WR Sammy Watkins, BAL (1 Viewer)

Yep - week 12 year 4 is a good time to start thinking about building a rapport.
Year 4 building the rapport?

Not with Goff it isn't. We're not talking about whether he can handle the pro game, we're talking about his chemistry with a QB he has 3 months with.

I do agree he should be doing better.

Right - it isn't like a rookie has chemistry with the guy.  It isn't like another first year WR from the Bills has chemistry with Goff.

Wait.

I assume the rookie wr and QB at least looked at the play book over the summer.  Even then, kupp and Watkins are performing fairly equally in different roles. Woods has been the guy there, although he doesn't have years with Goff either.

I was reading in an article about Case Keenum a stat that ESPN measures called QB aggressiveness, which is how often a QB will throw to a receiver that is covered.

Jared Goff and Alex Smith are two of the least aggressive QBs this year according to this. Watkins keeps drawing the best coverage, and it has been a bit of a murderers row of corner backs he has faced. so I think this explains somewhat how infrequently he is targeting Watkins.

I just listened to a podcast with Greg Cosell who I think is one of the best NFL film analyzers around and gave me reason to think Sammy still has it.

He mentioned that in film watching he sees Watkins getting open quite a bit but as the X receiver in the Rams offense Goff is currently not going through his progressions long enough to find him. Between that, McVay being a smart football mind, Sammy drawing tough CB matchups, and Woods out I'm still keeping the faith,

Heard that too.

Do they move Sammy into Wood's spot or keep him on the backside?

or they start targeting the X. Can Sammy play all positions at WR?

I believe Watkins can play any of the WR positions. The X is likely more difficult than the other two, so its more that Kupp and Woods are not as good at X as Watkins is. The side end has to play on the line more than the slot and flanker.

In the game against the Vikings they had Watkins in the slot with Woods outside on the right and they got Watkins open that way for the first play of the game. This was I think a little bit different than what they had been doing previously. I was a little bit concerned with them doing more of that all game and possibly getting Watkins matched up on Alexander or Newman that way.

I didn't see too much more of Watkins in the slot after that first drive, but it is something they can do. The only issue they may have with doing that is who is going to play the X and Kupp perhaps better from the slot as well. They want to play their best players and put them in positions where they can all have success.

They already mentioned Josh Reynolds will play more with Woods out, he has been Watkins back up. He has strengths to go up and get the ball that fits the role of the X WR position well I think, he just needs to be able to beat the jam as he will be on the line more. If they do have Reynolds play more then this frees up Watkins to play more at the Z where Woods has been and also the slot.

I think Goff has to be getting his confidence back finally. Last year was a dumpster fire and people were slagging him off. He been surprisingly effective despite a modest upgrade at the WR position. He's getting comfortable with his coach, system and the style of play in the NFL. in effect, he's growing up. I would expect next year to be that year where the training wheels come off.

Agreed.

This is kind of like Goffs rookie season considering the coaching he had last year.

I do think the WR are upgraded a lot and Whitworth at left tackle an even bigger upgrade. Sullivan at center helps too. Aside from the personnel upgrades it is more about the improved coaching though I think.

Understandable for Goff to be trying to play cautious as he can right now. Even experienced QBs would avoid the match ups that Watkins has been facing.

If Watkins doesn't put up numbers, and have >5 targets, with Woods out, I'm giving up.

(And by "giving up" I mean "holding him and keeping him on my bench as usual". ;)  )

With both JuJu and Shepard hurt, and Jordy unstartable for weeks, welcome to the starting line up as my WR3, former 1.01 rookie pick.

He had a pretty solid game. It would have been much better (150-ish, 3TDs) if Goff weren't so inaccurate on several of the targets and that great play by the DB at the very end of the game.

He did great even without the stats. More of a real life value than fantasy in the way he was drawing PI's on those deep shots all game. You just hope Goff can develop that deep ball if Watkins sticks around for the future.

I'm in re-draft... can care less about the future. Right now, Goff is holding Watkins back, big time.

Talent has never been an issue. It's been health and opportunity. He'll easily put up WR1 numbers if he gets into a situation where he gets 140+ targets

Who is starting Sammy today? Keep going back and forth between him and Mike Davis.

i started dede and henry over him. kinda didn't matter but i somehow won anyway. (thanks CJ!)

but he's in my lineup now with henry likely out. and despite his turd season, this will be his third start in a championship for me. so even though he wasn't a huge part of my team this year, i kinda have to play him now! it feels icky but i'm not gonna lie: i am having the occasional day dream of a vintage 150 & 2 from sam the man...

Rams GM Les Snead confirmed the team wants to re-sign Sammy Watkins.

"I know this – going from 32nd to first in offense, Sammy was a big part of it down the stretch," Snead said. "A goal of ours is to keep that [wide receiver] group together because a lot of our weapons are 25 and under." Watkins caught just 39 passes for 593 yards his first season with the Rams, but he did find the end zone eight times and, perhaps most importantly, stayed healthy. ESPN's Alden Gonzalez reports the team will tag Watkins if they cannot reach a long-term deal.

I'm ambivalent about this news. Watkins is so disappointing and tough to gauge when to actually start him, that I am just viewing him as an upside WR4 on my bench for bye weeks and searching for other answers for the "future of my WR corps". Sad state for my former 1.1 pick.

In redraft, I would need to get a very good price, but I'm buying where possible in keeper/ dynasty.  He had 6 touchdowns in his last 8 games.  The cost is finally low enough compared to the potential upside to make him a strong buy for me.

I agree he is a good buy if you can get him for a price below the top 50 or so players. Which seems possible depending on how much the current Watkins owner has soured on him.

Some things to consider as far as his outlook if he stays with the Rams.

Free agent WR generally put up better numbers in their 2nd season with the new team than their first. Goff is going into his 3rd season, when a lot of QBs show statistical improvement. He will be in the same system for the second season now and the skill players know the system now as well. I think that adds up to some growth and improvement across the board.

Question is if Goff gets Watkins the ball on a higher percentage of the opportunities or not. I do think Watkins faced the more difficult coverage assignment and extra attention from safety double teams. More experience and timing with Watkins could lead to him having a higher share of the targets in 2018.

The other possibility is that Watkins goes to another team where he becomes their primary weapon. Then learning the new system and QB process begins again with the outlook being improvement in 2019 with that team.

In the WSLs over in the Mock Draft forum, he went WR35 and WR31 respectively. His ADP - and these are full-PPR leagues - was 79th overall.

I knew he had fallen out of favor, but that seems ... extreme.

Obviously the chance that 2018 will mark his third team in three years dampens the appeal for me, but if his situation somehow remains stable, I'll be buying with both hands at those prices.

I pray he doesn’t go back to the Rams. Just didn’t work with Goff. Sure it’ll be better with an off-season but looks like wr3 as his absolute ceiling next year.

Just please don’t let it be the Jets or browns.
