WR Tyrell Williams, DET - 9.22.21 - Concussion - Unlikely To Play Week 3 (1 Viewer)

Tyrell is not an uber talent but when he has had opportunity he has been a productive fantasy player. Looks like he is going to have opportunity as the best WR on the Raiders atm.

 
I think you will see a few players take on ABs targets.  JJ Nelson will take the top off the defenses.  Renfro will be used in the slot and over the middle.  

 
Well, I waited on WRs in my redraft so I'm taking a flyer.

Although I think Waller, Richard & probably Renfrow will be the primary beneficiaries of AB losing his mind.

 
I don't see Waller staying healthy playing TE.  He had health issues when he played WR, and TE is the most often-injured position in fantasy. 

I think everyone else gets a big bump in terms of their share of the pie, but it might result in the pie getting smaller as well. 

 
I got Williams in trade as what I viewed more as a throw-in at the time (this was before he signed w/ OAK).  I would have preferred others WRs more at that time, but Williams sealed the deal and I wanted the other pieces in the trade more so I didn't fight it.  He was then even on my short list of cuts to make room for rookie picks since I couldn't find a trade partner for him.  I'm sometimes the most glad about decisions I don't make, happen or fight for.

I think Williams will do well on sheer volume, but not sure how well he’ll thrive as the #1 option when defenses key on him. Much like Boyd struggled more when AJ Green wasn’t across from him.

The funny thing is that is what he seems to do best - catch the ball in traffic.   He is a big, fast target.  I am curious to see what he does with volume.  I am really hoping that JJ Nelson is able to demand some safety help.  He has the speed to take the top off.  IF Nelson can command safety help deep, IF Josh Jacobs is effective at all, THEN Williams could thrive IMO. 

The question to me is whether Williams can improve his numbers with volume. If so, his ceiling would be closer to the top of the WR2s. Especially given his redzone usage.   

 
Was offered Tyrell in a dynasty this morning for my Mark Andrews today out of the blue after the Brown cut news.Like Andrews a lot but took it as I had Engram as my TE1.

He did pretty well in 2016 when he was the Chargers #1 option, of course Carr is no Rivers, but I do think Williams has been unfairly thought of as a deep threat, just because of how the Chargers used him once Keenan Allen was healthy.

Of course, its entirely possible the offense overall is just awful and drags everyone down. Williams is an interesting WR5, with WR3 potential.

 
i understand the massive potential but can anyone explain to me quickly why the chargers never gave him a chance or why he never thrived with them? i know they have keenan allen but other than that it was always a jumbled mess of guys - i distinctly remember picking up ty and him flopping while D inman grabbed 4 for 100+ - what was the deal in SD - why did he not solidify himself from the pack - was a JAG

Keenan Allen, that’s why. In ‘16, I think it was, when Allen was injured, TyWill had 1000+ yards and like 7 TDs iirc.

I read he was working with Keenan Allen’s route running coach & how he was learning to slow down in order to make better cuts & I got very excited about him as a sleeper.

He was dirt cheap at auction & he’s my WR5. I’m pretty sure  i’ll get better value than that out of him.

He didn’t have high draft capital.  He was a flyer for the chargers that worked out.  But they drafted Allen and drafted mike Williams.   Tyrell was in the mix though as a rotational player and always made plays for rivers.  Rivers liked and trusted him.  Just wasn’t enough football to go around to make him a yearly 1000 yard wr.  He’s also a very soft spoken and humble guy and we all know that squeaky wheel gets the grease.

They gave him a huge chance in 2016 when multiple other WRs were lost for the season to injury. Tyrell broke out, but he also showed inconsistency and flaws in his game. In the next 2 seasons, Allen was back, and the Chargers had several other quality targets as well. The team did not have to force it to him like they did in 2016, so they didn't. Simple as that.

It will be interesting to see how he handles the WR1 role this season. He has an opportunity to show that he has improved on those flaws that were evident with the Chargers, and he has a lot of money at stake. I own him in both of my dynasty leagues, so I hope he is a top 25 WR this season and going forward.

