Eagles were able to put up points with AJ Feely as their QB. Derrick Mason finally snapped out of his brief funk and caught seven passes for 99 yards off of 15 targets. These are the type of stats you can again expect against the Pats this week. Mason is also the one receiver with the best possibility of finding the end zone. After a solid 100 yard, TD game in week 11, Devard Darling came crashing back down to earth with a two catch 24 yard performance in week 12. Mark Clayton has got to be one of the most frustrating players to own. The guy has some talent, but just can’t seem to put it all together consistently.

I'm getting the impression people don't like the Top 5 to Avoid/Exploit, so I left that out this week. Let me know if I'm wrong though. I can still list a Top 5 to Avoid/Exploit each week if you would like.

Galloway/Hilliard: With news that Jeff Garcia will not start in week 13 due to injury, will Hilliard and Galloway have a hard time developing chemistry with Luke McCown? I don't think so. Joey Galloway has owned the Saints and is virtually a lock for a TD this week.
If Galloway doesn't score, I'm gonna punch you in the brain.virtually.

If Garcia can't go, either Bruce Gradkowski or Luke McCown will start in his place. Gradkowski replaced Garcia and struggled Sunday, and coach Jon Gruden has indicated he might move McCown ahead of Gradkowski on the depth chart.

If one of these 2 are throwing i think somebody is gettin a beat down

Loved the call on #85 last week. Past 2 weeks you have convinced me on 50/50 decisions to start and or not. This week I will heed the words again as ill start Branch over Ocho Cinco, start along side TO and Welker.

Great call on Chad Johnson last week. I was one of the guys who didn't believe it and thought Henry > CJ last week. This week, not so sure. With Polamalu likely out I'm torn between Henry and Chad. Good problem to have, but a pain in the ### as I seem to pick the wrong one each week lol

Rice>evans this week? I know the skins will play inspired but how good is the skins secondary really?
Why is this soo outrageous? Rice was better than Evans last week wasn't he? And who has the better match up? Rice against the Lions bottom five secondary, or Evans against the Skins top 15 defense?

I'm not falling for this again. Evans had a GREAT matchup last week against a Mathis-less Jaguars secondary and didnt catch a pass until late in the 4th quarter.

Booker/Martin: And in the runner up stink fest from last week, we have the Fins QB John Beck. Beck’s been horrible the past two games and the Fins are winless.

Not really sure where this is coming from. Beck has played Pittsburg's #1 Rated pass D, and Philadelphia which gave Brady just about all he could handle.

I thought Beck looked pretty good. I am not advocating starting either one of these slugs, as I saw Miamis' receivers drop way to many passes Monday night.

I agree with your point about the game tonight being a shootout, but TO is going to have to deal with Al Harris tonight. Harris has a very good track record of shutting down team's #1 WRs.

Witten is the solid play for Dallas tongiht, TO not so much.

With that said, you could be right if TO were to beat Harris' bumps off the line once or twice. So, I guess we'll see.

Holy Crap guys! Sorry about that. Don't know why I threw in Champ Bailey. Yes, I know he plays for the same team as BMarsh. I have not had my morning coffee yet, so apparently I need to go get some... Quickly...

Regardless, I think BMarsh is going to have a hard time producing this week. The Raiders just don't give up passing TDs.

LOL; j/k. Thanks for the analysis.

I'm in the Gage train for the 2nd week in a row to replace S.Holmes

Well I went with your advice two weeks ago and benched Chad Johnson in favor of Galloway and it worked out. Last week I took your advice and started Ocho Cinco and that worked out as well. I don't know if I can bench Chad this week ... too much is on the line, and I have a feeling he will shine on Sunday Night

I hope I'm not wrong ..

You might want to check the weather reports Knight. If the conditions are anything like last Monday night like they are suppose to be, the passing game for both teams will struggle. JMO though and I could be wrong here. Good Luck

Even with better options on your bench I can't imagine anyone sitting TO at this point. I can see tempering your expectations but he's a red zone target and there should be plenty of scoring to go around.

I have to make a decision between Bruce and Jones (GB) today as my #3

Still no definitive news on whether Bulgar will play or not. I may have to replace Bruce with Jones and hope he gets involved tonight.

I also need to start Marshall this week, and was a little turned off by his matchup against OAK. Then I looked at who OAK played, and feel much better. They've played against KC twice, TEN, HOU (with Rosenfels), MIA, etc etc etc. Not exactly the most potent passing attacks. Two matchups that stood out at me were DEN, DET and CLE where each opposing QB went for about 250 yards or more.

Plus, last time DEN and OAK played, Walker grabbed 8 for 100 and a score and Marshall added something like 6 for 80.

All in all, I feel much better about the matchup.

I think Marshall can do well vs. Oakland this week. I don't think Oakland has a very physical secondary. Seems like a guy with Marshall's size could really gash Oak.

