WR Odell Beckham, Jr., Free Agent (6 Viewers)

ya, if he came out, the media would turn him into a demi god.

he should, if he is. live free, man
If he comes out today no way the NFL suspends him.

Cause celebre - this story goes international if it's true.
I know it's really easy to sit here behind a keyboard and say that he should come out if he's gay but the NFL is EXTREMELY homophobic as an institution. In this day and age though if it is true it will come out at some point because he's too high profile and someone at some point will look to cash in.

I agree with you Banger. There are a lot of athletes who would have a big problem playing with or against OBJ if he came out.

I'm just saying IF he did - we're presuming he is gay, just because he's flamboyant and loves to dance doesn't mean we know - it would transcend sports. It would be a huge, worldwide story.

But it's up to him. Nobody should be forced to come out.

And there's also the possibility he isn't gay. There have been lots of guys rumored to be gay and they never came out (and presumably the rumors were false - Jeff Garcia, Peyton Manning, et al.)

If the league is so concerned about head hits, why did they not stop the game to check for a concussion on Norman after the blow tot he head?

If he gets suspended for the SNF game, he will win an over turn on appeal.
Not likely he'd win an appeal. Very rare.
He doesn't need to win the appeal, he just needs to file it so that he's not suspended for week 16.
Not how it works - discussed earlier in the thread. Appeals are heard within a day or two. Unlike other sports, justice is swift in the NFL. It would be ruled on before the Thursday kickoff, this happened a couple times last year.

Watching NFL network highlights....Steelers game, Cody Wallace, the most penalized interior OL in the league, launches yet again doing almost exactly what OBJ did. Only difference is that Wallace isn't a first time offender. If OBJ is suspended, pretty sure Wallace should be suspended.

Is this sarcasm? Seems like the NFL is the opposite of swift on appeals process.

For fines and suspensions during the season? It's one or two days tops. See Suh last year. I posted the process and who's involved earlier.

Are you thinking deflategate is representative of how the in season process works? Otherwise, I guess I'm not following you.

Steve Smith was applauded for being an immature hot head. Why? Because he is short?

People are being way too hard on OBJ. He's 22 years old. He's passionate about football. He's highly competitive and handled Norman's mind games very poorly. I'm sure he'll learn from this. I guarantee he does. Some of you guys are hilarious with your character assessments of young men who are still growing into manhood, both physically and emotionally. Add in all of the adoration. I'm willing to bet many would struggle handling all of that without flaw.
Would you mind stepping over to the Josh Gordon thread and explaining away HIS deficiencies too? Thanks in advance.

Exactly. The league is full of 22 year olds. I don't see the rest of them having a two quarter temper tantrum on the field and running 15 yards to launch himself into a another player's head.

I've been saying for over a year that he sets off my gaydar.. Many things this year on social media have been suspect as well.

I think it would be great if he came out, he'd instantly be the greatest gay WR of all time.

I am only referring to fines and suspensions related to game infractions.

Obviously conduct away from the field is a different matter, they've dragged their feet on several issues (Ray Rice, Peterson, Hardy, deflategate.) But for infractions related to in game hits, etc, the player is suspended, appeals the next day, and gets a hearing and decision after another day. It's not like other sports where you can break a guy's leg and appeal your suspension so you keep playing.

Greatest gay or Gayest great? He'd instantly win both.

I think it would be awesome. It's inevitable somebody is coming out. The sooner it happens the sooner nobody will GAF one way or another.

Nobody of consequence would care. He would be adulated and anyone that had issues would be dealt with "swiftly". He's already established himself as one of the best players in the game, which is all that really matters as we saw yesterday.

What's with the quotation marks, brah? Are saying someone who uses that word is gay?

[runs 40 feet and spears tone1loc]

If ODB was being taunted about being gay, true or not, then I think that should be handled the same way the NFL is penalizing racial comments on the field. His anger could at least be understood but still, he needs to be held accountable for his on-field actions.

the pacman jones slamming amari's head in to the turf is similar to me. he was fined $35k and no suspension.... this for a bad guy like pac man. To my knowledge OBJ has not been fined for on field violent antics. hefty fine would be the route the league should take if they want to remain consistent (ha-ha)

Beckham was fined earlier in the year for throwing a punch in the Bills game.

That's actually a great point. If a POS like Jones can avoid suspension for something just as ugly then they need to be consistent.

I agree. I wouldn't be suprised if the NFL's policy already included sexual orientation slurs as part of the rules on racial slurs, if not I'm sure they will add it.

This is genius. Even if he's not gay he should come out to avoid suspension.
Even better would be having his agent make some allusions to the commissioner's office.

ODB agent: I hope you guys realize that my client was being taunted for being gay.

Commish's office: really, well that is extremely unfortunate and something we will need to look into but that still doesn't justify ODB's actionon the field. Specifically the tartgetting of Norman's head

ODB agent: well, I don't think you want to be on the wrong side of an LGBT issue

Commish's office: are you saying that your client is gay

ODB agent: well, I also don't think you want this to be the reason my client needs to come out publicly regarding his sexuality, do you?

