Current owners of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart are probably benching these two for other runningbacks by now. But if you are reading this, then you are in the Shark Pool. What a Shark does is read posts like this and react accordingly. The Carolina Panthers offense have been abysmal thus far. The numbers back it up. Jimmy Clausen was merely one piece of the puzzle as to why they had offensive struggles. Coming out of the bye week the Carolina Panthers have made some changes. Matt Moore's insertion back into the starting QB role along with the return of Steve Smith are the biggest headlines. But you probably have not heard that the Panthers are also replacing Mackenzy Bernadeau with Geoff Schwartz at right guard and inserting Garry Williams at right tackle. What does this mean? This means that the Panthers are back focusing on the running game while taking shots downfield at Steve Smith. I expect the Panthers to be much more competitive coming out of the bye. I expect them to establish the running game again with Williams and Stewart as a dynamic duo. Things will get even better when Jeff Otah returns. If you bought low on them, good for you. If you were holding on, good for you.

Predictions for week 7:

Williams: 18 carries 105 yards 1 TD

Stewart: 12 carries 70 yards 1 TD

"CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—The Carolina Panthers are making more changes in hopes of sparking the NFL’s worst offense.

Three days after coach John Fox named Matt Moore the starting quarterback again, right guard Mackenzy Bernadeau said Thursday he’s been benched for Sunday’s game against San Francisco.

Bernadeau said Geoff Schwartz will move from right tackle to right guard and Garry Williams will make his first NFL start at right tackle.

“They came up to me and told me I was playing pretty well, but not up to the best of my ability,” said Bernadeau, who won the job in the preseason after Keydrick Vincent wasn’t re-signed. “Little things are holding me back, nothing crazy. Right now we just need a win and we need to make some changes and that is one of them.”

The Panthers (0-5) are averaging a league-low 10.4 points a game with Moore and Jimmy Clausen combining for nine interceptions. The line has allowed 17 sacks and the running game has struggled to come close to the numbers it put up a year ago when DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart each went over 1,100 yards.

“I have to work on everything in my game, specifically my run-blocking,” said Bernadeau, a seventh-round pick in 2008. “That’s something we as a whole have to work on, but me personally I think that’s something big-time I have to work on.”

Williams, signed as an undrafted rookie last year, will become the latest player to fill in at right tackle while Jeff Otah remains sidelined. Otah hasn’t played or practiced all season because of a knee issue that’s required two surgeries."

I will take the under on both

I seriously doubt Stewart gets 12 carries, but I hope you're right. I can't see playing him unless you are desperate for a FLEX position. I would like to see him get going so I could use him as trade bait...he's worthless right now. Same goes for D Will.

I play against DeAngelo this week, and was thinking the same thing. However, if they don't break out this week - put a fork in 'em..

The offense is broken, therefore no breakout is imminent from any CAR player. Unless you have their punter and you get points for punting yards, I would bench them all once again.

I agree with the OP that this game could shape up very well for Williams/Stewart owners. The 49ers are just a mess on the road and I think this will be a close game. If it's a close game, the chances of the Panthers getting 25-30 rushing attempts are pretty high since they really can't do anything else. I could see them coming out of the bye with a renewed emphasis on establishing Williams and Stewart and the running game. Plus getting Smith back helps even if Moore stinks. I'm not saying you can start either of these guys with extreme confidence but I think both have a shot this week. I wouldn't be surprised to see both of them score and put up good numbers.

So many fantasy players are focused on the past. I can't imagine benching Deangelo right now.

They've had a bye week to review things, they've made OL changes, Steve Smith is back, and Jimmy Clausen is benched.

Deangelo is running fine this year, he just hasn't had many opportunities. If they commit to the run, he could easily explode.

It's a bit risky to start Stewart, but he gets goalline carries, and I think neither of those projections are outlandish.

Deangelo is a top 3-4 talent. You play him every week if you own him.

I will most likely start DWill this week because I have a feeling that they will produce better in the running game coming out of the bye. That feeling could also be indigestion though...

