I loved Fletch as a kid, but after a recent rewatch I just saw him as a giant, irredeemable ########.

That’s the point!

i'm reminded of a guy i used to know in NY who was an early comedy partner of Chase. he was a very funny but pretty neurotic guy and had a fitful, obsessive way of interrupting himself when he talked. EXCEPT when the opportunity arose to gush over his pal Chevy's deconstruction of the preppie - then he would fawn like a dreamy tween over how his friend had weaponized glib for comedy's sake. the Fletches arent much more than setups for the repulsive majesty of Chase's rugpullings, but that's enuff for a lot of folks.

I like that movie a lot.

Lilly Raines: [in a conference room] What makes you think he'll call again?

Frank Horrigan: Oh, he'll call again. He's got, uh, "panache."

Lilly Raines: Panache?

Frank Horrigan: Yeah, it means flamboyance.

Lilly Raines: Mm, I know what it means.

Frank Horrigan: Really? I had to look it up.
:lmao:

L.A. Confidential's resolution is cynical enough for me, but I don't know if it's noir. I guess that's why it's a modern, synthetic noir, which is great for Japanese sportscars, but if you like tail fins and whitewalls, then...

I happen to love the zippiness of a road-ready Japanese sports car, frankly.

L.A. Confidential is alright by me, just like Jesus.

Always thought Chase was really dark. Could even sense it as a kid. That's why Caddyshack was never funny to me. Vacation was never that funny with the Clark character, either. Fletch, too.

The best part about Fletch is the score, actually. Perfectly eighties with some Randy Newman to boot. Speaking of noir, Fletch struck me as noir, actually. A bit. I'm not sure I like any of the characters in the end, and the good guy doesn't really get the girl, the smart one does.

it's no noir like Foul Play, but yeah...

LA Confidential would be neo noir IMO. Has everything for a noir. Fletch is definitely doing a noir inspired comedy, not unlike The Big Lebowski.

Was in a trivia contest last week that involved identifying movie posters.  Felt great that we got all but one of them, but sadly someone got all of them right.  :(   The one we missed?  "For a Few Dollars More"

Thus concludes my contribution to WesternChat.

Wife and I saw Free Guy today.  I thought it was awesome and my wife liked it too.  If you like video games at all, I’d say it’s a must see.  Just really well written and lots of LOL moments for me.

took the family to see Free Guy in the theater. a lot of light fun- recommend as an easy light hearted joy ride. Truman Show meets wreck it Ralph meets Ready Player One without trying too hard to be much of anything. well cast (Taika Waititi fantastic as the villain), tons of popculture references (including a Greek chorus of actual YouTubers that my kids recognized)....good fun.

:hifive:

Caught an underrated flick that I've seen before.

I like it more and more each time I see this one.

I've been to the Badlands a few times.  Such a great cinematic backdrop.

Thunderheart

Luv the gut hanging out shotgun wielding racist spewing cameo by David Crosby.

Type casting?

I really liked it, too.

And I had my kids watch it before we went on our family trip to Yellowstone and the Badlands.

Wind River on netflix, looked interesting enough and had a solid cast so decided to watch it tonight. Wow, what a great f’n movie. i’ve never been a big Renner fan but he nailed this role.

‘Wind River’ tells the story of a small town in Wyoming, where tragedy strikes. After a young girl is found frozen to death at the Wind River Indian Reservation, a professional tracker with a vendetta and an out-of-state FBI agent come together to try and solve the case.

Yeah man.

It begins by saying ''based on real life events' and their is something about it that hits deep with me.

I've driven through different reservations and that movie perfectly catches the look and feel.  Loved the glimpses into the spiritual aspects they caught.  And Val Kilmer does have Native blood in his history so I wonder if he got any cool vibes while doing the movie.

All about the director. Love his work.

Saw "News of the World" on HBO MAX and enjoyed it.

I'm not a huge Tom Hanks fan but thought he was decent enough.

If you like Westerns I'd recommend, if you don't you probably wont like it.

Final Destination 4

:lmao: . This is bonkers.
I was laughing my ### off at the wreck at the start of the movie.   Ridiculous how cars kept flying at that specific part of stands.  I think in the movie there was a news report saying that 52 people died?     The movie is nutty.

I followed this gem up with The Curse of Frankenstein.  :oldunsure:

Going to try one of the horror movies on my list that look like they might actually be good: His House or Apostle.   I need to watch Raw one of these days too.

One of the best films I've seen in a while.

wife put on some "top Netflix movie in the US right now" violence porn thing...Kate?  why they cast the lead, dunno. we're about 30mins in and not sure I'm gonna make it.

I watched Malcolm X tonight (first time) and it was a bit of a mess. Great cast, very interesting person in an interesting time, and his life went through many changes, so it had a lot of potential for an excellent biopic.

But the editing was way off in many places, with scenes seeming way too long or amateurish. And too much time spent in the early part of his life before his story got really interesting.

I went away thinking that it could have been much better.

damn. will probably give it a go, but thanks for the info.

we watched a Netflix new release last night- Beckett.

there's car chases, shooting and fighting, so I'm sure there'll be those who like it. but it was pretty flimsy and goofy with a lot of plot-writing-for-convenience more than sense.

Beckett - Watched this on Friday. I thought it was a VERY poor man's North by Northwest. Not at all saying it was in the same league of quality as NxNW. It wasn't. It was much worse. Just saying the story reminded me of it.

Also - a complete waste of the lovely and talented Alicia Vikander.

So it's not a remake of the 1964 Peter O'Toole movie about the Archbishop of Caterbury? Or it is and they spiced it up with some action anachronistic trains?

No Sudden Move on HBO Max.

Classic Soderbergh period crime drama - this one in Detroit in the 1950's.  Great cast and fantastic acting, good story with lots of twists but not too confusing.  Soderbergh slips in some social commentary with a fun plot, but it works.  Recommended.

I was a little disappointed with the Ten Rings movie. It may just be that I had my expectations too high based on reviews/Rotten Tomato.

It was ok, but seemed like one big 2 hour fight.

I finally got around to seeing 40 Year Old Version, after putting it on my watchlist last year.  Very good movie.  I think its about NYC more than anything else - funny and fully of great characters.  Not as preachy as I'd feared - worthwhile imo.
