This past Saturday, my son and his 12U football team had the awesome experience of playing in an "exhibition" game at SoFi stadium here in the LA area.

It was an unusually rainy day in SoCal, but the parents and kids made do with pop-ups and were able to tailgate a bit before we went into the stadium. They had the field cut in half, and two teams were playing on one end and two more on the other side. There was no clock or official score, but there were officials calling penalties.

My son initially started out as a defensive end earlier in the season but transitioned into playing interior line, because, as the coaches said, he's "quick and slippery". He had a few sacks this season and a good number of tackles.

He ended up getting two tackles in this exhibition game, and technically we "lost" 21-7, but what an amazing experience for the boys (and mom and dad too!).

So last week my son was complaining his wrist hurt. He claims he told my wife and I early in the season, I honestly do not remember the conversation. He did say he spoke with the team trainer and she stated it was ok for him to continue to play and eventually he wore a brace for his wrist. We set-up an appointment on Tuesday to get his wrist looked at, turns out he played most of the season with a hairline fracture in his wrist. He said the pain wasn't terrible, but it was sore. Tomorrow we have an appointment with an orthopedist to review his Xray and determine what next. It may just be wearing a brace, but we will see where it goes from there.

Yesterday my son told my wife and I that South Dakota coaches called his head coach and did say they really like my son's video and how he plays. When we visited two weeks ago he and his teammate really enjoyed the experience, loved everything about the school. They knew one of the players on the team and had the opportunity to sneak a peak at the player lounge area as well as the team locker room. My son has a different attitude this offseason compared to last season, he is immediately ready to get to work. Unfortunately the wrist is a restriction, but he is getting leg work in. Tomorrow's appointment with orthopedist will help us understand what direction we go from here. When we went to South Dakota, the team lead recruiter and the coach that recruits our are both said they would have my son out for a Junior visit, not sure what that means. Ultimately it may take us going there for their summer camp for my son to put in work in front of the coaches.

It would be fun to play for one of the powerhouse FCS schools.

I had a hairline fracture on my heel as a kid. They basically said nothing they could do for it. It lingered forever. But that was late 80's. My guess is they will say to rest it. I would ask the doctor to do a Vitamin D test. My daughter broker her arm. They didn't test. She broke it again and then tested and found she was deficient. Now I tell everyone to ask for it... seems like something they should test for on all kids broken bone injuries to me. If they did the first time with my daughter could have avoided her missing all of her 8th grade basketball and half volleyball seasons.

Turns out my son broke a bone in his wrist in week 2, he played out the season with a broken wrist. He said there was some pain, but it was not terrible. He said he was intent on playing every down he could to put a video of his highlights together. We have to get a CAT scan then the orthopedic doctor will tell us the next step, surgery or just wear a brace.

This Friday heading to Northern Illinois for a gameday visit. I understand that they love Wisconsin linemen, their o line last year that beat Notre Dame were all from Wisconsin. It looks like this year's team has one player on the oline not from Wisconsin. Next season Northern Illinois moves to the Mountain West (Hawaii, Air Force, Wyoming, UNLV, Nevada, among others). We will see which directions things go for my son in the coming weeks with his wrist.

Full on break and still played... beast.

A lot of good... just outside of the elite.... players from the greater Chicago area head to Northern Illinois for ball. They focus a lot of their recruiting in Illinois and Wisconsin. Good luck on the trip!
