Tomorrow night, going to see The Hold Steady playing all of "Stay Positive" in Jersey City.
Do you know if they're doing this at all the shows on this mini-tour or is it just the Jersey City show?  I'm going to the one in Asbury Park on Saturday, curious what to expect.

I love TTB but the 3 times I have seen them on the Wheels of Soul tour I have came away slightly disappointed.  There has been some strange circumstances but each time the sets have been short.  The first year there was lightening which delayed everything, the second year there was an incident at a neighboring venue that required the SWAT team to respond to and ended the TTB set.  Then last year it was a beautiful night, the music was great but I was walking to my car at 10:30.

Derrick tears it up, Susan has a great voice and can shred.  Couple that with an amazing, diverse group of musicians and they make up one hell of a band and crush the songs they play.  I just want to hear more than 75 minutes of their blissful sounds.
Can't go to the Barns/Sheds that have a curfew. Curfew is later at Red Rocks so on Wheels of Soul you get a longer night. Plus they start early there as well.

Also go and see them when they do the Night with Tedeschi Trucks in Spring or Fall tours - you get a two set show - no openers.

I usually see them 4-6 times a year - Red Rocks, New Orleans, Macon and Atlanta - plus sometimes the Sunshine Fest in Florida in January.

I highly suggest seeing them in Macon - it's a spiritual night. Small place and Derek turns it up - waaaaaay up. And they bring out Duane's Gold Top from the Big House - and honestly there might not be a better sounding singular guitar in the whole world - Old Black, Blackie Strat included. Something is wired just right in those pickups. Derek plays Whipping Post on that baby - and you know it's in good hands and the sound is incredible.

When they did 4 nights in Toronto last time it was different shows every night, I'd assume since they sold multi packs to these shows, it will be the same.

Broken Social Scene and Rural Alberta Advantage next Thursday at a beer festival.
Tomorrow night, and The Darcy's have been added as an opening act :excited: .

I looked into Arctic Monkeys tickets in Toronto for next week, thinking maybe they wouldn't be able to sell out a hockey arena on their latest album, and there would be cheap tickets on Stubhub or good ones available from the venue...    Only a handful at side stage on the main level and everything $100 (CAD) or more on Stubhub.

Foo fighters tonight in Ohio, thinking of going to it as it’s a 40 dollar Uber away and lawn tickets are 50. Beyoncé and jayz playing outside our boat tonight at the browns stadium.

At Boys & Girls 10th anniv in Brooklyn a few years ago, they did the whole album front to back on night 1 then mixed most of the songs in the other night.  The Jersey City show was the only one marked as a "Stay Positive" show when they went on sale.

Shows this weekend were stellar... Saturday was very good eclectic setlist ending with a Sly Stone Medley  https://archive.org/details/ttb2018-07-28

But Sunday was out of control awesomeness - a very very good In Memory - probably the best I've heard played by TTB. Markus King joining in on it.Plus the usual super TTB hits Bound for Glory and Midnight in Harlem.  A great Lovelight in memory of the Colonel . And a Ray Charles Night Time - a super Show Me- then Drive By Truckers joining them to finish off the Wheels of Soul tour with a Rockin in the Free World. https://archive.org/details/ttb2018-07-29

We saw Dave Alvin and Jimmie Dale Gilmore's show last Friday at the GAMH.  They played stuff off their new duo album as well as old material from each artist.  They made a great comedy team with Dave's SoCal slickster cowboy act playing off Jimmie Dale's aw shucks metaphysics.  I don't love the record but they put on a delightful show together.

Mrs. Eephus has connections with the X/Blasters wing of LA music so we got to hang backstage after the show.  This mostly consists of her hugging people and me awkwardly asking them where they're headed to next.

I wasn't too impressed with the new record: mainly because I just don't like Gilmore's voice. But wow, very cool! I've seen Alvin several times including recently with his brother in a small venue which was a great show. That's great you got to go backstage. I'm a big fan of Alvin and the early Blasters music.

Phil is pretty shy, especially since his health issues so his duo shows with Dave are relatively sedate affairs.  It's cool to hear their voices sing together but Phil doesn't do the stories and jokes that made this show so entertaining.

Took the GF to see Britney Spears at the Hard Rock casino in Ft Lauderdale the other night...she looked good but the lip synching was pretty bad. #shocker

Saw Dave and Phil a few years ago right at the Doheny Blues Festival right after Phil came back from his health issues. Frail but held up well. They were great. First time I saw Dave. Wow is he good. Total showman

Saw Live and Counting Crows last night. Live was really, really good, and great to see them back together and touring again. Counting crows was so f'n boring that we left halfway through.

