Wife and I argued about him just the other day. I said I wouldn't vote for him again because he has done absolutely nothing. His efforts (what little effort he has exerted) have been futile. The American Research Group's September 2011 Quarterly New Hampshire Poll also found the president's approval rating in the first-in-the-nation primary state is pegged at 31%.

Dante Scala, a political science professor at the University of New Hampshire, said the notable shift in Obama's support is among undeclared, or independent voters. Sixty-seven percent of undeclared voters in the state say they disapprove of how the president has handled the economy.

Even though New Hampshire's unemployment rate is much lower than the national figure, Scala said voters here are affected by rampant displeasure in the economy.

Obama lost New Hampshire's primary to Hillary Clinton in 2008 but triumphed over John McCain here with 54% in the general election. The state carries four electoral votes.

The American Research group poll was conducted by telephone from September 25-29, surveying 547 adults in New Hampshire. The sampling error was plus or minus 4.2 percentage points.

Why are you taking a poll from WAY back in march 2011? Here is a CBS/New York times poll that looks at September 2011 numbers. His personal favorability ratings went upside-down for the first time:Approval rating: 43%

Disapproval rating: 50%

Favorable rating: 39%

Unfavorable rating: 42%

So now we have a situation where the public disapproves of his job performance, and they dislike him on a personal level.

RealClearPolitics covers his favorable/unfavorable ratings. Their poll average is +1 in his favor. So while it may be technically correct to argue the public likes him (by 1%), its just as well to say the public is split overall on wether they like him or not, and that they are increasingly disliking him on a personal level, as this number is falling.

Interesting... I tend to believe that 2008 Obama won on his personality, as he had little policy-making background to review. This time around, we have a significant policy window to look at, and it's not one that resonates with the American voter. I don't think personality will win out this time.

This compares to January 2011, where only 28% agreed.

The article concludes that Obama's only chance of winning may be to win ugly, by running a divisive campaign tailored to drive up democrat turnout out of fear of the republican nominee. I don't know how you make people afraid of Romney, but whatever.

Four in 10 Americans “strongly” disapprove of how President Obama is handling job as president in the new Washington Post-ABC News poll, the highest that number has risen during his time in office and a sign of the hardening opposition to him as he seeks a second term.

While the topline numbers are troubling enough, dig deeper into them and the news gets no better for Obama. Forty-three percent of independents — a group the president spent the better part of the last year courting — strongly disapprove of the job he is doing. Forty seven percent of people 65 years of age and older — reliable voters in any election — strongly disapprove of how he is doing his job.

Strong opposition to Obama has grown markedly since the start of the year.

In a mid-January Post-ABC survey, 28 percent strongly disapproved of the job Obama was doing. That number has steadily ticked upward — with the exception of a poll in early May that followed hard on the killing of Osama bin Laden — as the year has worn on and the economy has remained sluggish (at best).

And even as his strong disapproval numbers have steadily risen, his strong approval numbers have gone into a mirror-image decline.

In January, 30 percent strongly approved of the job Obama was doing. In the latest Post-ABC survey, that numbers is 21 percent and, as recently as early August, it had dipped to 18 percent.

All of those numbers — and yes, we here at the Fix do love us some poll numbers — point to a simple fact: The “anyone but Obama” crowd is getting larger and more strident in their opinions, while the president’s base is growing less and less strongly supportive of how he is doing the job.

To that point: 43 percent of self-identified Democrats said they “strongly” approve of the job Obama is doing, while 74 percent of Republicans strongly disapprove. That’s a 31-point disparity for you non-math majors out there.

The poll data provide empirical evidence for the recent switch in Obama’s rhetoric from a focus on compromise (aimed at independents) to one that accentuates the differences between his approach and the one advocated by Republicans (aimed at Democrats).

The Post-ABC poll does suggest, however, that Obama’s jobs plan could well help him repair relations with his party base. More than eight in 10 Democrats — and 81 percent of liberals — support it.

