You know what grinds my gears? Spirit Airlines edition. (1 Viewer)

The Busy The Tired

I was supposed to fly out of Orlando to Chicago and the flight departs at 6:35AM. I get to the airport at about 5:50AM.

There's a huge line and I really had to take a dump so I went to the bathroom first and by the time I get through the line it's 2-3 minutes after 6.

I am told that it's too late for me to get on the plane and that boarding time was 5:50AM and there is no way for me to get on the plane.

They ask me if I want to catch the 3PM flight for $100. Are they nuts? So I went online and found a United Flight for $99. Go to the terminal they charge me an extra $50 fee.

So now I'm paying an extra $150 because Spirit has moronic boarding policy. What's United's policy? 30 minutes beforehand.

-.-

I have flown Spirit 6 times in my life. All out of Ft. Lauderdale to Las Vegas (non stop).

Never ever had a single issue other than the planes are uncomfortable (you get what you pay for).

Get to the airport 2 hours before your flight. Always. You will avoid all the BS, get through security, have time to take a nice dump and board with time to spare.

This is surprising, as Spirit is generally late for departures.

I've flown them a few times, it's no frills you get what you pay for. If I'm going somewhere for a long weekend and Spirit flies there, I'm in. Pay for the overhead bag, no big deal and it never leaves my line of sight/don't need to worry about them losing it. Don't need to choose a seat and pay for that, fine by me. Don't need in-flight movies, I have a smart phone and an iPad I can load up with content for a domestic round trip. Don't want an overpriced snack box or meal, either of which served by them would be sub-standard and overpriced, I'll eat after security and allot myself the time to do so. Don't need booze or soda, I can pick up some airplane sized Jack, etc on my way to the airport that can go through security in the 3-1-1 bag and soda past security (security has laughed when they see it come through the x-ray when I've done this). People seem to go total ape #@!$ when Spirit hits them with fees or overcharges for the above items, if you invest the hour or so it'd take to read their rules and compare your needs and wants vs. other airline offerings and their prices, it's a pretty simple evaluation of whether or not choosing Spirit is going to meet your needs or threshold for value vs. taking care of these things yourself.

The only thing I hate about spirit.  Their luggage limit is 40 pounds.  Bringing my clubs has become a pain

Their website says 15 minutes?

Spirit may cancel a reservation or seat assignment for any customer without a boarding pass at least 45 minutes prior to a scheduled departure (60 minutes for international and U.S.V.I. flights). Please be available for boarding at the gate at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled domestic departure and 30 minutes prior to your international departure or you may lose your reservation. In the event of a delay, we recommend that customers remain in the gate area for updates and possible early departures.

I kind of feel like if you fly Spirit Airlines, you lose the ability to complain about your travel experience. Especially if you don't read all of their policies closely beforehand.

I mean, that sucks being there before departure and not being allowed to board, but if their policy is communicated on their website and/or ticketing info, I'm not sure that there is a whole lot of room to complain.

He hadnt even checked in and gotten his boarding pass yet....a half hour before his flight.

All low cost airlines suck. I'd rather pay more than travel with crap loads of kids and old people.

The one and only time I flew frontier the woman next to me got sick and went to the bathroom right before landing. Well she baracaded herself in the bathroom and ended up landing in it. Needless to say she was covered with all different kinds of body fluid when she finally got out of it.  Felt bad for her.

That's terrible but I'm not sure how that has anything to do with the price of the ticket.

lot to unpack here.

1. first time flying?

2. you couldn't pay me enough to admit to flying spirit.  southwest is the limit for me.

OP got to the airport waaay to late.  You should get to the airport at least an hour before your flight--and I try to get there closer to 90 minutes before.  He got there 45 minutes before---which means he should have ran straight into the line and waited. Instead--he probably woke up too late and didn't give himself a chance to go to the bathroom--instead of waiting in line--he first goes to the bathroom--which compounds his late arrival to the airport.  What grinds my gears is people that don't take responsibiity for their own mistakes.   Spirit airlines is guilty of a lot of things--but they are not guilty for you getting to the airport late and having to take a dump. Safe travels.

In fact, if you let security know at the check-in, they will probably take you to the front of the line. I've seen it happen.

That's great info--I wasn't aware of that. If this is the case--that is even more reason why it is the fault of the OP.  That would have been another thing that he failed to do in order to get to the boarding area on time.

Yea, ridiculous to get there only 45 mins before your flight. With security nowadays, 1 1/2 hours early MINIMUM is the smart thing.

Not the airlines fault

Missed a wedding because of Spirit. On a Saturday a few years ago Had a noon flight out of Fort Myers to Detroit landing at 2:30. Wedding was at 5:30

Was at the airport early checked and ready to go. Then we hear flight will be delayed 30-60 minutes as the plane has a mechanical problem..no big deal still plenty of time. Then about an hour later they come back and say our plane will not be flying.  The flight that just left Atlanta to Detroit will unload and fly right back to Fort Myers to pick us up. Spirit only has one plane available??  That plane lands in Fort Myers at 6:30pm but wait..the flight crew can`t fly because they have been flying since 5am...so we are flying another crew in from Atlanta to fly the plane to Detroit. They land around 8:30pm and by the time the get situated and we board we take off after 9pm.  Land in Detroit at 11:30 and drive straight to the reception in our shorts and Ts and got last call at the bar at 11:55.   Every there was trashed by that point or ready to leave. so it was impossible to even communicate with anyone.

During the flight the attendants kept saying to all of us "This airline is so ####ed up"  They never offered us a voucher, upgrade, hell they even charged for the dam peanuts. The money I saved flying Spirit I spent at the Fort Myers airport eating and drinking all day.   Never again..

They're the worst. I always fly Delta or United when I go back to MI, have never had anything but bad experiences with Spirit. There was a study that cited them as having the most complaints of any airline.

Never knew how good Northwest was until they were gone. It was a major benefit having a major airline with Detroit as a main hub.

At MPS if you're not 1 1/2 hour early you're taking a risk especially if you dont have pre-check.  Minneapolis security lines are always long.

I dont recommend doing this however one way to be guarenteed to get to the front of the line is request a wheel chair.  They are immediately escorted through security and then pushed to your gate.  Awful thing to do but if you're late and have no morals go for it.

If you got to the airport at 5:50 and there was a huge line, how did you take a dump and still get through the line by 6:03?

Next time, go straight onto the plane and then take a dump.  You can use the bathrooms while other people are boarding.

People laugh when I say this.  Spirit airlines is the best airline in America.

You need to be an experienced traveler (i.e.:not show up 45 min before a flight) and you need to be educated on the rules.  Don't be afraid to pay the extra $60 for the big seat up front roundtrip and don't put an anvil in your bag and it's all good.

Something is not adding up here....How did they load a plane and shut the door in 12-13 minutes?  What kind of jag off front desk person does not let a checked in passenger on plane 32 minutes before scheduled departure.  I am guessing your time frame is a bit off.

My last two flights (13 hours to Vietnam and 5 hours from DC to LAX) have featured puking kids.  Yet another reason why I hate kids.

Serves you right for flying Spirit Airlines.

Also, if I arrive to the airport 45 minutes before departure (assuming this is a domestic flight), I'm running to the gate because I know the rules, not taking my time taking a #### in a disgusting airport cesspool.
