WR Tyrell Williams, DET - 9.22.21 - Concussion - Unlikely To Play Week 3 (3 Viewers)

Perriman had a career high 69 targets with the Bucs a few years ago. Williams topped that once, 5 years ago when he was 24 and Keenan Allen tore his ACL WK1.

Hock will have a 20-21% market share this year. Swift / Williams are in line for a similar share of targets (85-90/45-50 split.)

Neither FA journeyman fits this quarterback in terms of route tree. Neither stood out at veteran minicamp in terms of observed plays or coaches comments. The Athletic thinks catching one TD in 7-on-7 non-contact drills is an indication he’s building a rapport. Most local beats wrote that play up as a half sentence (or ignored it) and focused on the consistent drumbeat of accolades being heaped on Cephus, Raymond, and ARSB. All of which means bubkis, the purpose of 7-on-7s is to install the offense and defenders are at a serious disadvantage by design.

Amon-Ra has been building a rapport on and off the field and has the coaches attention. St Brown has the skills and routes that match what Goff does best. Won’t be a boundary receiver but will be in the slot when they run 11 formations (66% last year, 71-74% previous two.)

I think Slot is his to lose.

Would not be shocked if Cephus or Chad Hansen or one of the bazillion UDFAs on the 90-man starts at the X or the Z. They’re not beholden to either of the vets on 1-year deals. Between the draft (2 first rounders) and FA they’ll add the alpha WR next year.

He played under Lynn in 2017-2018:

  • 2017 - 16 games, 69 targets, 43/728/4 receiving = 8.737 ppg in standard PPR = WR58
  • 2018 - 16 games, 65 targets, 41/653/5 receiving = 8.613 ppg in standard PPR = WR64
And that was in an offense with a lot of others for the defense to focus on (WR Allen, RBs Gordon and Ekeler, TE Henry) and with a better QB (Rivers >> Goff).

I'm skeptical.
LAC Defense was better than DET Def today, so lots more Garbage Time play involved.

Also, Allen was clearly the Prime WR1 Target and the distribution was skewed.

I believe in Det, Tyrel should be close to "First Read" with TJ Hock.

If projections are close to 600 passes, Tyrel could see significantly more targets than his time in LAC.

Been hearing Boldin's name quite a bit.  My speculation for targets is:

Amon-Ra

Williams

Cephus

Boldin

Perriman has bounced around too much.  No reason to believe this time he has changed.   Williams is better than you think.   Boldin will stick as a return man, but the Lions will take advantage of his separation skills as a sneaky weapon.  Cephus had a decent rookie year and will be a reliable target.

Tyrell Williams caught 2-of-3 targets for 14 yards in the Lions' Week 1 loss to the 49ers.

Williams was signed in the offseason to be Detroit's default No. 1 wideout, but this offense is going to operate through T.J. Hockenson and its running backs. Williams also had to leave this one after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit. He's not a fantasy option ahead of a Week 2 date with the Packers.
Thread should be renamed @Redmen62

Tyrell Williams (concussion) has been ruled out for Week 2 against the Packers.

Even with an extra day to get cleared, Williams was always a long shot to play in Monday night's game. The Lions will turn to Kalif Raymond, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Quintez Cephus in three-wide sets. With Williams out, T.J. Hockenson is one of the top tight end plays of Week 2.

No fantasy impact WRT to the wideouts but bad info here.

  1. Trinity Benson, acquired in a late PS trade with Denver, will start outside with Raymond. Cephus remains the WR4 with ARSB dominating the slot snaps.
  2. Feel good story Tom Kennedy - professional lacrosse player who switched to football - likely gets a call up from the practice squad. Not much to see there IMO but he’s a favorite of MCDC & Anthony Lynn.
  3. Hock is a top TE play every week, regardless.
  4. None of this matters bc Jared Goff cannot complete passes downfield. His first completion which travelled 15 yards past the LOS came with 1:18 left Week 1.
  5. The Lions are starting two rookie Cornerbacks. Start any Packer you have shares in.
  6. Playing from behind, Hock, Swift & Jamaal (pretty much the entirety of Detroit’s “passing attack”) should by necessity see a lot of targets again.

It’s an interesting case study. He went to Berkley, scored 36 on the Wonderlic - he’s no dummy. Its not a blind spot. He talks about how he knows it’s unacceptable to continually take what the defense gives you. He’s mad at himself for being content with flats and flares and curls. It’s a splash play league and he consistently fails to take shots downfield.

Yet seemingly he cannot.

He doesn’t have the cannon Stafford possesses but he’s a capable guy. When he was going to B2B Pro Bowls, Cooks, Kupp and Woods all averaged over 14 YPC. He was an excellent deep ball passer 3-4 years ago.

What is that? Did McVey rise him so much he lost his confidence? It’s vexing.

what is read was that his arm started fading while he was with the Rams & he became less accurate on deeper passes.

So it’s a bit of a mixed bag - if that reporting is accurate, he can throw deep, just not with the accuracy that McVay wanted/needed for his offense.

Tyrell Williams (concussion) has been ruled out for Week 3 against the Ravens.

Williams missed Week 2 while dealing with the same injury and will now be eying a Week 4 return at best. Kalif Raymond, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Quintez Cephus should see the bulk of Detroit's snaps in three-receiver sets. With little receiving talent to fall back on, Jared Goff will continue to pepper T.J. Hockenson with targets. The third-year tight end trails only Darren Waller in targets this year and enters Week 3 as a top-three fantasy option at his position.

Did the Raiders trade with DET? If not, this topic title needs a refresh. lol

That's the problem with the megathreads and why I hate them. They require constant monitoring by a moderator.

Still working on a better solution but the current model with archived giant threads and out of date titles is pretty bad.

For instance, if nothing happens with Williams and this thread isn't updated next week, it'll look stupid in a couple of weeks.

I guess so for others. I tend to think it's less funny when it's me looking like the idiot.

Which is what these threads do quickly if we don't have someone monitoring them constantly.
Fair point.

So far things have gone pretty smoothly this season.  Personally I love the interface redesign, and find it much easier to find things (and I don’t have to squint to see them).

Lions placed WR Tyrell Williams (concussion) on injured reserve.

It's a frightening situation for Williams, who was ruled out for Sunday's game against Baltimore mid-week. He'll be eligible to return in Week 6 against the Eagles if cleared from the league's protocol and at full strength by that time. Quintez Cephus has stepped in for Williams of late, accruing 12 targets — the most among Detroit's wide receivers — over the last five quarters. He remains a thin FLEX option that could continue to provide value in garbage time.

waived by Detroit today. blurb on CBS:

The Lions waived Williams (concussion) on Friday with an injury settlement.

Williams was expected to serve as the Lions' No. 1 wideout coming out of the preseason, but his reign atop the depth chart lasted just three quarters into the campaign, as he's been sidelined since suffering a concussion in Detroit's Week 1 loss to San Francisco. Considering that Williams hadn't even been cleared to resume practicing since landing on injured reserve Week 3, the wideout seemingly has multiple steps to clear in the concussion protocol before he'll explore signing with another team.
