WR Mike Evans, TB (10 Viewers)

What are Evans owners doing with him? I was seeing he might be back weeks 14 to 16 but is that even realistic? In a 10 team league, I have benson on IR now with a projected week 10 return. BTJ is my next receiver (who also may be hurting). After him is Quintin Johnston so I have to go wr hunting now. Will be swapping Bourne for one as I think his time as a star in sf has come to an end. My only other options for wr help is dropping Evans or dropping Corum or Brian Robinson who I have backing up Kyren and CMC. I may drop Evans and hope I can pick him backup once benson comes off IR (or I may just go with BTJ, Johnston, and the wr dart throw for the week).

I have him in a keep-4 auction league where his price didn't really justify him being kept next year anyway, so I'm cutting him.

Man, just watched the replay of this injury for the first time and the thought that came to mind is whether or not a grass field would have made a difference. I think it would have. Dude got KO'd by the ground just before his busted his shoulder. :( :( :(

Will he go on IR today before waivers run tonight? If he doesn't, that is a bummer for me. I need the roster spot before I can add anyone and that requires being able to put Evans on my league IR.

You make a great point, and, yes, I think that natural grass would have lessened the blow to Evans head and shoulder.

I listen to Chris Simms’ podcast. Last week, Simms and co-host Connor Rogers were going off about how the NFL is a multi-billion dollar industry which emphasizes player safety, yet they continue to allow players to play on artificial surfaces which likely increase the risk of injury.

Simms and Rogers were further annoyed by the fact that some NFL stadiums with artificial turf do, in fact, bring in grass when they host soccer games. So if grass can be used in those stadiums then why can’t it be used for NFL games if player safety is supposedly the NFL’s priority?

I wouldn't be surprised if he retired. I don't think he will, but I wouldn't be surprised.
I think it's tough for a competitive athlete to go out like that. However, Mike has dealt with multiple lower body injuries over the last few years. This is the first time he's had a significant upper body injury, and it looked like he also suffered a concussion.

He hinted at retirement prior to the season. I hope he comes back, but with the streak over I also expect he'll retire.

I know it's just a play on words, but I didn't say I expect him to retire, I said I wouldn't be surprised if he retired.

Ok. My bad.

This was an odd game for Mike. He was throwing his body all over the field. I knew it wasn’t going to end well. There was a play in which he collided with a Tampa receiver and a defender. Then the catch ruled a bobble on the sideline where he came down hard on his tailbone. Another leap full strech where he crashed out of bounds and then the inevitable injury play. Dude plays hard and went all out but the injury concerns and age are real. Healing is slower. Maybe he comes back but watching him on MNF was painful. I think he can still get after the ball but not the violent collisions on field turf.

One thing to factor in all of this is money. This is the last year of his contract. You gotta think that he believes he has another shot at one more NFL contract before he hangs it up. Just 31. He won't get top 20 wr money, but one more 2 year payday with some guaranteed money before his NFL salary journey is complete. Imo

I have nothing to base this on, but I wonder if Evan's mind was into this game and perhaps he should have sat out until after their week 9 bye? I know this injury has nothing to do with the hamstring issue, but I do think players are more susciptible to injuries if they are not mentally prepared. I'm not so sure Evans was mentally prepared for this game. Again, I have absolutely nothing to base that on.

I'm not going to say you're wrong, BUT he has made over $155M in his career just in salary. He left money on the table when he re-signed with the Bucs after 2023. I don't think money is motivating him anymore. IF he comes back it'll be because he still wants to play and thinks he can perform at a high level.

The injuries have got to be taking their toll.

Because these rich, miserly old guys don't want to spend the money on bringing in sod grass every week. It's all about the Benjamins.

Not sure where the break is in the collarbone and the specific dynamics of the injury as there are different situations depending
on where and what exactly happened to him. Did he hurt his A/C also?

Good points. I will say, never underestimate the money. In our world we have this idea that players should just play for the love of the game. Or they have already made enough money. Sure, it's a big part of it, but let's not forget their skillset allows them to set up their family and their family's family for life. Also, not every player is as good as Gronk with finances. I have no idea how Evans is from a spending standpoint. Heck, after they take 40 plus percent of that 150 right out of the gate he could be broke. Ha ha

Off on his age, he's 32 (born Aug 21, 1993) and will be 33 next year. I could see him signing a 1 year deal maybe and still being fantasy viable but there's not a lot of guys still in the NFL these days at the WR position at that age that are contributors. I believe Hopkins & Keenan Allen are 33, and Thielen is 35. I'm sure I'm missing someone and there are a few guys Evans age that will probably still play at a high level next year like Davante Adams, but not many
