just curious how everyone handles their league's draft lottery

my league is entering its 17th keeper free season and we have done all three of the poll's options.

Back when everyone was in the same locale, the lottery was held at a bar during a night of league bonding

now half of the league resides out of state but our commissioner videotapes the lottery and posts it on the net.

How do the rest of you longtime FFLer's handle your league's lottery...if you even have one

thanks in advance for your response

I commish a contract-keeper league, but we have a 2-round rookie-only draft. The top 8 spots in those rounds are determined by a weighted lottery among the teams that missed the playoffs the prior year. Similar to what the NBA does, but with different weighting.

The remainder of the rookie rounds, and all of the veteran rounds, are worst-to-first from the prior year.

Anyway, we hold the lottery on the day of the NFL draft in April. I run it from a laptop and we get around 10 of the 16 owners to show up at a local bar to watch a little NFL Draft coverage, hold the lottery, and do some trading. Lottery spots are drawn from 1 thru 8, then revealed in coundown mode from 8 to 1.

We have an auction for the first three rounds - then go the serpentine route. The auction upfront allows everyone a chance at players they really want.

We have an auction draft, so "draft order" (player nomination order) is pretty irrelevent.

But in a redraft, anything other than randomly determining the order at least a week or 2 before the draft is idiotic IMO.

PS those poll choices frankly are really screwed up, ie make no sense. Are you interested in the timing of when the order is picked or how the order is picked or something else? It's like going

"What's your fav kind of car??"

Chevy

Ford

Blue

Red

6-cylinder

8-cylinder

sheesh

We go in a worst-to-first order and teams get to select what slot they want to draft from. So if a team thinks there are 3 players in the top tier they can pick 3rd instead of having to pick 1st. Most of the time, the beginning and the very end of the round get taken before the middle and late middle does. Picks 9 and 10 seem to consistently be the ones that people want the least.

Our commish broadcasts it live over the net. We are doing it Aug 5th and the draft is Sep 2nd.
That is a long time between the lottery and the draft. sort of like it, could be done in our league next year. Our lottery is broadcast by our commish on the net and it is also recorded and sent to all owners.

We are having our Summer Meeting tonight where we review last season, discuss any changes for this season and then we'll have a lottery to determine the order for our draft which is on September 2.

Actually this season we are having two lotteries: the first one will consist of the teams that did not make the playoffs last season. They'll draw cards and the lowest gets first choice of the 12 draft positions, second lowest gets second choice, etc. After that lottery the playoff teams have a second lottery where they choose the remaining draft positions that weren't taken by the non-playoff teams.

The real highlight of this meeting is the beer swap where everyone brings a case of micro or imported beer and we split them up (after sampling, of course).
