roverkid still hasn't been able to return to school.   her concussion symptoms have actually gotten worse.   went to her primary physician, who referred her to a neurologist.   just spoke to the neurologist...they don't have any appointments available until next March.

Someone get my bail money ready.

Oh man, I'm sorry buddy.

Don't you have a brother who's a doctor?  Can he pull some strings and find her a neurologist sooner?

After the 30 minutes on the phone to neurology to be told I can't get an appointment for 5 months, I've now been on hold with the primary physician's office (without speaking to a human yet) for 15 minutes.

I could emigrate to Canada and get her some health care faster than this.

Does retirement impede them to try and help here?  I don't anything about doctors or retirement (other than I'll never see it) so was just thinking out loud.  Poor kid.
They're both out of state and not practicing anymore.   At this point they'll be no help in breaking through the insurance/provider/referral system.

Any chance you could go self-pay and bypass insurance and then sue the #### out the insurance company later? (Obviously not a top choice, but I have a 13 year old girl and I’m getting mad by proxy here just reading this).

Just keep going to the ER or a children’s hospital anyway? (Seems to work for people with no insurance or govt medical cards here...with my insurance I probably just racked up a copay typing that....)

Hope Roverkid  gets a break soon. At least it’s obvious she has a good dad in her corner.

Man, so sorry. I’ll be first in line to crowd source your bail fund

Not sure if you got through to her pediatrician or had any luck of you did, but we definitely have had some success in the past with appointments with specialists when our pediatrician has called them and told them it was important my daughter be seen soon.

You could also talk to the pediatrician about the possibility of going to see a sports doctor that specializes in concussions rather than a neurologist. My wife did that and was referred to a sports therapist that handled concussions and they were fantastic.

Already went to the sports medicine specialist.   Her symptoms have gotten worse since then, and he doesn't have any availability until next week.    I'll I'm trying to do is get her primary physician to call the neurologist and tell them to get her in sooner.   I just keep getting the "she'll call you back" answer after 30 minutes on hold.    It's been 3 days, 6 calls to the primary, 2 calls to the neurologist, two calls to the sports medicine guy and 5 hours on hold, with nothing accomplished.

WTF.  I can't remember who made the first diagnosis.  One option is if she has a really bad one, take her to the ER, and if they can't figure it out maybe they will admit her overnight and someone would see her?

Yeah, tomorrow I'm taking my laptop and setting up shop in the doctor's lobby.   I can work from anywhere, so I'll just make her office my office tomorrow.
this  i don't know what your hospital situation is up there, but i know if i went the ER at CHOC, it would take forever, but i would eventually get to a specialist.  kid centric hospitals, take things much more seriously with kids, than with you and i

She started at an urgent care, then 3 visits to primary, then sports medicine doc, then back to primary when her symptoms got worse.   Referral to neurology that went nowhere from that because they need her doctor to tell them it's urgent.  Can't get primary or sports medicine guy to call back since to intervene with the neurologist.

May go the ER route if we have to just to get her seen by a neurologist.

gl rover and roverfish... I can't imagine how in the red mad you must be. I'm pissed just reading this stuff.

oh... damn. seattle, right? my BIL is a neurologist, his wife a radiologist... but they're in NoVA... and probably don't like me anyways enough to help out.

I wish I had some connection that could help, but I don't know anyone in neurology or on the west coast.  You have my best wishes.  I would look into what Raiders said and check out local children's hospitals.

Agreed with the children's hospital recommendation if there is one anywhere near you. Sometimes I take it for granted that I have two of the best children's hospitals in the country within 30 minutes of me.

It’s the children’s hospital that has an appointment in March and will only see her earlier if her primary will call them direct.  Thus the camping in her office tomorrow.

ymmv but when my (then) 3 year old fell and smacked the #### out of her head, i went to the ER where they basically made us lowest priority for about 45 minutes. i just got ####### livid and started snapping off on the poor receptionist, which brought out security & nurses, who eventually escorted us to a room where i snapped until a nurse higher up the food chain came in and took care of us.

felt like we would have been sitting there for hours if i didn't get cranky

It s the worst feeling in the world. My kid broke her arm 2 months ago. Badly. Both bones in her forearm. Her forearm looked like this. \_/. The wait for the triage nurse seemed like an eternity. I had to get on them, 3 times, to hurry the F up. It still took 3 hours to get my kid to the dr and  get her some painkillers. Unreal.

One more thing: the doctor told me I have an extra-long colon.

I honestly don't know what to do with this information, but I'm confident GMTAN will. Happy Friday, everybody.

My daughter had a bad concussion  starting her freshman year of high school playing soccer (took a ball to the temple).  She had double vision and could not balance for about a week.  We went to urgent care to start, ER, referral, neurologist, and a children's neurologist.  All said the same thing......it takes time for the symptoms to subside.  My daughter ended up essentially being home schooled for her first semester of high school.  We went to the IEP program to get authorization and they sent a teacher to our house to do whatever work she could accomplish.  The home bound teacher gave grades etc.

Her vision improved over time but she now needs glasses (she did not before), she now gets car sick (never before), and gets headaches frequently (never did before).  The children's neurologist basically said she will just have these things to live with and will have to figure out how to mange the headaches and other items throughout her life.  There really isn't anything that can be done medically to get back to "normal".

On the bright side she did get back to playing softball after about 7 months and then soccer after that (although on the 1 yr anniversary of her concussion she had a collision playing soccer and tore her hip labrum....needless to say she gave up soccer after that).  She did go on to play softball each year for her high school and was able to manage.  She would have good and bad days with her headaches.  She is now in her first year of college and doing well.

All this to say is that a serious concussion takes time to heal and you cannot rush it.  There isn't really anything the doctors can do to speed things up provided there are no other issues (brain swelling, bleeding etc) that require immediate intervention.  Not two people will react or heal the same.  It sucks and is very frustrating but you just have to give the brain time to heal.

Now the guy at least my age, with a ponytail down to his ###, is covering "One" by Metallica. PSA: Metallica always a disastrous choice.