A dispirited base coupled with a highly energized opposition isn’t an ideal place for the president to be, but neither is it a political death sentence. President George W. Bush found himself in a not dissimilar situation in 2004 and managed to win re-election using a scorched-earth approach designed to disqualify Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry (D) in the eyes of voters.

These numbers affirm that the 2012 election will look a lot more like that 2004 election than it will Obama’s 2008 victory. Put another way: winning ugly may be the only way for the president to win next November.

The Obama administration's Department of Energy was poised last summer to give Solyndra a second major taxpayer loan of $469 million, even as the company's financial situation was growing more dire.

The Energy Department was actively pushing to provide the second loan guarantee to the troubled solar-panel manufacturer in April and May 2010, when Solyndra's auditors warned the company was in danger of closing due to its rapidly mounting debts and expenses, according to complete e-mails just released by a House committee investigating the original loan.

One reason why the Obama administration has been reluctant to officially shut down the program is that it was one of the main accounting gimmicks they used during the health care debate. Because the CLASS Act was supposed to collect five years of premiums before paying out any benefits, the Democrats have been claim $80 billion in short-term surplus from the program as deficit reduction, ignoring the obvious fact that the money would eventually have to pay for benefits. It’s been called a “budget zombie.”

On Friday the White House Counsel sent a letter to the House Energy and Commerce Committee explaining they won't comply with the request because it "implicates longstanding and significant institutional Executive Branch confidentiality interests."

Giving one of your biggest campaign donors a taxpayer guaranteed loan of five hundred million dollars for a business venture everyone knew would fail? yeah, I'd want to keep that confidential too.

More on the CLASS failure

The CLASS Act’s demise, while all but inevitable, is disturbing on a number of levels. It’s hard to think of a more fitting example of how the budget process in Washington has been completely corrupted. What kind of depraved accounting scheme lets Congress enact into law a program that literally cannot sustain itself from the get-go? A program that the CBO, in accordance with an absurdly flexible set of budgetary rules, scored as deficit-reducing! Not only that, but the 10-year’s worth of CLASS Act premiums accounted for most of the overall “savings” under Obamacare. In fact, the law almost certainty could not have passed without them, as they were included to give the (false) appearance of fiscal sanity.

All the complaining about Cheney not releasing the names, scaring up boogeymen that had corrupt influence over the gov't? Whining he called them state secrets and claimed executive privilege?

Obama administration appeals ruling on White House visitor logs

The Obama administration is appealing a judge's ruling that Secret Service records of visitors to the White House complex are subject to disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act.

The Justice Department filed a formal notice of appeal Friday afternoon regarding U.S. District Court Judge Beryl Howell's August ruling rejecting arguments that the so-called WAVES records belong to the White House even though they are maintained and used by the Secret Service.

The decision to appeal the ruling to the D.C. Circuit would appear to be in tension with Obama's repeated pledges to operate the most transparent administration in history. The White House announced in Sept. 2009 that it was voluntarily releasing the names of most White House visitors from Sept. 15 forward. However, the conservative group Judicial Watch sought information on visits before that date.

The position taken by the Obama Justice Department, namely that White House visitor records are presidential records and not agency records, is essentially the same one that the department took under President George W. Bush.

Howell did not rule that every White House visit had to be disclosed. However, she concluded that all the data had to be made public unless the government asserted a specific exemption from FOIA, such as provisions protecting national security and privacy.

There was no immediate comment on the appeal from the White House or the Justice Department.

We are in Afghanistan because if we leave, it is very probable that the current government there will not survive, and the Taliban will return to power. I realize that in today's neo-isolationist America, the response to this is going to be a "so what?" from a lot of conservatives and liberals both. But the unfortunate fact is that this would be very bad for us, and as frustrating as our situation over there is now, we cannot afford to leave just yet. When can we leave? I don't know. But not now.