I agree with your assessment in that he had a lot of flaws that season.  When Allen returned, Tyrell went and worked with K Allen's personal coach to improve.  If he saw his flaws and worked on improving, this was a good sign of him developing and offers a higher ceiling.  Now in OAK as WR1, I am not sure he is best suited.  But at the same time, he will get volume.  Rookie Jacobs will get his touches and Carr will have to see what the Def offers...  Tyrell will increase in Fantasy value with AB gone, but only to WR32-35 range IMO.  I see him in range with Pettis or Jeffery.  

 
This guy looked electric and, more importantly, seemed to be Carr’s first read on every play. 

League winner written all over him.

PPR he’s top 20 IMO. 

He put up big numbers tonight in a game that wasn’t competitive. Raiders play the Chiefs twice & the Chargers twice.  

Both of those teams light up the scoreboard & Raiders secondary will keep them throwing the ball to catch up. 

TyWill’s best games are ahead IMO. He’s gonna have some monsters. Especially within his division. KC is a video game & Chargers = 2 revenge games against the team that didn’t want to pay him. 

 
He's always had talent, I'm glad he got to show it off tonight. Sadly, I don't have any shares of him this year, I think he's going to be good value at wherever people scooped him in redrafts.

Not at all. I own him in the majority of my leagues. I am also a Chargers fan, and if he plays enough they will get a 3rd round compensatory pick for him in the 2020 draft, and playing well means playing more snaps. 

My last post on him is on this page. I said that he has a real opportunity and I hope he capitalizes on it. :shrug:

Not only did the Chargers not want to pay him but they didn't want to use him. He was criminally underused there. Once you're in the dog house with Rivers he will throw to a double covered Keenan Allen before a wide open Tyrell Williams streaking down the sideline. 

Ladarius Green was on his way to making SD look silly for not using him too in Pittsburgh but he got hurt. 

SD one of the more overrated FO/coaching staff in the league imo. They seem to always be fighting with their players in contract negotiations. Remember the Bosa fiasco?

Plus they've ignored some really good players on the field. 

 
Tyrell Williams caught 6-of-7 targets for 105 yards and a touchdown in the Raiders' Week 1 win over the Broncos.

Williams had a pair of splash plays, including a 43-yarder where he burned Isaac Yiadom. He also had some success against Chris Harris. With Antonio Brown gone, there’s a lot to like about Williams in an offense that should play most of its games from behind. Williams is a high-upside WR3 for Week 2 against Chiefs.

I scooped him up as an fa after my arch nemesis in my big $ league drafted and dropped him in preseason (before AB drama).  I figured “eh, he can be my w4 with upside.  AB will draw coverage and he can run free in the secondary. Big game here and there”.  

Now my nemesis will never admit it but he is PISSED he dropped him lol   

That said, look at your waiver wires after week 1.  WR is as deep as it ever was this year   Guys like John Ross, marquise brown, as brown, mclaurin, etc   I don’t think these guys are flashes in the pan   

Im happy I have the wr1 for the raiders and I think he is set up to post strong wr2 numbers all season, but the depth at wr this year won’t make him a league winner   

Darren Waller on the other hand...at a position where depth it’s thin as my hair (which is almost non existent trust me).  Now he is a league winner

Brown is the only one of that group not drafted in my leagues. And I have 1.01 waiver priority, so he won’t be a FA for long.

That really almost makes some sense to hear because I was sorta reminded of Terrell Davis watching Waller   Waller always appear to play w/ so much effort?  I'm kinda excited to see what Irv Smith jr for the Vikings brings to the table   But Waller looked solid!

 
How much FAAB budget is Williams worth?  (He was not drafted in my league prior to AB being cut and then was locked until after the game).  I am thin at WR3 and am thinking about 50-60%.  Most of the discussion for Waiver articles is about Marquise Brown and John Ross bc Williams is probably rostered in most leagues.  

Also available - John Brown and Crowder.  Apologies not trying to turn this into Assistant Coach post but think it's worth discussion for waivers.

that's a good amount there, if it were me I'd probably do 30% or so, maybe 40% depending how much I need a WR

Hope you get some good feedback  (I've never played FAAB)  Personally I believe he's more a WR2  Guy hasn't got the recognition that Oakland has given him as a team's #1  So maybe $25 gets it done  I'd go all in though just to make it a done deal   Maybe cause you not feeling it the same you should try 98 which leaves ya two for a what the heck bid?  Guess you could put that other two on Brown even  But again Id be after Tyrell myself
