You gotta tip your hat to Charlie Batch (1 Viewer)

I watched the game, I'm a big phins fan and I have to tip my hat to him. He is one of the better back up QBs in the league...he is in no way a starter in this league, but what a nice QB to bring off your bench. It help and it help on championship runs to have someone you can turn to that will actually help you win.

Buffalo had Frank Reich, NY had Hostetler, Miami had Strock, is Batch in that category? Prob'ly not but he did what he gets paid to do...win football games when called upon. he handled himself like a gentleman after the game, and in no way is thinking he can start for this team.

I hated to see the Steelers win tonight but watching Batch you have to applaud the effort. I am sure there are a lot of teams that would like to have a QB2 like him when thigns happen like they have with Big Ben.

:goodposting: Good observation MOP. As a Bronco fan I remember during Elway's heyday there was this guy named Gary Kubiak who would always come in when John was hurt. He was always a class act afterward and always knew he would never start over Elway. I don't know what that has to do with your post about Batch, but it was the first thing that came into my mind after reading your post. It's refreshing to see guys like this instead of all the greedy "me" people out there.

I am very shocked he played so well. I actually thought they would lose tonight primarily b/c I thought Batch would be mediocre and Culpepper would play well. That certainly was not the case. Kudos to the Stillers and Batch.

Right there with you Colin, I wouldn't have dreamed 3 TDs passing from Charlie Batch. He threw with poise and authority, and threaded some needles tonight. It was a great game for Batch and the Steelers.

Same here. I still don't think he's anything to write home about -- he just had a good game. And as a Miller owner, I thank him for that. :D

I've said before that I thought Batch was a solid NFL QB, even a credible starter, when he was with the Lions. It wasn't poor play that derailed his career in Detroit, just his unwillingness to avoid contact. He took way too many brutal hits that could have been avoided.

I have to tip my hat to Charlie Batch because he did exactly what he's paid to do? And because after one solid performance, he doesn't all of a sudden think he should be the starter for the defending Super Bowl champions? Interesting.

Tip o' the hat to Whisenhut and Cowher as well. They weren't afraid to throw the ball with their backup QB in there. I think Cowher really learned last year that you have to play to win, not just to "not lose."

I'm not so sure that it was Batch's great play more than the average to poor play by Miami's defense.

In any event, Batch didn't choke which is all you hope for with your backup QB.

I'm not sure which impressed me more: Charlie Batch or the Steelers Defense. Both looked very good last night.

I admit I did not expect this good a performance, but I think people were really underestimating how he'd do. He won the games he played in last year and hs been playing all through the pre-season, not coming off the bench after weeks of no snaps. Glad I trusted my instincts to not play Miami D.

Batch is about as solid a backup as you can have in this league, played a great game tonight, but I never thought he would look that good, outstanding performance... :towelwave:

I thought Batch played a super game ... he had great touch on the ball, made excellent decisions all night long, looked very poised throughout ... and when he fumbled down by the goalline ... the announcers mentioned that Ben asked him on the sideline if the pulling guard had disrupted the play, knocking the ball lose .. Batch said "no,I just dropped it" .... gotta love that in a guy!

;)

:goodposting: What a classy post.

I was surprised how well he did. I can't say I wasn't happy about that being a Bengals fan but he had a good game for sure.

Batch, IMO, is the perfect NFL backup QB. He's a veteran guy who has been in the trenches. He's very content being the #2 guy for the team he grew up idolizing. He's very involved in the community and this community loves it's own. He's good enough to step in and win you a game here and there, but not so good that he causes any kind of controversy. I think the Steelers have their veteran #2 guy for many years to come in Charlie Batch. And he has shown Steeler fans the last two years that that's a good thing.

Couldn't agree more.

The list of best backups starts with Hostetler, the only backup to my knowledge to lead his team through the playoffs to a Super Bowl victory.

Do we have a QB controversary in Pittsburgh? It was my understanding that in tribute to Big Ben last night that all Steelers players were going to play without helmets. I guess that rumor was true.

Never would have expected that kind of spelling error from a guy making such an insightful post.

"probably?" He's not even close. He didn't exactly carry the team on his back. If not for the D, a good day by FWP, and MIA's O screwing up even worse, that game was lost. Still might've been if Culpepper was even moderately better. There are worse backups around but cmon...

My favorite bit last night was when Al and John were talking about him being the starter in Detroit then being supplanted by Harrington. Oops. Detroit management just isn't that good is it?

Easy Hoss, I said he probably wasn't. He did complete 60% of his passes and threw 3TD and no Ints. I was simply stating I felt he acted like a leader on the field and his press conference after was handled very well. This guy has come a long way and that's why I don't think QBs that cannot cut it as starters should just get tossed from the league. Batch has learned a lot in a "quality" system as opposed to what he played in at Detroit...and you can see the vast improvement in him and the confidence of Cowher last night.

Batch > Big Ben

What's this I heard about Cowher getting P.O.'ed about Big Ben text messaging on the sidelines last night? I also heard Batch is starting against JAX next week.

Don Strock did pretty well! In the undefeated season he won the majority of games and then went on the road (no home field back then) and won the game leading to the SB where Griese was put back in.

For a guy destined to be behind an XFL QB on Pittsburgh's depth chart, Batch has done pretty well. The wins he participated in last year were critical to the team making the playoffs, and this was an important win as well.

After I tip my cap to Charlie Batch can I give the hat to his mom?

Seriously
