RB Christian McCaffrey, SF (4 Viewers)

Link - David Newton, ESPN

Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey (shoulder) and CB Donte Jackson are practicing full and set to return Sunday. Nine players, including two on the practice squad, remain on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

For any of us McCaffrey owners who are somehow still alive (thanks Tyreek Hill), this is the moment.  Will he come in and be our FF playoff hero? Or is he going to be limited, or not play at all, and is this just going to be the continuation of a season of sadness?  I'm girding myself for disappointment, but am hoping that it becomes the stuff of FF legend - remember when McCaffrey was hurt all year but made it back right in time for the FF playoffs?
Small sample size (obviously) but CMC has actually been better per game than he was in 2019. Denver, Green Bay, Washington is a pretty nice schedule too. I'm not sure I'd rather own anyone else these last 3 weeks. Kinda like Barkley last year, in that if you made it despite him, he likely won it for you.

I somehow made it with drafting CMc, Godwin, Lamar, and Ingram and Dobbins within the first 6 rounds. I surely hope CMC is ready to go!
I made it starting my draft with CMC, Kelce, Chubb, Sutton, Mostert, Hilton. So, basically just Kelce for most of the season.

Not what you wanna hear, but could certainly be nothing. Being limited on a Wednesday, is usually still a good sign. If he is suddenly absent from practice Friday, then I'll be worried, but for now, no biggie.
Guys on the afternoon fantasy Sirius/XM radio show don’t think he’ll play another game this year. He injured the quad last week and tweaked it again today, so I seriously doubt they jeopardize their franchise player and put him out there at less than 100% in a meaningless game.

Christian McCaffrey (shoulder, quad) was sidelined for Thursday's practice.

Sigh. He was at least absent for the portion open to media. It's a worrisome downgrade from Wednesday's limited session since he did tweak his quad mid-practice. If McCaffrey is again unable to participate on Friday, fantasy players should expect to fire up Mike Davis for another (unexpected) start against Denver.

Its strange how snake bitten he's been.

Like, if he hurt his ankle again against KC, and then hurt his ankle again this week, I'd say ok, its time to shut him down. But 3 completely unrelated injuries, is just so fluky.

I'm holding out hope he can practice Friday, and still plays this week, but its looking 50-50 at best right now.

If it was an important game, I could see the optimism, but at this point, there is a small dimmer of hope. With nothing on the line, why put him out there at less than 100%. It makes zero sense. I'm making other plans.

Its an important game in my opinion. They are 2 games out of the playoffs with 4 to go, stranger things have happened, and its possible they can go 3-1 in that stretch. Also, finishing strong is a huge deal, especially for a 1st year coach.

They also need to determine if Teddy is the guy going forward as well, and its a lot easier to tell that with more than 3 games with CMC.

They have plenty of reasons to play CMC at less than 100%, its not like he's in any danger of missing time next season because of some nagging injury. Shutting him down to save wear and tear makes no sense in my opinion. The only reason to hold him out, is if he physically can't go.

He’s prob done for the year. They won’t jeopardize their franchise player.!

Wouldn't they just throw him on IR then?  Or come out and say they were holding him out for the remaining weeks to preserve him for next season?  It isn't like you are risking attendance and mutiny, people can't go to the games anyway...

As a McCaffery owner that has somehow pieced together a #1 seed with the help of Mike Davis and a platoon of other RB's - I hope he plays.

I don't entirely understand the "shut him down" sentiments you hear regarding players. If they can play and be effective, and have no higher than normal risk of re-injury, they should play and generally do. My assumption here is they think (or hope) McCaffrey can meet those criteria before the end of the year.

Agreed. There is a big difference between CMC, and somebody like Julio Jones, where shutting him down might make sense, as its the same injury over and over again.

...and the window for an elite RB to be elite is a lot shorter. If you have a Julio who could give you 10 years at that level, overly cautious is an easier sell.

