Bill Belichick:

"I like football.

I like football season and all the things that go with it."

9:02 AM - 4 Sep 2019

----------------------------------

It struck me that he speaks in the same pattern as this guy.  >>>  http://whilethemenwatch.com/admin/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/belichick-grinch-look-alike.jpg

“The Grinch hated Christmas! The whole Christmas season!
Now, please don’t ask why. No one quite knows the reason.
It could be his head wasn’t screwed on just right.
It could be, perhaps his shoes were too tight.
But I think that the most likely reason of all
May have been that his heart was two sizes too small.”
i like football

and porno

and books about war

Only Rose from that list belongs in the HOF.  I never said Belichick wasn't a HOF coach, he is, but he will always play second fiddle to Lombardi.
I honestly don't know how to do this comparison.  My view of historical place of coaches is based on how they changed the game so I view Paul Brown as the inventor of modern football and therefore the greatest coach of all time, followed by Belichick and Bill Walsh for similar reasons for their contributions to changing the game.  I don't think particularly much about the Lombardi's and Landry's of the world beyond "really good football coach".

Seems like a total waste then to have that analytics guy sitting in the booth in constant radio chatter with BB during games for the last 20 years. Ernie Adams is the most important cog to the Patriots' success that everyone always forgets about.
The article was about using analytics on one play call. I think coaches use it more for game scripting or player on player matchups.

Exactly. Basically was asked if he used analytics for fourth down and two-point decisions. That is what elicited the "less than zero" click bait. Said it's too dependent on the unique game situation to rely on irrelevant historical data.

I love how reporters still believe that BB answers questions honestly.

BB will never tip his hand to any possible competitive advantage.

I think all the teams use analytics. Do you think Belichick uses it for a single play call?
Yes.

When the game starts, Adams is upstairs in the booth with the Patriots’ eye-in-the-sky team. He wears a headset. He has Belichick’s ear. When the Patriots have allowed NFL Films to record some of Belichick’s in-game dialogue, you hear a lot of, “What have we got, Ernie?’’

Ernielytics.

Its amazing how dumb pretty much all the other coaches are. None of them have learned anything from him.
Including subbing in 2nd string RBs. Its the coycat league for a reason. The only problem is that they haven't figured out that Brady skills allow the Pats to have a bevy of 2nd rate RBs. All can do everything when they are in there. Run, pass block and catch out of the backfield. So here we have teams subbing out their #1 RB for their inferior #2 RB because they've seen Belicheck successfully do it and win year after year. If the Pats never had the success they have had, the RB position would still be stud 3 down RB across the NFL.

This tells the story.

When Ngakoue saw running back Giovani Bernard in the game, he figured Cincinnati was going to throw a screen pass and got in position to pick it off.

''I noticed when (Bernard) was in the game, they were looking to pass,'' Ngakoue said. ''And when it was (Joe Mixon), they were looking to run. So I thought it was going to be a screen.''

Not sure I totally buy into this one. NE has generally figured out how to get a lot of production for very little money. Their total yardage / total touchdowns from the RB is at or near the top of the league.

If people want to say they have figured out how best to spend their cap dollars and that having a high priced RB isn’t necessary to win, then sure. I don’t think Brady has that big an impact on the RB numbers. Other teams should be able to run screens, outlets, dump offs, wheel routes, and have backs play in the slot or line up on the outside.

This article makes it seem like BB took the penalty to burn clock. He actually was looking to give his punter more room.

(ball was at NYJ 32 yd line as I recall). Punt to the end zone would net 12 yards.

imo, BB was dissappointed Gase declined the penalty ... so that's when the false start was in order.

BB could have kept calling for a false start until the refs called them for unsportsmanlike, 15 yards and reset the clock. Then his punter would have had room.

... had it been a closer game, guarantee that's what he's smiling about.

Could you imagine if another coach did this to HIM?

Scenario;  AFC Championship game, Pats down by 14 to KC, 4th qtr,  with 7 mins on the clock KC gets it to the Pats 38. Delay of game. False start. False start, False start.

1 play, 2 mins come off the clock, and they punt it inside the 20. I'm thinking BB's head would explode right there on the sidelines.

Key word, 'should' but they are all trying to be tricky.

These teams have specialty backs that can't do it all and basically announce the type of play they're going to run by being out there for the snap at all.

It's like James White and Sony Michel are getting to be. (I kid, but Sony, despite the slightest of upticks in the passing game is still out there to run the football or run play action.)

What would have been even better IMO is if AFTER burning 1:27 of clock and jets declining multi  penalties is if Belichick had run Nugent out there to kick a 50 yard FG. THAT would have been SO awesome
I was thinking the same thing when NYJ declined the second penalty. Just kick the dang FG then.

long FG after 2 declined penalties would have made Gase look like a complete imbecile there ... burned 1:27 on one play and at 36-0 Bill would be smilin away  :sadbanana:

I have ZERO doubt this uptick in Sony’s passing action early season vs weak opponents is purely to buy equity in pass/rush split analytics later this season when it counts.

ABSOLUTELY something Bill would do. Which is awesome.

Same reason why he’s giving so little intel on the defensive side... he doesn't HAVE to. Zero / Zero Bluff is all this unit NEEDS to do vs these teams. Late season data on NE tendencies will be ####.

He knows how teams make their decisions these days. He’s deliberately using the first half of this season to poison that dataset for later in the year.

It’s brilliant, and it’s why he’s the GOAT.

I honestly think there is a decent chance THAT Belichick was smiling because one of his coaches suggested over the headset that maybe they:

1. Kick the FG now

Or

2. Take ANOTHER false start and burn MORE clock

Think about, Belichick likely wasn't smiling about what head ALREADY done.  He was likely smiling about what more he COULD do!

I'm not sure Belichik really did anything here. This is Gase's fault. Does he not know the clock will reset? The decision to back the team up to get more room to punt is as old a decision as it gets, we've all seen it a thousand times. Who declines that penalty? BB just wanted the 5 damn yards and all Gase did was manage to get his team stuck on the 14 yard line and kill a minute off the clock. BB is just laughing at Gase here not his own genius. Hopefully they don't change this rule, screw HC's who can't figure this out.

What's also interesting to me is that the exact same thing happened in week 3. Jets stopped the Pats on 3rd, the Pats went to punt from the 40 - took a DOG penalty to back up to the 45, and then took another false start penalty - again by Bolden - to back it up to the 50. But Gase took those penalties.

Belichick is the single greatest competitive advantage in the NFL.  He’s playing a different game than everyone else.

Did anybody see the Herald and Rotoworld's blurb about his son, Steve, calling the defense this year?

That's staggering.

I still think the man behind the curtain is BB. His son may be calling the plays, but BB is the one that breaks down the film and sets up the situational game plan. IMO, that’s like having the answers to the test before the exam. All you need to do is put the answer to the question.

It’s also clear (to me anyway) that the rapid turnover in head coaches and the new crop of QBs in the league is only adding fuel to the BB fire. New coaches and QBs are ill equipped to beat NE. Even the established coaches struggle. Add in that Brady can read defenses at the line better than anyone else in the league and that has driven the NE revival the past 5 years.

That's all true, best I can suss out.
