WR/TE JJ Arcega-Whiteside, SEA (1 Viewer)

I cut him Wednesday and picked up Ward in dynasty this week. No one has picked him up.
Same here, cut him in 2 leagues. Bummer as last preseason when he looked good I got a couple of offers for him (2nd round pick type deals) and held thinking he'd develop. You win some you lose some.

It’s pretty simple at this point… The Eagles have one healthy wide receiver. If there ever was a time for JJAW shine, it would be right now.

some receivers get stuck behind superior talent for years and never get this kind of opportunity.

i’m saying it: bust

Why Eagles’ Aaron Moorehead says J.J. Arcega-Whiteside is in ‘great place’ entering training camp

J.J. Arcega-Whiteside’s NFL career hasn’t gone as planned.

He’s made mistakes and suffered through multiple injuries, and his production has been lackluster as a result. But, Eagles wide receiver coach Aaron Moorehead thinks there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.

Tuesday, Moorehead said Arcega-Whiteside’s forgettable second season was largely due to a bout of bad luck.

“It felt like every time he was doing good, he’d get dinged up,” Moorehead said. “He’d come back, get dinged up again, and then all of sudden you look, and the season is over.”

Arcega-Whiteside dealt with a lingering calf injury during the first half of the season. He was also placed on the COVID-19reserve list for two games during the second half of the campaign.

Arcega-Whiteside appeared in just eight games, catching four passes for 85 yards. Those results followed his underwhelming rookie season, which had Eagles fans claiming he was a bust after just 16 games.

“J.J. was able to block out that (social media) noise last year, and that was great for him mentally,” Moorehead said. “He just caught the injury bug.”

Once again, Arcega-Whiteside will need to compete for playing time at the bottom of the roster, despite being a 2019 second-round pick.

The 6-foot-2, 225-pound wideout is one of the few receivers who can be a jump-ball target in the red zone. Under a new coaching staff, Arcega-Whiteside has a clean slate and a familiar position coach who thinks he can finally make good on the Eagles’ gamble to select him two years ago.

“J.J. would be the first one to tell you that last year was not good,” Moorehead said. “But, J.J. is in a great place right now, playing good ball. He had a good three weeks here with us. (I’m) excited to see where J.J. can put himself this year.”

Moorehead said Arcega-Whiteside is among the receivers who can play all three positions, working both outside spots and in the slot. That versatility should help Arcega-Whiteside, as new head coach Nick Sirianni wants his wideouts to be able to move around the formation.

Arcega-Whiteside will need to outduel the likes of Quez Watkins, John Hightower, Greg Ward and Jhamon Ausbon to earn a job on the 53-man roster. Moorehead is looking forward to that competition in training camp.

“This is a good room,” Moorehead said. “This is a young room, and they are going to be fighting their butts off for roster spots this year.”

Eagles Notebook: J.J. Arcega-Whiteside vs. Travis Fulgham

PHILADELPHIA – It may not happen, but just want to get everyone ready in case it does, because the majority of Eagles fans won’t like it.

J.J. Arcega-Whiteside could make the 53-man roster over Travis Fulgham.

Arcega-Whiteside has had a better camp, but then that’s been his MO in his first two summers since being picked in the second round of the 2019 draft. Then, when the season begins, he vanishes.

A new staff, a new chance?

Fulgham seems to be taking the opposite approach. He had a nice flurry of games in 2020 then was parked on the bench after Alshon Jeffery returned to health, but has not had a particularly consistent camp, struggling again on Tuesday in one-on-one drills against the Patriots, a drill that is heavily slanted toward the WR.

For the second day in a row, Fulgham had some difficulty getting separation.

Meanwhile, Arcega-Whiteside had a strong Tuesday and can play both the slot and outside. Fulgham’s slot reps, if he has gotten any, haven’t been noticeable.

“Me and J.J. talk all the time,” said fellow WR Greg Ward. “He’s a guy that can play inside and outside, very versatile. He’s very hungry. He has a big frame so he can move guys out of the way. He can make the big catch, strong hands and that’s the guy you would love to play with, the type of guy you need out on the field.”

The Eagles have four WRs secure in a roster spot: DeVonta Smith, Jalen Reagor, Quez Watkins, and Greg Ward.

They will likely keep five and maybe six depending on how heavy or light they go at running back and tight end.

That leaves, Arcega-Whiteside, Fulgham, Andre Patton, John Hightower, who returned to team drills after being out for a week with an injury, Jhamon Ausbon, and Marken Michel battling for a precious few jobs.

JJ Arcega-Whiteside (ankle) was sidelined for Wednesday's practice.

Arcega-Whiteside was not targeted while playing 14 snaps against the Falcons in Week 1. He was operating as the Eagles' fourth receiver alongside Greg Ward. If he's unable to play in Week 2 against the 49ers, Quez Watkins will see a full complement of snaps with Ward taking the field infrequently.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports Eagles WR JJ Arcega-Whiteside is converting to tight end.

Per reporter Jeff McLane, Arcega-Whiteside is "embracing the transition." It is an overdue Hail Mary attempt after the 2019 second-rounder caught just six balls across 24 games the past two seasons. Simply not an NFL-level athlete at the receiver position, it is unlikely but not impossible that JJAW might have some untapped Logan Thomas/Darren Waller-style upside up the seam. Both those tight end converts are much larger at 6-foot-6, with JJAW lacking people-moving size at 6-foot-2. He will have to flash potential as a "move" option in offseason workouts. We are not holding our breath.

I share their skepticism. Might throw a 5th at him.

Eagles TE JJ Arcega-Whiteside said he added 12 pounds this offseason.

Arcega-Whiteside is now up to 237 pounds as part of his switch to tight end. Drafted as a receiver in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, JJAW has logged just six catches over the past two seasons. At 6'2, even the extra weight won't be enough to make him an every-down player at tight end. However, he could leverage his pass-catching skills to exploit coverage mismatches against linebackers at his new position. The move is undoubtedly a long-shot, but something needed to change for the once-hyped receiver.

Eagles traded TE JJ Arcega-Whiteside to Seattle for DB Ugo Amadi.

No word yet on if Arcega-Whiteside will keep being a TE or WR in Seattle, but it seems like Seattle's more stacked at TE. Amadi was rumored to be a cut candidate earlier today, but instead heads to Philadelphia as a depth safety/corner. Amadi finished with a brutal 41.2 PFF coverage rating in 2021, but was better in 2020 and has some bounce-back potential.