The Hold Steady this weekend
This was phenomenal.  Japandroids were announced late as the opener, and they said it was the last show of their 150+ show tour.  Never seen them before so I don't know how it compares, but it felt like they left it all out there.  Guy had no voice left for "House That Heaven Built".

The Hold Steady were amazing.  I'd seen them a few other times the past few years without the piano player, and it makes such a difference having him back in the lineup.  The setlist was great, hard to imagine how it could've been much better.  It was the singer from Titus Andronicus's birthday so they brought him out on stage to sing with them twice during the show.  Crowd was great, lighting was great, sound was great haha.  I've never had a bad time at a THS show but for some reason this felt like I saw something special.

Headed to Darius Rucker and Lady Antebellum Thursday.

Kicking around the idea of seeing Hootie and Blowfish late next week.  I just don't know if they have enough songs I like to justify an entire concert, but hey certainly have 5 or 6 that I love and take me back to my youth.

Some August possibles -

  • Godspeed You! Black Emperor
  • Preservation Hall Jazz Band + Trombone Shorty
  • J Roddy Walston and the Business

Skipping this CC tour - just no longer a good concert experience (last tour was not great)

Japandroids might be a better live band than The Hold Steady.

Between the two of them, they have two of my top 5 shows ever.

Pixies/Weezer last night in Denver. Good show.
Saw this show last night in Salt Lake.

Pixies were great.  Ripped through 20+ songs without fanfare.  Sounded fantastic.  Played everything and more that I had wanted to hear.

Weezer, OTH, oof.  So over the top cheesy, terrible covers, silly staging and costume changes. I like, but don't love, Weezer and I'm not a big fan of much of their new work. That panned out last night.  The old stuff sounded fine.  The new was pretty dull.  I was very surprised at how many younger fans were there to see them.  I had no idea they were still so popular with the millennial crowd--or maybe that's just a Utah thing.

Was waiting to see what day everyone was going to be on ACL because I really want to see David Byrne and Paul McCartney but didn’t want to go to more than one day.

Turns out they are both on Friday. So I guess I’ll be going. Should be fun.

Dunno but it seemed exactly the same in Denver. Can't say for sure (I live in Nashville...just visiting CO this week). There were definitely more people here to see Weezer than Pixies, but I couldn't agree more about Weezer's cheesy staging and dumb stuff in the show that simply detracted from the music. Having said that, I wasn't super familiar with Weezer going in. Each member seemed to be a very good musician...just not my cup of tea.

Pearl Jam at Wrigley aug 18th and 20th

plus have whiskey Meyers and american Aquarium shows coming up

Wayne Kramer doing a 50th-anniversary MC5 tour as MC50 with Kim Thayil, Dug Pinnick, Brendan Canty, Marcus Durant. St. Augustine, September 6th. This is either going to be incredible or an absolute train wreck.

Kick out the jams, Mother####ers!

What? Brendan Canty and Thayil? Kick. Out. The Jams.  Where is this?

Saw Darius Rucker and Lady Antebellum Thursday.  Darius was great, great band, lots of energy, played 2 Hootie songs.  Lady Antebellum was good, not great.  The gal singer was not in great voice in my opinion but the dude singer and the band made up for it.  The encore brought Darius and his full band back on stage for a 3rd Hootie song that was the highlight of the show.

One thing the show did convince me was to go see Hootie in Charleston when I'm there on vacation on Saturday.  The crowd went nuts during those three Hootie songs.

Well, that sucks.  But if he wasn't right for it I'd rather see him do something he's right for.  With all his other side projects I was kinda surprised he was doing this.  Maybe they'll extend the King's X tour now!

Yep, and since he wasn't singing on this it's probably a better use of his time.  They are domestic right now, which means the "tour" is really a series of one-off weekend engagements, where they fly out, spend a day or two on the road (but more locally) then fly to their respective homes.  That said, dUg has said a few times recently that they are going to put out another album, so hopefully they're working on that! :excited:

That's great news. I haven't seen them in several years and I'm jonesing for a Kings X show. Used to see them all the time when we all still lived in Houston. Nothing else quite like it, IMO.

Band of Horses tonight.  Pretty pumped.

I just realized this festival is going on this weekend 30 miles from my home but I don't think I'll be able to swing it.