When he sprained his ankle in week 2 and he was talking about making it back in about 1 month, I thought we had dodged a bullet.  But he has played in 1 game out of the 12 weeks since then :(

Still listed as doubtful with Coach pretty much ruling him out this week. I'm sure CMC is advocating for playing against his dad's old team. I was playing fantasy football with #87 in my lineup not too many years ago. If healthy, play him. The heck with all this shut him down talk! Play ball

Per Rapoport on Twitter:

While no one is assuming anything with Christian McCaffrey, the hope is that the #Panthers RB will practice tomorrow with a chance to play Saturday vs. the #Packers, source said. WR DJ Moore should also come off the COVID-19 reserve list in time for Saturday, as well.
As much as I don't want to see him shred my Packers to pieces, I need him desperately in my fantasy semi-finals.  Priorities, priorities...

Mike Davis has saved our season.  He's only started 10 games but is sitting at RB #7 for the year (PPR).
Yeah, it's to the point I almost would rather CMC be shut down and play Mike Davis with the hopes of and 80 total 2 td game. Worst case scenario is CMC comes back for this Saturday and then [redacted].

Panthers head coach Matt Rhule said he planned on Christian McCaffrey (thigh) playing again in 2020.

Rhule said McCaffrey was coming to the team's facility Monday for treatment on his injured thigh. A Week 16 return would be the best case scenario for McCaffrey, though it's uncertain he would take on his usual massive workload upon returning. There's also a chance the Panthers come to their senses and shelve their superstar running back for the rest of the season. Mike Davis will continue functioning as an RB2 in Week 15 against the Packers, assuming CMC remains out. Carolina plays Washington in Week 16 and the Saints in Week 17.

Maybe I'm foolishly optimistic, but I think CMC plays this week. McCaffrey's insanely completive, and Rhule seems to be going the Flores' route. Establish culture, finish strong.

Nothing would be better for that than upsetting the Packers. Sort of like miami beating the Patriots last season

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2020/12/15/matt-rhule-wont-turn-final-three-games-into-a-tryout-for-next-year/

“I’m going to go try to win the last three games, so I’m going to put the guys that earned the right to start or play in,” Rhule said, via Darin Gantt of the team’s website. “I just don’t think it’s a great message to the team to start making this a tryout. The question earlier about how to keep guys’ eyes from glossing over, if we learn one thing this year with a young team, if we learn how to finish a season with 28 days of focus in December, if we have a chance to be a playoff team next year, our ability to focus around Christmas, to focus around Thanksgiving, to go win games at the end of the year when you’re beat up, when practices are shorter, that’s a skill.”

There will be questions for Rhule and the Panthers to answer about the future at several spots, including quarterback, but it’s clear that the coach wants the focus to be on the present until there are no games left on the schedule.

I have both, so I either want CMC full-go or not at all.
I think you'll get your wish there. If CMC is back, it won't be as an accessory, it'll be as the centerpiece. If he plays, I'd expect 25 touches, unless he gets banged up again.

If the plan were to baby him, why bring him back at all?

He'll definitely play this week. You know why? The FF Gods are cruel.

I had him penciled in last week for 16+ points.  He doesn't play and my opponent has Davis who gets 21 points against me.

That means CMC is going off this week when I'm out.

Good luck to all of you that can use him!

Rhule already said that he doesn't expect CMC to play this week.

I get they are professional players etc etc but really......if he doesn’t play this week, is there any reason to bring him back for a game or two?

Rotoworld:

The Panthers expect Christian McCaffrey (thigh) to miss Saturday's game against the Packers.

McCaffrey was actually estimated as "limited" for Tuesday's walk-through, but coach Matt Rhule confirmed the three-down monster is expected to miss yet another game, his 11th. If you have made it this far without your first-round pick, it is probably worth keeping him around for the off chance he is deployed in Week 16, but being shut down is equally likely at this point. Mike Davis will continue to muddle along the RB1/2 borderline in McCaffrey's absence.

So basically he is amounting to what I thought he would be out of college, small white guy/3rd down specialist- lacking toughness

Not trying to go all Pollyanna, but when I listen to the interview, it more sounds like Rhule is just saying McCaffrey will test it out this week and we’ll see how that goes. Doesn’t want to inflate expectations.

I’d say CMC is more likely to be ruled out this week, but him playing isn’t out of the question.

did you bromigos know that christian macaffrey went to valor christian high school just think how confusing that must have been it is a wonder that he ever made it to the big time because everyone would be confused and say hey you cant draft a high school thats just crazy so bam another riddle solved by the old swcer take that to the bank brohans
