he truth is out there, and may be coming to us sooner rather than later, as an official series revival of The X-Files looks imminent.

According to sources for UK site TVWise, Fox is coming closer than ever to giving the much-anticipated green light to a revival of the iconic sci-fi series, which ran from 1993 to 2002 and spawned two movies, as well as two short-lived series (Millenium and The Lone Gunmen). If the revival does go ahead, it will be a “short-stack” order, meaning it'll be less than 10 episodes (The Daily Mail claims it’ll be six, but take this with a grain of salt). The site stresses that discussions with Fox are still ongoing, but if The X-Files gets picked up, it'll be a bit like Fox's other hit TV franchise 24, which came back as a 12-episode limited-run series, 24: Live Another Day, just last year.

The X-Files revival series is meant to close some lingering storylines that were left behind when the series ended after nine seasons in 2002, and were also left unresolved -- aka the truth wasn't out there -- in the second X-Files flick, I Want to Believe. So why does Fox want to settle for a short season order? Well, the first reason is story requirements, and the second is scheduling.

Both Gillian Anderson (who is starring in The Fall) and David Duchovny (whose new NBC drama series Aquarius will air this summer) are busy bees, and they need to schedule a block of time when they will be available to film the new X-Files series. Both actors have long said they wanted to return to their iconic roles of FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, and sources reveal they have indeed agreed to come back. Looks like an offer has also gone out to Mitch Pileggi and some other key cast members. Just who will those key cast members be? It's unclear as of now, but it'll be fun to speculate if you guys want to go ahead and chime in in the comments below. TVWise also reports that Chris Carter will, of course, return at the helm and pen the new scripts, as well as executive-produce. If a deal can be reached soon, filming could start as early as this summer.

Apparently Fox may be looking to make a “big announcement” ahead of its upfront presentation in NYC in May. We don't know about you, but we've wanted some new X-Files for a while now, so can we all cross our fingers that it’ll finally happen? Yeah, we want to believe, but remember, trust no one.

How well does this show hold up? I never really watched it when it was out and it was too late to catch up so I just never tried. But i would love to binge watch a show like this in time for the new series.

Good question. I decided to try it a year ago, and watched one episode. I would assume that it would take a long time to really get going, but I have no idea.

But I wonder if statements like the above "creepiest episode in tv history" still ring true, or if it was just creepy at the time, but would appear cheesy now.

Am I the only one who kind of enjoyed The Lone Gunmen?
I remember at the time liking it but would probably hate it now.
Could happen easily.

Wikipedia said it was well-reviewed by critics but canceled due to low ratings. Probably because Fox did their standard "air a new show at a different day/time every week and then complain about low ratings" approach.

I watched it on and off when it was on TV. Went back and tried to binge watch and it's not holding up well in the 1st season. Most annoying part is how most of the show is "monster of the week" with the storyline thrown in every couple of episodes. I think it gets better in later seasons.

I was willing to give it some more time but it was pulled so quickly I never really got a feel for liking/disliking it. I hate when they do that.
I seem to recall it got pulled for having an episode about terrorists hijacking planes and crashing them into important government buildings, which was filmed in early 2001, but had yet to air I think.

I'd watched a few episodes here and there when I was a teenager(late 90's) so I remembered liking it a bit. I just finished rolling through the entire series on netflix a few months ago, a lot of it holds up, and a fair amount doesn't. The last 2-3 seasons are a step down, but it is a pretty good show all around. There are certainly a couple episodes(Home especially) that are very creepy.

I recently started to rewatch the series on Netflix (loved it when it was on) and after episode 6 of season one I stopped. The acting and story lines were pretty bad early on it seems. I will likely pick back up because I am confident that it will/did improve majorly - but if anyone never watched before they may be inclined to bail.

Also add out of order episodes. Its like someone has it on for a show but was forced to air it. So they just sabotage it.

Show still holds up incredibly well IMO. Ironically, its the standalone episodes that hold up even better than the conspiracy episodes - which is funny because the alien/government angle was what made the show so compelling in the first place.

The conspiracy arc, flawed as it my be, was 20 years ahead of its time. The first 3-4 seasons (before the story got too confusing) is still some of the best TV around.

I agree. I don't think it held up very well at all.

