WR Nathaniel “Tank” Dell, HOU (1 Viewer)

The other alarming stat from yesterday,

  • Tank Dell played in three of a possible 19 snaps in two-receiver sets, costing him 11 pass plays.

As discussed prior to the season, Diggs was probably going to eat into Dell's snaps and production while leaving Nico alone as the only X in this offense.
Was that the discussion prior to the season?
Not in this thread.

I didn't see too many sell recommendations on Tank anywhere.
You're right it wasn't in this thread, but from the Dell vs Nico what am I missing thread somewhere on this forum,

Diggs will cut into Dell's role while Nico stays on the field in every WR set. Nico's role remains unchanged and his floor is higher due to that reality.

That was my take prior to the season in August. I'm sure others here repeated something similar, but I haven't checked all the posts.

If I'm a Tank share owner, I'm not selling yet though.

What are people buying with dell? Talented second year breakout wr who actually already broke out? I think you could sell that- reality right now is much different but I’d be hesitant to sell him regardless. If anything he is a buy but don’t feel you’ll ever get to buy him low
I think he's a sell or a buy, depending on what people think they are selling or buying. If I thought I was buying a flex, who can win weeks with big games, great. I will buy that.

If I own him, and people are still thinking he is gonna be 1A or something, then I am selling. Someone wants to give me WR2 return for Dell, I will sell.

I'm sure Monson will say that 'if it weren't for injuries....' yada yada yada.
It would've been a great matchup for Tank considering how he performed against the Jags last year. But I think the bigger issue is Diggs vulturing the targets.
And now Nico on the injury report with a limited session today. Would be nice to have Dell play.

Thinner receivers starting to drop like flies as the NFL turns back into the more physical less finesse style :crying:

At what point do we start questioning his weight and size?

"Diggs has the shake and quickness to beat press jams off of the line of scrimmage and is a professional route runner who can line up at the X, Y and Z positions with the NFL experience to understand how to beat any coverage."

Please stop saying Diggs can't play the X WR role.

I tire of this ignorance.

Diggs can play X, but he never will with Nico starting alongside. That was the meaning of the comment.

If Nico misses time, Diggs slides into that X role.

At this stage of his career, Diggs is best utilized as Z or Y, so that's his normal role in this offense.

That isn't what you said.

Recievers switch roles depending on the play call.

Diggs didn't forget how to play at this stage of his career. That statement implies that Diggs is old and can't do what he has done his whole career anymore.

Yes my mistake for not explaining sooner.

Nico and Diggs rarely interchange roles when both are out there together. Collins is definitely the X in this offense as any Texan fan can confirm.

Diggs is still a good WR, and best utilized where he is now by Slowik. Even before arriving in Houston, Diggs was already playing more Z and Y in Buffalo during the 2023 season. He's still a skilled technician with excellent hands, and showing to be dependable underneath. His success rates vs press, man, and zone coverages all dipped last season, which is the first sign that father time is catching up.

The Coachspeak Index
#Texans OC Bobby Slowik on Tank Dell:

“When you can run the route tree the way he runs it, and get in and out of breaks like he can get in and out of breaks, and how fast he comes out of them, that just becomes really hard to cover, really fast.”

He just said a whole lot of nothing.
“He gets open” lol
I wish he'd get open and catch more footballs this year. He had one chance to make a big play against Chicago, and he whiffed. Last year, you noticed him. This year it's like he's on a milk carton.

I think Tank Dell is pound for pound one of the very best wide receivers in the NFL. Unfortunately he seems to be stuck as a handcuff to Nico Collins and Stefon Diggs at this juncture. Not enough route participation or target volume for his talents. If either Collins or Diggs miss time though, we’re back in business. For now he’s a risky flex option.

actually, he’s almost run as many routes as both those guys and will have some monster games this year. Granted, Diggs has put a dent in his production, but good games are coming. I think this is the week he scores a long TD.

Well he'll do it on my bench.

Yeah, there is no way you start him unless you’re out of options.

I wouldn't worry about Tank one bit as long as he's healthy. Nico's biggest negative is his injury history. Diggs for whatever negative people have about him is solid always playing (hope I'm not jinxing!)

Except last year when he got the season ending injury.

that was fluky...he was blocking at the goal line and got rolled up on. Happens.

Now or never, but I have my doubts. League looks to have adjusted to the Texans and Tank, and hangover from injuries. But will roll him out this week

I'm assuming lets use Tank Dell the tiniest player to be involved in goal line scrums won't happen again. Nico every season missed games dealing with leg.

Looking at rankings, it doesn't seem like experts are giving Dell the benefit of the doubt.

Was thinking of trying to buy before a breakout, but starting to wonder if he just hasn't come around from his injury and being shot. That plus what you've mentioned as far as defenses adjusting. I don't think it's a coincidence that Stroud hasn't performed up to last year's standards.

I'm biased as I owned him last year and he was spectacular prior to injury, but maybe thinking he's just going to jump right into that production isn't realistic.

If you have a roster spot and the need I’d grab him if I had the space. They have a passing offense and the biggest cog is gone for 4 weeks. Dell is good but he was coming off an injury so who knows how “healthy” he really was/is. He’s a good wr as we clearly saw last year and he didn’t just lose it.

I always try to grab the guys before they do something rather kick myself and hope I can snag them after the big week.

Dell looks healthy to me. They just haven't done a good job getting him the ball downfield in space. Seems like a lot of teams are playing the Texans with with Tampa 2 because they suck at running the ball too. IDK.

Well, he's not grabbable as he's not on the wire. I'd have to trade for him.

Was dangling J. Ford and D. Wicks with no response.

Fair deal and a good guy to go after, but he's not a smash

Slightly higher target share than Diggs today but similar numbers. Don't know how much more passing will be done today with the Pats being ineffective.

I never knew calling Xavier Worthy a Tank Dell clone was actually a double burn.

I like both players, but they are gadgety and unreliable on a weekly basis.