Commish's office: so he's gay?

ODB agent: so you are forcing him out?

Commish's office: no, no, no...ok...I understand

Result, would be fines for both ODB and Norman and no suspensions...genius!

should he get suspended? yes

Will he get suspended? probably

Will he appeal the likely suspension and play this week? absolutely
I doubt that happens. They won't allow the player and team to manipulate which game he misses. They have a must win game with Minnesota this week. If they lose, next week's game means nothing. The league isn't going to let the Giants dictate which game he misses. If there's a suspension, it'll be announced today or tomorrow and the appeal will be Friday.
That's what always happens. The league's goal isn't to punish the entire Giants organization.
Why not? The Giants did nothing to diffuse the situation and left a dangerous player on the field. They could (should) have easily benched him after multiple unsportsmanlike penalties.
Huge Giants fan here, and I could not agree more, and said that several times during the game. Completely lost all respect for Coughlin, who said he "never even considered benching him" and seemed to have a very indifferent attitude about it after the game. I would think the Mara's can't be too happy with his antics, as he has really embarrassed the organization.
I thought Coughlin said in his presser that he "strongly considered" benching him during the game. And I didnt get "indifference" at all from him.

I'm a Skins fan and did not lose any respect at all for Coughlin. He's in a tough spot here. If I'm him I'm not benching Beckam either b/c they're trying to win the game and stay in playoff contention. If the refs didnt toss him then I'd have kept him in the lineup as well and internally disciplined him.

Bottom line: spearing someone head to head is far too dangerous to allow to go unpunished.

It shows an utter lack of control. OBJ could have easily been hurt also.

Prior history becomes irrelevant.

well, if Coughlin knows that ODB is getting called queer and other related gay slurs like homo, friend of dorothy, ######, fudge packer, etc. than he was probably in a tough position to come down too hard on ODB.

I watched the national feed and the post-game presser with a few friends, including a couple of Giants fans, and everyone agreed that Coughlin didn't seem indifferent so much as tired. Resigned. As in, "None of this is gonna be my problem in two more weeks anyway, but I can't come right out and say that, so let's just get this whole charade over with" resigned.

Does anyone think the Coughlin of 2-3 years ago wouldn't have been up in OBJ's grill even after the first couple of incidents, or wouldn't have blown his stack after the spear?

It seemed to me that Coughlin was doing what had to be done to win a must-win game, knowing internally that it wouldn't matter what kind of "message" he'd be sending or "respect" he'd be losing.

ODB: "man, I think they're gonna suspend me..."

Eli: "not if you say you're gay, and Josh was slurring you."

ODB: "but I'm not gay."

Eli: "dude, we can still win the division. you have to be gay!!!"

I don't care what he says as long as he plays in my super bowls this week.....

Random DB I'm gonna #### you up!

OBJ: #####, please. I AM going to #### you.

Sticks and stones, 13. Just come back sicker and harder than they come at you. Get in their head. Gonna be so easy. Slap their ###, get punched, boom! Get 'em thrown out. Troll the #### out of the whole league.

So no one has ever said anything to you to make you act so unreasonable? Never acted with anger physically towards anyone ever for what they said to you?

The sticks and stones saying is stuff they tell you in elementary school for a reason.

I was being...facetious. Absurdist humor. I'm sorry, was there a question in there? I've decked people for mouthing off when I was young & dumb. Now? I would laugh uproariously & buy them a drink.

OBJ? Well, he hurt his team. But I understand what it's like to lose your cool. Not condoning, just saying I have a temper. Haven't completely lost it & gone ape#### like OBJ yesterday, but I get it.

It's like when Zinedine Zidane head butted that guy. Stupidest thing ever. But nobody ever said something like that about my sister either.

when are suspensions typically announced? are we going to have to wait til tomorrow to find out the official word?
When Goodell is good n ready.

I think it's known that he's out a game. Coughlin finished up his presser and was to meet privately with ODB. I assume he wanted to tell him before announcing

hopefully he appeals and can at least play this week.....

I see a lot of "ODB" that is not the same guy as OBJ. :)

I think I said it too. ODB = is a dead rapper that stole shoes from a store in VA, allegedly. It's easy to do, was talking to a fellow employee and said it then I was like wait it's not ODB! Anyway, carry on.

So ODB thought that Carolina players were going to bust out baseball bats in the middle of the game and beat him?

What was his Wonderlic score?

The point isn't that Norman was going to hit him with a bat, it's that Norman and the Panthers were instigators here. Even on the Beckham blindside, Norman started it off with a massive slap upside the head.

If Beckham gets suspended, Norman needs to get suspended too.

Times like these remind me that we celebrate fights in ice hockey, but act like babies when some thing like this happens in the NFL, a game built on violence.
