I am not a Young fan at all. His passing is awful and he's not as fast as Vick, nor is his arm strentgh as good. I don't think he will become anything special in the NFL.

I completely disagree.

His passing is not awful. It's just a different throwing motion.

Who cares if he's as fast as Vick? Nobody is.

Who cares if he can throw as hard as Vick? From what I've seen, Young actually can throw a pass with touch. Vick seems incapable of such a feat.

And Young looks to have leadership skills that Vick does not.

But it's okay if you disagree.

I'm not even mentioning his throwing motion - don't care about that at all.

I mentioned his speed because he's a scrambling QB and his rushing TD's are an important part of his game. I would not regard him as an accurate passer at all - far from it.

I don't particularly like Vick, I just think they are somewhat comparable.

As for leadership - maybe he has it but if he's as thick as people say then he won't gain the respect of his team-mates when he can't remember half the playbook which will be harder than a college playbook.

Vick is a poor man's Vick! I think Young will be a better NFL QB than Vick who is nothing more than a rb playing the QB position. He has a strong arm that does nothing if you can't hit your receivers. Anyone can dump off to their rbs and te.

I still feel Vick has something in him to become better. Every season I say that I believe it less and less though. Maybe I exaggerated somewhat my stance on Young but I think he is very, very over-hyped and will reach a certain level of, much like Vick, and then not improve anymore.

Until I see him in the NFL and forced to use his arm more, I won't label him. I'm cautious, but not negative.

In College he was probably the best player on the field 95% of the time. Which means he could do what he wanted when he wanted, ie run or flip the ball or whatever.

In the NFL he will be forced to read Defenses and adjust. Just because he hasn't had to do it in College doesn't mean he can't pick it up in the NFL.

Until he falters at that there is no need of giving him a negative label.

Its happened before where a kid from an option, shotgun or flashy offense has come in and fit well in the NFL offense.

Plus if he spends two years behind McNair, I see no reason for anything other than success.

Vince Young runs better than Culpepper and basically every other QB in the NFL besides Vick. I'll take that.

Has a stronger arm than a ton of NFL QBS. I have no clue where this accuracy knock is coming from but every time I saw the guy play he was right on target. Watch the OSU game the guy was throwing darts right on target.

He's basically a little sower Vick with the ability to actually pass the ball. Standing at 6'4' gives him an advantage Vick will never have. Vick has to throw over D-Lineman to complete a pass. Which is why they always roll him out to complete a pass.

Young is a beast. Pass on him if you want but I'll tak him

Maybe I'm :loco: but I see more Culpepper / McNabb / Steve Young in Vince Young than Vick.

If you aren't talking about his throwing motion, then what are you talking about? He put up great passing numbers last season. How can you defend the assertion that his passing is awful? Not accurate? If 65% completion percentage is not accurate, then what would you consider accurate?

Vince is compared to Vick because Vince is the best running QB to come into the NFL since Vick, but in reality, I don't think it's all that good a comparison. Vince is bigger, stronger, doesn't throw as hard but is more accurate, and is not quite as fast, but is just as elusive. No way to know how he'll fare in the NFL, but Vince certainly accomplished a lot more in college than Vick did.

Vince will win over his teammates by being confident, poised, and totally fearless in the most pressure filled situations, and by carrying the team to wins on his back, just like he did in college.

:goodposting: Only thing I'd like to add is that I think VY has a lot more poise in the pocket than Vick. It's that poise in the pocket, and that he seemingly improves every time he steps onto the football field, that leads me to believe that he will be successful in a pro offense.

The simplified o is what gives me cause for concern. That's what makes me label him a project at this point. But a project that has the potential to be the best qb in the league.

Maybe I'm :loco: but I see more Culpepper / McNabb / Steve Young in Vince Young than Vick.
Exactly my thought. I agree about the Steve Young comparison more than anything with Vick. As someone said, if he goes to Tennessee and sits 1-2 years behind McNair, then there's no reason to think he won't be susccessful once he hits the field full-time. Young progressed as a passer every year at Texas.Passing%

58.7 - 59.2 - 65.2

Attempts

143-205-325

YPA was erratic, but still picked up in 2005 (8 - 7.4 - 9+). And anyone who watched him over the season knows that a subjective analysis of his play also leads to the conclusion that he has developed as a passer in his years at Texas. IMO, all this knocking of his passing is due more to normal pre-draft chatter than simply his mechanics or development as a QB. His mechanics can use some work, though, that is true. But if you watched him play, you know he has "it" and can most certainly take the next step in the NFL. My opinion is that sitting for a year behind McNair would only help him.