I'm starting DeAngelo this week, but I cannot say I'm confident that he'll put up big numbers. But I just can sit him with my current roster.

I've started Williams every week. I've had other guys step up (Foster and Maclin primarily) to pick up his slack. He was my #1RB. I'm riding that pony all the way, unless injured.

Moore is the wildcard. If he plays like the end of last year he could surprise the hell out of the 49er's who will probably come out with 12 men in the box.If Smitty is healthy, he could go big.

Keep in mind that both of Smith's TDs this year has come from Matt Moore. Smith is a passionate player and he is obviously happy that Moore is back in the saddle. Moore to Smith is a much better chemistry than Clausen to Smith. With both of these players back the vertical threat is there to stretch the field.

I dropped JS for Lynch few weeks ago, JS is a awesome player, however he is not a good fantasy back, his last year stats was a mis representation, because DWill didn't play the last 4 games at all. I had them both hoping for a pathers trade... Epic fail! Without a passing game 3rd down conversation is hard to come by. Panthers has lowest time of possession in the league. I have DWill as a flex option right now and still debating between him and a injured "Iffy-lame" McFadden .... So sad Dwill is stuck in Car.

As a Stewart dynasty owner...I'd like to see some life out of this guy. His big TD catch a couple of weeks ago is the only glimmer of hope he has shown this season.

He has 119 yards TOTAL in 5 games while averaging 3.3 yds/carry. And this year he hasn't been on the injury report at all. He and DeAngelo should chip in and by Otah a hyperbaric chamber.

And that was an immense busted coverage ... the Saints' didn't even pick him up on the play coming out of the backfield.

Certain games pop us as logical wins or losses. I think this is a logical win this week for a desperate Panther team coming off the bye at home vs a 49'er team traveling from the west coast.

D Will- low#1 or high #2 RB

Smith- #2 WR being healthy and Moore back

Stewart- will need a couple of TD's or a big Panther lead to rack up enough carries

When I see "breakout", I think about "back on track" or "turning it around". This seems more like a logical prediction for a game where these guys can/should perform to their ADP. I'm not seeing anything that suggests "the ship will be righted" longer term(?)

I was going to start a new thread on this but since this one was just created I'll pose this question here. Yesterday in the "Buy Low" weekly by Bloom, Jonathan Stewart was touted as having the potential to be "uber-elite" next year and Bloom thought the reason why was that Carolina was going to let DeAngelo walk next year. If this was the case why wouldn't they have entertained trade offers for DeAngelo (or Stewart) this year? That doesn't make any sense. The panthers aren't making any playoffs this year why not try to get some value if they were just going to release him to free agency next year?

Is there a chance that if Carolina keeps both backs next year, Stewart will demand a trade?

Any Carolina homers have any updates on this? Dynasty holders of Stewart would love to know.

I obviously agree with you since i just got Deangelo in a trade in my keeper league. I'm not too sure on Jstew, but Deangelo is the perfect buy low opportunity. He is an elite talent, his situation will improve since Jon Fox cannot believe that he can continue NOT giving the ball to his 2 studs and keep a job. Jstew and Deangelo are absolute perfect buy low candidates, especially for dynasty/keeper formats. Remember, you can't buy low unless his value is low and you can't sell high unless his value is high. Deangelo's value is in the crapper right now, it is an absolute perfect time to purchase.

A lot of people talk a good game about buying low and selling high, but i don't think they understand what exactly it means to buy low and sell high. They think that they are "selling high" on Torain, but that's just not possible since his value isn't very high. In another thread i mentioned that i traded LT/Bowe for Deangelo in a keeper format. LT's value is HIGH right now, that's a player that you can sell high on. Everyone is assuming that he is an RB1. His value will not appreciate more. Deangelo is on the other side of the spectrum. His value will not get lower than where it is now.

