WR Sammy Watkins, BAL (1 Viewer)

The problem is Goff, not Watkins. He missed him again on another deep route against the Rams. He's not being targeted and Goff's deep passes are off the money.

During the Bye week McVay would have most def wathced what the raiders did with Copper. Seeing as he takes all the best stuff he sees from other OCs will we see Sammy get some of the same treatment?

 
Swung a trade earlier this week in which the other guy made me take Watkins.  My first thought was to drop him immediately for someone from the Breida/Mack/Ekeler collection, but so far haven't pulled the trigger.  I'm hoping Watkins has as much a chance of gaining value quickly as those guys.

 
I'm debating starting Watkins over Demaryius Thomas. 

FWIW, Dodds and Tremblay have DT projected higher, Bloom has Watkins higher.

 
I am debating between him and Garcon in my Flex spot (Starting Hopkins/M.Thomas/D.Thomas already). With Garcon neck injury concerns and the DNP yesterday plus facing Peterson for Aiz his celing may be about what Watkins may achieve this weekend. Will have to see if Garcon practices in full before the end of the week if I go with Watkins.....

I'm really high on Sammy this week.

As already mentioned, coming off of a bye and Jenkins out. Last game he was smothered by Patrick Peterson but I saw a play when the redzone cut to the Ram game that convinced me he still has it. He put a great move on Peterson that got him open toward the end zone and Goff missed him.

The Rams have got to figure this out, he is still a top 5-10 NFL WR.

 
As much as it was great to see him score that 60yd TD, he still only has two targets in a 48 pt blowout. He's still acting as the 4th or 5th option and decoy on a very efficient offense even after the bye week.

Oh yeah, I am likely trying to trade him in redraft as a throw in on a bigger deal 

 
It is tough to argue with the Ram offense working so well but the lack of involving Sammy is quite a mystery. They seem to be treating him like a one trick long ball pony, he is a complete stud WR.

 
Ok. So what's the deal with him?

is he not studying the playbook?

does he have something going on behind the scenes that has him barely involved on 2 teams?

of course, he was on my bench today.

It's hard to criticize anything, the Rams are playing great football.

I think 2 things.

#1. He is a great decoy for the offense. Everyone else is great because Sammy drags the opposing D's best corner out in the middle of nowhere 20, 30 yards downfield.

#2. I think Goff is still hesitant to throw the ball deep. Conflating the issue is that he doesn't really ever need to BECAUSE OF Sammy.

Other "great" WRs take the best opposing DB and still put up stats. More than 2 targets. Something just smells fishy. Especially with the offense lighting it up so much. When have we ever seen another supposedly-future-stud WR get so little attention from his QB. Just bizarro world.

Sometimes that is true but other times it isn't. Over the years, there have been lots of times the Julio, Dez, Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson,Terrell Owens, etc, etc, etc, have gone stretches (entire seasons, basically) where they seemed to be nothing except a decoy.  It happens all the time: You've got, say Julio and your opponent has AJ Green.  You spend all day watching Green being peppered with targets and the Bengals looking as if they actually practiced all week on how to use their star. Meanwhile, you watch 4 or 5 other guys get all the catches and Julio goes 4/47 or something.  

Remember when Jimmy graham used to get used like that and Travis Kelce didn't?  The NFL is a funny business where coaches think too much instead of just doing what they should about 80% of the time. I think they do it to justify the mystique of the job. How in the world has Andy Reid somehow ignored every single great RB he has ever had at times? It happens.  

Its what makes those brief windows of time when coaches have it and actually use it that make Antonio Brown, Arian Foster, Marshall Faulk, and guys like that so special when they are in that sweet spot.  Unfortunately, that is far and few between these days.

Tough to produce when you have 31 targets thru 8 games or whatever it is. WTF!? He's on pace for 60 targets this year FFS. I don't get it.

Its a combination of things.

The Rams have been able to build early leads in a lot of their games so far and they have been running the ball well. They have also faced a lot of difficult secondaries so far, Seattle, Jacksonville then Arizona before the bye.

Watkins isn't being used as a high volume WR. The Rams have Kupp and Woods doing that and Goff is taking the match ups against teams 3rd corners which usually isn't Watkins.

The Rams are 6-2 and no reason to change what has been working for them. Negative game scripts might force them into passing the ball more instead of being pretty balanced in pass to run ratio.

I was convinced that the bye was going to help Watkins turn around his season (and it appeared to be right for a while on Sunday).  Fortunately for me I traded Watkins away on Thursday as a throw in to the other guy to help fill a bye need. Win-Win for both of us.

:shrug: At some point you have to wonder if he's really a stud when multiple teams have treated him like a one trick pony.

That's exactly what I'm implying as well (yes, still bitter I chose Watkins over Evans with the 1.1 that year).

I know the examples given earlier of AJ Green and other true stud WRs disappearing or being shut down for stints of time was given but, come on, would this Rams offense be any different without Watkins right now? Would they even notice if he wasn't on the field? And those other stud WRs can beat the other team's top CBs some percentage of the time. Watkins just isn't proving to be the difference maker I had hoped he would be to replace my aging WRs in dynasty.

Not as bad as TRich with my 1.1, but a close 2nd :(

That's working so well that there's no real reason to change it. 

Teams put their best defender on Watkins and he either pulls that guy out deep or he beats him deep, creating an open pass in the middle of the field or an open pass deep in the field for Watkins. 

If I were the Rams OC, I wouldn't change a damn thing either.

I see a lot of great OC's using elite (allegedly) WRs as decoys.  

AB, Julio, Evans... you like to see those guys average less than 2 catches a game.  They are much better off just keeping a defender busy while the lesser players on the team produce.

 
He has a great matchup this week against the Texans. We all saw what another disappointing fantasy WR (TY Hilton) did to them yesterday. Maybe Sammy is in for a similar performance.

 
Jared Goff is only in his second season. I can understand him with the coaches guidance not forcing the ball to Watkins against the defenses best corner.

Sucks for fantasy but it does make some sense.

Based on what I have seen of Watkins in college he is more than just a deep threat, but that is the main thing two NFL teams have asked him to do I think. I used to think this was because of Tyrod Taylor, but can't really say this anymore.

 
The game where Watkins suffered a concussion, he most certainly was not used as a one trick pony. Dude was all over the field making plays. 

 
Cool that it went for a long score I guess, but it's another 1-catch game.

Almost impossible to envision this guy becomes startable in 2017.