PLEASE STOP COMPARING MIKE VICK TO VINCE YOUNG! IT ISN'T EVEN CLOSE!

Vince Young is 6'5" tall and 225 lbs. There are no comparable characteristics of these two players. Vince Young is not a Mike Vick type quarterback. If you want to compare him to someone, compare him to Randall Cunningham, they are almost the same quarterback.

If you think his passing is awful, you somehow missed the OSU game and the national championship game. You also obviously missed the skills competition where he was one of the most accurate QB as well as having the second longest deep ball. He scrambles and runs, but more than that, he makes plays when the line breaks down. He runs because he can, not because he has to like Mike Vick.

Bad joke, but a fair point - Steve Young is certainly smarter.

So is Steven Hawkins but I don't think he is a better QB than Young. Young is smarter than Marino....based on this stupid comparison.

I think that vince young has a good chance to succeed in the NFL and possibly be a star but if you watched that skills competition his throws were deep but not that accurate in the deep throw contest. He didn't get one in bounds until his last throw. As most have said, VY shouldn't even be compared with the likes o Vick. Just because he is a scrambling QB doesn't mean he is Michael Vick. Young is a tall, agile and quick QB more of the likes of Steve Young & Steve McNAir.

I will agree with some of that. I think he was pretty impressive in the skills competition, especially compared to the other guys.I think Young reminds me a lot of McNair and Cunningham but not really Steve Young. To me, Young is a 2006 version of Cunningham.

I'll agree, but I see more similarity in the playing style between Steve Young and Vince Young than Vick and VY.

:goodposting:  I think the McNabb comparisons are accurate - only Young seems to have more gusto than McNabb.

I don't think it will be difficult for Vince Young to outperform Vick. This is truly a tribute to his talent, rather than a knock on Vick.

Vick wins games. He makes me sit with my mouth agape at what he can do on the run. Unfortunately for Vick, he just isn't the passer that many others are. I believe if they can surround him with the right skill players, he can be more explosive both running and passing.

Young can take it to the house on the ground or by air. Put Young in a situation where he can lob the ball to a Randy Moss type player if things break down and he will be frighteningly good. Let him improvise and build the offense around him and he will make everyone around him shine. Making an offense simple doesn't mean that it is easy to defense. Put Young in an offensive situation where he can react instinctively and move aside.

Just my opinion.

Has there ever been an NFL QB who did NOT win in college?I find that arguement amusing.

Cutler is in the running. Never a winning record (Although he did win some games).

:goodposting: Some solid observations. The height issue is definately real in the NFL. It is one of the reasons Vick rolls out so much all though you are exagerating Vick's weaknesses. Young definately has the physical tools and heart. Some team is going to make a heavy gamble on him. I'm not sure if I want it to be my team or not.

I consider Young a huge talent, but his risk is very high. Like you said, he was the best player on the field against defenses who were for the most part (including USC) not fast enough to catch him or didn't have the scheme to handle him. His passing is fine for what he had to do in college, however the NFL is much more complex than anything he's used to. I was actually starting to turn the corner on him before the Wonderlic scores came out but now I'm very concerned if he'll be able to make the adjustment from a shotgun QB to one who has to read defenses quickly at the line of scrimmage. He has the talent to be successful in the right sytem, but if it happens it won't be as quick as a lot of people think it will.

Give him two years on the bench and another couple starting and he could be another Cunningham. If someone decides to start him early I think he could be out of the league in a couple years.

So?Didn't he sit out at least four years serving his country? Then two more riding the pine behind Craig Morton?

I'm assuming you're referring to the 1971 season, which was actually only his 3rd in the NFL and, judging by the numbers was his first year as a starter. He threw for 1882 yards, 15 TDs and 4 picks. He completed about 60% of his passes and ran for 343 yards and 2 TDs on 41 carries.

Not bad.

Nope.Never said that.

In fact, I hope he's not even in a position to do so. I want him to sit one or two years. Almost any qb who is thrown to the wolves is in for trouble.