What if Deangelo is going to be signed? The guy is an uber talent, why would you just let him walk? If you're building a superbowl team, you would want both backs on your team. But let's assume that this bloom character is right and Deangelo is going to walk. The reason they didn't trade him is because they didn't get a good enough offer for him. I believe that they get an automatic 3rd round draft pick if Deangelo leaves at the end of the year. So if a team was willing to give up a 1st rounder then i could understand, but with just 1 year left on his contract it would have to be a team in a necessary condition like Green Bay. But perhaps Green Bay didn't make an offer of a 1st rounder? And unless it is a 1st, why would Carolina make the trade? If they are going to get a 3rd rounder anyway, what's the point of sending Deangelo on his way for anything but a 1st rounder?

yet there are others that focus on previous performance. To make a blanket statement that he must be started makes no sense. If you have others that are producing why not play the guys that are actually scoring for your team. This isn't a complete rip on Deangelo as I do believe he's going to get better but thus far he has 1 TD & like 60 yards rushing a game. If I had better options - I would have no problem benching him.

I don't see Stewart as someone who is likely to demand a trade. Anything is possible, but it just doesn't seem likely to me.As far as DeAngelo goes, I'm on record in another thread saying that he's going to blow up this week. I predict 120 yards and 2 touchdowns. I don't see Stewart having a huge game, unless by some miracle the Panthers put up a lead and run the clock out.

For the people saying why would Carolina let Williams walk, here's a better question, Why would Williams come back? And the answer to why would they not trade Deangelo? Both the Coach and the GM are likely gone after the lockout situation is solved unless they really turn this club around in the second half of the season, what incentive do they have to trade him?

Adam Schefter said today he believes the Panthers will franchise Williams if they can't re-sign him in the offseason.

Something to watch for those who hold Stewart in Dynasty/Keeper leagues.

Yup. Jerry generally takes care of his guys within reason.For those in dynasty leagues, this team really isn't this bad. They are one of the youngest in the league. The defense is good and missing Thomas Davis. Otah is a mountain of a man and will instantly improve the running game when he gets back. They have a huge QB hole to fill and then some other minor holes. Jerry refused to address these issues this year since he's banking on a lockout. Everything move this year has been done with a lockout in mind. Personally I think Fox has gotten stale is really isn't that bright. I don't think he's surrounded by the right guys to overcome his shortfalls.

I'm thinking now is the perfect time to buy D. Williams low as well...and just did.

I traded Cooley for D. Williams. Already have A. Hernandez at TE.

Car's schedule looks pretty good too:

@Stl

NO

@TB

Bal

@Cle

@Sea

Think the bye week, Moore back (who was yanked too soon), S. Smith back, and SF travelling east to Car = D. William's arrival in 2010.

And perfect timing for me.

I'll gladly trade an 8th round TE for potential first round RB value.

I don't care. Any middle of the road TE like Cooley for a talented RB like DWill, producing or not, is a rape of the highest order. Not hard to find a serviceable TE on the wire these days..

I think this prediction came a week early. I think Moore is going to be able to keep the defenses honest - and open up the run.

I will take responsibility for this. But I was right in that the Carolina offense will improve. I expect both DeAngelo and Stewart to get back on track in week 8. Matt Moore drove them to their first win this week and the offense looked much better.

The passing game looked much better but the running game faltered. Stewart still looks like he's running in cement. That was the worst game of his career when given 14 carries.

Way to take responsibility while also saying you're still right, we'll just see it in another week. People have been saying "next week" all season long.I'm actually happy the DeAngelo owner turned down my offer of Lynch+some scrubs. Panthers *still* look awful.

I disagree. Cooley is an every week starter. DeAngelo is not. Hell, he's not even a bye week fill in at this point. Starting rb's are ridiculously overrated...5 points a week blows.

I have an offer of Stewart for Santonio Holmes and I don't really need Santonio and I desperately need a decent RB, but I think I am going to turn this down. He averaged 2.1 ypc on 14 carries. I think Stewart simply doesn't have it anymore.

His make or break game will be next week against the Rams. St. Louis had all sorts of problems with Blount who is a power runner, much like Stewart. I think next week will be another game where Stewart gets close to 15 carries. If he struggles again that'll be it for him.