Observe how Oakland has fared vs. physical receivers:

Calvin Johnson: 4 catches, 70 yards, 1 TD

Brandon Marshall: 5 catches, 82 yards

Kellen Winslow: 6 catches, 88 yards

Braylon Edwards: 4 catches, 83 yards, 1 TD

I have either Marshall or Vernon Davis this week as a flex, and I am starting Marshall.

All this Champ Bailey talk got me confuSSed. I think Brandon will be ok, not great just because they'll be running all day.

I was wondering about James Jones tonight as a sneaky play but will probably stick with Gage in my WR4 position. Which means 100+TD for Jones, about 30+0 for Gage.

The way I see it, Oakland has one less weapon on Denver to worry about. And most of the attention will NOW be on Brandon Marshall.

So you think Oak is good enough to stifle Marshall? I am fighting for a playoff spot. Do you think that Vernon Davis is a better play than Marshall?

Who is covering Marshall? Little F. Washington? Good luck if Asomugha is still out. Hell, good luck if he's not. Marshall is a beast. He had a TD called back due to his push off week 2. It was a push off too. Problem was that he didn't need to. He would have scored anyway.

I'm wondering about Donald Lee's production tonight. I just traded for him so haven't been following him closely all year, but was concerned watching him last week vs Detroit. He only had one catch, although it was nearly a TD. Not sure how many total targets he had but that's the only one I remember seeing. He was mostly blocking as Favre threw to all the WR's. Do you think he'll see more looks tonight since it should be a closer game, or does that matter? My other option is Marcedes Lewis, who seemingly should have more targets than Lee but is listed here as an avoid because he's playing Indy. What say you?

I'm trying to be very careful not to make this a WDIS thread. But if you are looking for who has the better Match Ups, this is the place to come. With that being said, the Panthers have not defended TE's very well at all this year. Look at some of their previous games and how the TE's were used. You will see a LOT of TDs from TEs. Good luck with your decision.

Lee only got one target. But it was only because Driver, Jennings, and the other GB receivers had an easy time getting open. If I remember correctly, he almost scored on his one catch he had. He's a solid play tonight, even though he only had one target last week.

Ok, so the matchup for Lee is seemingly better than it is for Lewis, but with the Packers having so many quality receiving options and the Jags not so much, plus their other tight ends being injured, is that enough to make Lewis the better option? I know Lee had several very good games before last week, so maybe he can bounce back tonight, but I'm just looking for some more insight here.

You're correct, he did almost score on that one. He was tackled right at the 1 or 2. So if Driver and Jennings have a tougher time tonight, then it should help Lee, sure. I'm just concerned that he'll be staying home blocking all the time again though. Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for your hard work and inights. I need to decide between Lee Evans, Cotchery, Mason, Crayton, Rice, or J. Jones (the last three are on our wire) as my WR#3 - alongside Fitz and S. Smith (CAR). Evans has been a crapshoot every week and it's hard to predict how the WAS defense will respond this weekend. I'm tempted to just stick Lee in there and cross my fingers. But now I'm thinking that Rice might be the sneaky play at home vs. the Lions. They've been aweful all year vs. the pass.

I need this game to make the playoffs. Which way would you go?

Thanks for your hard work and inights. I need to decide between Lee Evans, Cotchery, Mason, Crayton, Rice, or J. Jones (the last three are on our wire) as my WR#3 - alongside Fitz and S. Smith (CAR). Evans has been a crapshoot every week and it's hard to predict how the WAS defense will respond this weekend. I'm tempted to just stick Lee in there and cross my fingers. Copy and paste this into the Assistant Coach Forum. You will get a better answer in there. Good Luck this week.

Just released -- Bulgar is OUT this week.

How does this affect Holt and Bruce....... Ferrotte didn't look good in limited action last week, have to downgrade quite a bit I imagine.

Lee only got one target. But it was only because Driver, Jennings, and the other GB receivers had an easy time getting open. If I remember correctly, he almost scored on his one catch he had. He's a solid play tonight, even though he only had one target last week.
I wouldnt play Lee until you see them go away from their 4 WR, no TE set in the redzone. Was really frustrating last week because I watched the whole game. i think he only got 2 targets.

EXACTLY my situation. I just picked up Rice. I don't like that rice doesn't get receptions. I think his max for the year is 5, evans is 9, but you're right williamson looks to be out this week, and lions have good offense and horrible passing game. Vikings will likely have to pass some to stay in it. I am just worried about the number of receptions Rice gets.

I wasn't saying it was outrageous at all. I was just hoping he was right because im prepared to start Rice. I was just questioning him, but not in a disagreeing way.

Nope, he actually only had one target as mentioned a couple of posts ago. The one catch though almost went for a TD. The only reason Lee did not see more targets is b/c the GB WRs were open all game long.