I'm freakin' stoked about this. One of my top 3 TV series of all time.

On the subject of how it has held up over time, this doesn't speak to the series as a whole, but it was a funny moment:

I caught an old episode a few months ago. Mulder had the Lone Gunmen hacking into a laptop, when one of them stated, "This laptop has a five megabyte hard drive (dramatic head turn) and it's full."

I'll always remember flipping the TV on and thinking I was watching an episode of cops for a few minutes. Freaked me the hell out until I realized it was actually X-Files. I doubt anyone would remember that episode. I must have turned it on right after the introduction and didn't know it.

Yep. I remember that episode.

The X-Files was also the first place the Vince Gilligan and Brian Cranston worked together. Gilligan was a writer on the show andwrite a bunch of episodes during the series' run. He wrote an episode about a man who had an aneurysm (or something similar, I don't remember the specifics) and was in a speeding car. If the car slowed down, the aneurysm in his head would burst and kill him. Cranston played the man in that one episode. Gilligan enjoyed working with him so much, he immediately thought of him when Breaking Bad was being considered.

Solid episode. Friend-of-a-friend was the "Cops Cameraman" seen in the episode.
Been so long that I can't remember much about it except for some monster attacking them in a house or something. Buddy and I were like "holy ####" until it went to commercial and we realized it wasn't real. I think we were stoned too.

As long as they make another awesome X-Files pinball machine for the show, I'll watch. One of the greatest pinball machines ever.

I remember that episode. Also, Jesse Pinkman appeared in an episode of X-Files. Funny how those things work out.

In.

Watched an episode a few weeks ago, and while it wasn't in HD it held up pretty well for being in a time before cell phones.

Top 5 show all time for me. The syndicate, the smoking man, Skinner, Krychek...great friggin show.

Wasn't a big fan of the Doggett/Reyes seasons, they didn't outright suck but they were no Mulder/Scully. The show didn't need to continue once they left.

Surprised to read in the article that both Anderson and Duchovny wanted to do it again. I had thought I read that they weren't the best of friends and was the reason for him leaving the show.

The Tooms episodes were may favorites, talk about a creepy dude. I tossed all my old X-Files VHS tapes except for those two episodes, sitting up in my attic somewhere.

'The X-Files' Revival Gets 6-Episode Order at FOX, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson to Reprise Iconic Roles

“THE X-FILES” RETURNS TO FOX

Emmy Award-winning Pop Culture Phenomenon

From Chris Carter Is Back as Six-Episode Event Series

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson to Reprise Their Roles as FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully

Thirteen years after the original series run, FOX has ordered the next mind-bending chapter of THE X-FILES, a thrilling, six-episode event series which will be helmed by creator/executive producer Chris Carter with stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson re-inhabiting their roles as iconic FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. This marks the momentous return of the Emmy- and Golden Globe Award-winning pop culture phenomenon, which remains one of the longest-running sci-fi series in network television history.

The announcement was made today by Dana Walden and Gary Newman, Chairmen and CEOs of Fox Television Group and Chris Carter, creator and executive producer of THE X-FILES. Production on THE X-FILES event series is set to begin in summer 2015. Further details remain under wraps and will be announced at a later date.

“I think of it as a 13-year commercial break,” said Carter. “The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.”

“We had the privilege of working with Chris on all nine seasons of THE X-FILES – one of the most rewarding creative experiences of our careers – and we couldn’t be more excited to explore that incredible world with him again,” remarked Newman and Walden. “THE X-FILES was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture – yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning. Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans as THE X-FILES, and we’re ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they’ve been waiting for.”

THE X-FILES originally premiered in September 1993. Over the course of its nine-season run, the influential series went from breakout sci-fi favorite to massive global hit, and became one of the most successful television dramas of all time. The show, which earned 16 Emmy Awards, five Golden Globes and a Peabody Award, follows FBI special agents Scully (Anderson) and Mulder (Duchovny) as they investigate unexplained cases – “X-Files” – for which the only answers involve paranormal phenomena.

I think the show would work great with a 10-12 episode season like the HBO/showtime shows. Could come up with great stories and not be rushed if they were making 20+ episodes a season.

I think that could be said about every show now.
